My pet fire ant colony (Solenopsis geminata), named the Crimson Knights, has reached their growth spurt stage, exploding in population, and so I have been working on the ultimate fire ant setup: a volcanic island pauldarium, complete with mountain, greenery, waterfall, and surrounding waters. Transporting the colony was a surprising process, but he best part was watching how the fire ants poured out of the volcano like lava at feeding time! Hope you enjoy this week's explosive fire ant video! Ant love forever! This video was shot in 4K Ultra HD resolution.

I would suggest adding water boatmen, these little insects with two legs that swim and sometimes get in pools, not to confuse with backswimmers. They aren’t carnivorous, they actually eat algae. The backswimmers however, eat insects so don’t confuse them- would be a shame 😅. So yeah, I would suggest adding water boatmen to the waters. Ant love forever 🐜❤️
@user-lw4vi4oy2d
@user-lw4vi4oy2d 10 ай бұрын
Hey as a waterboatman keeper myself i wouldn't recommend them honestly. Their food requirements are just way too specific that not everyone could provide, like you said, they only feed on algae and wouldn't eat pretty much anything else. I've tried spirulina wafer, blanched and raw vegetables as well as more experimental stuff like sea kept and bubblegrass, the only other thing they've ever fed on were the live plants in their tank however that isn't a reliable food source and they only rarely do it. Also they're omnivore/opportunistic carnivore so they will also eat small weak dying fish and bloodworm occasionally

My suggestion for the water beasts are fire/flame guppies, as well as red claw crabs or panther crabs if you can find them. I think the pops of red in the water would compliment the setup as well as their fellow volcano dwelling neighbors. Apistogramma Dwarf Cichlid also have gorgeous reds and oranges. 🐠🧡

I worry that the crabs will get eaten. Both species of crabs you mentioned are able to less or more come out on the surface. Panther crabs are fully aquatic crabs, althrough sometimes they might leave the water in search for food. And red claws are known of living in both surface and aquatic area.

I strongly recommend neon tetras (of any colour) for your aquarium habitat. The colours and size of the fish means you can keep many in the area you are looking to fill. Make sure to add some type of shrimp or pleco so it keeps the surfaces free of algae and acts as a cleanup crew for excess food. You can get all of these fish at big als or various aquarium stores in Toronto. I hope this helps a lot! So happy to see the new setup btw!! Looks amazing!!

Now THIS is an ant farm! The setups you've been creating lately have been truly inspirational, it's awesome to see so much hard work and dedication for animals so many view as pests! In terms of the water section, a good sized school of ember tetras could look awesome, and they'd fit the theme quite well! If not, some blind cave tetras could match the cavey-volcanic sort of theme as well. Honey gourami also have a gorgeous yellow-orange colouration to them would compliment the ants quite well! These could also be combined with any sort of corydoras catfish, cherry shrimp (the orange verity could look cool) or even dwarf crayfish!

I’d suggest shrimp for the waterways. They are an excellent clean up crew and will help keep the waters clean. Plus some species of freshwater shrimp are a fiery red and would really pop in the black waters. The only problem with this is that shrimp love aquatic plants as it makes them feel safe and give them something to graze and hide in. And I’m afraid by adding plants that would take away from the overall feel of the setup. But hey perhaps it won’t.

I agreed til the part about Piranhas. They bore most people & they get enormous! Like they literally won't fit as adults (and keeping fish in a small tank does _not_ limit their growth). And piranhas are illegal in many places. If you personally like the look & don't mind the size, just go for pacu, their virtually identical but less problematic vegetarian lookalikes (from the same regions iirc). But not in a setup like this, meant for little fish.

This is gorgeous! 1. The ants may still make a bridge to cross the barriers you set and escape. Fire ants are ridiculous, as you know. 2. Any fish you put in the water may be eaten by the ants as well. So I suggest something small that repopulates steadily (you can always remove them yourself to feed to the ants too) such as mosquito fish. They'll eat straggler ants, but the ants will also eat them and it's insane to watch. Can't wait to see the next update on this habitat!

The video footage itself, it greatly shot and i do like the test tube footage, but to be honest that alone wouldn’t keep me engaged. What draws me to your videos is first off all the music that you add to it. It’s SO perfect, the timing off it and a lot off very recognisable sounds so it hits that nostalgia and gives it that epic feel to it. And then to complete it all, your voice overs. You have a very nice, clear and soothing voice. And your way off explaining things and how you smartly keep people wanting to see more with these storylines. That mixed with your general and incredible passion and enthousiasme keeps me hooked every second off the videos!❤

In my entire life as owner of a saltwater reef tank only store, never having ever once had a freshwater tank or even entertaining the idea (I'm a coral farmer) I've never seen a sump that full of water unless doing maintenance. He needs to bring it down where the water level from evaporation loss only occurs in the final chamber with the pump. I think he's going to find out on his own somehow the next time power goes out. I'd say 1/10 job. Kids who came into my store with no knowledge except google info did better and no offense but am trying to help and be serious. Personally at home I use rubbermaid 75g or 150g horse troughs and pump from my basement up to 220g 20yr old reef display tank where my biggest problem is pruning the corals to sell and trade as they get bigger while preparing to buy a 350g. The 220 has been maxed out bad for at least 8yrs. I have _no_ noise, my water volume is significantly increased by LARGE sumps in basement (some use closets or extra bedrooms) and my skimmer, heaters, everything else goes in there too. All out of sight so we just enjoy the display tank itself. The *ONLY* point of the baffles (or different sections) of a sump is to trap microbubbles. That's *IT*. IN FRESHWATER YOU DO NOT GET MICROBUBBLES SO IT'S NOT NEEDED. I used to make sumps for smaller tanks under 180g (most tend to have 75g to 150's) buying pallets of 40g petco breeder tanks (until they stopped selling them for $40 each 3-4yrs ago?) and then sell them for $250-300 each. The acrylic baffles and aquarium grade silicone came free from friend at local acrylic shop so all it cost out of my pocket was $40. To get brand name sumps, they cost $250-500 up so my $200-$300+ (depending on how many baffles/microbubble chamber traps the customer wanted - that's why the water flows down under the 1" gaps, it's giving small bubbles that can kill saltwater fish and corals a chance to work out by floating to the top against the current) I had a waiting list of people in line for when they'd be completed and continued to sell them until probably the 30th time emptying entire petco stores of pallets of 40g breeder tanks when one day they said "no more buddy sorry." Now that they're $60-80 I could still make killer profit but now, people have learned to make their own out of rubbermaid totes just as I do at my own home. Save some MAJOR money. Guy I know only uses those totes at walmart for storing paperwork or clothes in, 20-30g rubbermaids. Sometimes you might have to build a small pvc frame - or inside the stand it can do it too - to make the sides not bow out under full pressure (like when doing maintenance) but otherwise, if good for food, it's the same thing but just has no baffles. If microbubbles aren't a problem or if for freshwater, you could have used a $5-10 tote, drilled a few holes with bulkheads and call it a done day. Honestly, don't take my word for it. Watch videos about "Sumps in reef tanks" and also "stand pipes". These two things if researched, could save mikeys new mansion with automatic blinds a person could do in seconds by hand lol (it took longer for him to record it than do it hahaha classic, that's from a simpsons episode I think) from flooding brown water all over the place.

@@jimfriedman6923 No no. He would epically fail. Doesn't know anything at all and I've watched these episodes for about 3yrs now. Nothing so do not encourage him. Might not even be legal where he lives to have saltwater reef tanks. It can take a LOT of money depending what's going on to create full blown reef tanks but it's not like he's lacking in that dept. Guy owns his own castle in a place with nobody or noone (I would presume americas trashy govt and it's trashy people like myself lol) can't tell him what to do. I can respect that, truly to each their own. He does freshwater or has in the past but with saltwater or corals? Since he doesn't research anything before doing it (such as keeping that sump water under an inch from the top when it should be 1" below the last, final baffle with the pump inside - have never seen a sump done _so_ wrong in my life, he truly didn't look up how they work period, just winging it you can tell) which would be insanely irresponsible. If working right, the ONLY place water evaporation should occur is in the final chamber with pump. Have never seen anybody set a sump up without researching the correct water level first is all. Incredible. Sorry so long but I hope he reads this. I don't want him to fail since he doesn't know how they work. If it's reef or saltwater, if you lose a cup or a gallon a day to evaporation, you must put that same cup or gallon of RODI purified water in that day or next morning. Letting it go up and down, they don't like swings. That's why only the end chamber is the one where it should evaporate. So you see, please don't encourage him. He might even put saltwater back in for evaporation loss. In real life, you have no idea how many "educated" people like nurses, doctors, tax people, scientists, biologists (of other sciences not marine lol) or regular hobbyists with little money actually do that with their first marine tank if they're not paying somebody like me to do it for them or haven't researched it or been directly told. But it was often: "Everything is dying and I'm doing just what you said! Even using your own 0tds rodi water I saw was zero, things are still going downhill and *fast..* ". Me while testing water, salt the easiest and always first: "You're not putting saltwater in for evaporation loss now are you? Your salinity is sky high" Customer: "What do you mean. It's a saltwater tank, why wouldn't I put saltwater back in?" me: groans in soul for over 100 people doing this and tells 5yr old The More You Know! story of asking what happens with a glass of salt water on a deck in summer: "Does the whole thing evaporate? OR.. does only the WATER evaporate leaving all the salt behind? See what you've been doing? You're killing your own corals, here take this purified freshwater and slowly dilute it each day, don't do it all at once and don't put anymore saltwater in there. I'm surprised anything's alive." There's so many little simple yet crucial things like that you'd never believe get overlooked if NOT RESEARCHED or advised by somebody and just winged instead. Like having sump levels 1-2" from the top. He's asking for it to flood. Most sumps of acrylic design aren't even made to be filled to the top at all and brand new can break or crack without support straps around the top. It's why they're called sumps and not tanks. You don't fill the whole thing up. Think with first sump I built when 13 even then I knew better to not fill to the top even though made of glass. If power goes out, the backflow of water from reservoir/tank above in his ant display will definitely flood the place. That's another function of a sump. To keep the backflow from overflowing onto floor in a container large enough to hold it. With sump water level 2" from the top it's going to be bad. I'm so sorry this is so long but truly in my whole life, I've never seen anything like that.

Wow! This is one of the greatest builds you've ever done, and considering how awesome your builds have been in the past, that's saying something! It looks amazing, and very realistic. You clearly have a coral reef "nearby" because of the white sand. White sand is basically parrot fish poop! 😆They have "beaks" and eat the coral, digesting the little plants inside the corals and the animal part of the structure. Then they poop out the remainder. (I think some other fish do much the same but I can only remember them.) The volcano build is phenomenal. As a geology enthusiast, though I am definitely not a professional or expert in any way, it looks pretty realistic to me. You're right about plants only growing to a certain level then just stop. I can't remember the exact height (it probably changes a bit due to climate), but there definitely is a level at which they cannot grow any higher. It's touches like this which make the difference between good and awesome!

Watching this through the second time. Volcania you often use the term "it filled my heart with joy" well I am sitting here with joy in my heart you used Sphagnum moss for the sense of scale, and you called it a diorama. As a life long scale model builder including subjects that require scale scenery just to hear that from Ants Canada filled my heart with JOY! It is a BEAUTIFUL formicarium! The filtration system is really first class setup. By the time the waterfall came on line I was saying "Yes!" out loud. You have done great things with ants and other critter's homes but really this has got to be the best yet. This reminded me of Jules Verne book/movie Mysterious Island and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Sense of scale, atmosphere, tells a story. And has amazing living inhabitants with interesting lives. MAKER OF WORLDS. STANDING OVATION! My choice for the coolest one yet.

I feel shrimp or mini crawfish would be the best option for the water feature. Many aquatic amphibians will need land which exposes them to the ants, and even some such as axolotls require cool water which might not be feasible given the temperature of the ant room/setup. Fish would certainly be a possibility, but for the sake of keeping the water truly crystal clean, a minimal water beast may be best here.
