Back in the 60s and 70s I was good friends with the Van Doren family and still keep in touch with some of them. The shoe company was started with the idea that you could go into a Vans store anywhere in LA and Orange Counties region of SoCal and be appropriately fitted for a style you were interested in. If they didn't have it they would make it overnight and deliver it back to the store nearest you and you could pick it up at no extra charge. On some occasions I would help delivery shoes in the middle of the night for orders placed earlier in the day. The shoes at that time were considered budget custom shoes......hence why Spicoli was wearing the checkerboard pattern.

The failure in the heel happens LOONNGG after the olie pad and toe area wears out when actually using these as skate shoes. This happens to all skate shoes and it just means time for a new pair, it wouldn't make sense to design a skate shoe that long outlives its olie pad.

@SaraAB874 жыл бұрын
I like these shoes, some of the best ever made. I haven't had a heel issue yet but then again I don't skate. These are wider than Converse and seem to have more cushioning inside. The Vans Sk8 Hi are actually really wide for standard shoes. These also have arch support which converse do not from what I can see at least for standard chucks. Some people who have more narrow feet might like the standard converse better. These have less seams around the toe area though I still have to use the duct tape to cover those but its a less serious problem than with converse. The material used on the back of the heel feels fantastic.

As an employee at vans and seeing some of the comments, in the video the side stripe on vans is called the jazz stripe. almost all vans are made across the world and the vault vans are more of the collectable vans and the pros have better quality material such as the leather/suede. The pros will have a thicker/denser rubber compared to the classics. The pros will also have the ultracush technology making them more comfortable to wear than a pair of classics. The insole of the pros have an arch in it so it doesn't feel like you’re wearing a flat shoe. The vault vans are only sold at three stores in the US and all of them are in New york.

I’ve been wearing vans for 20+ years as well and while mine has a failure point it is a different failure point. Look at the where of the heel of your shoe versus the rest, looking at those vans it looks like you are a pretty heavy heel strike or when you walk which could be causing that blowout. Or at least making that your specific failure point. Vans are a great test for exposing how you walk and wear out shoes. You might want to look out for extra heel support where you can find it

I don’t think that the Vans brand actually owns a lot of factories around the globe, but they have just outsourced production, like most US/European brands. This has many positive aspects for the brand: They can always choose the lowest bidder for an order, has no money bound in machinery, and has no responsibilty to follow environmental laws, fair pay to the workforce etc. They can always wash their hands and say “But hey, we just ordered a 40’ container of shoes, how they were made wasn’t our fault”. Ok, they wouldn’t say it this way, but in a more correct language. H&M, Puma etc. all got their garments made in the factory that collapsed in Bangladesh, but only the local owner was to blame. And according to the law, that is correct. But given the economic powers in big brands i find it problematic to look at the subject this way...

I love your subtle beating around the bush about wearing JNCOS as a kid 😂. Be proud we’ve all been there although some went much deeper down that hall of ridiculous than others. If you got to level kangaroo or elephant that was the final stage. You were wearing them in spite of everyone like a mullet in present day.

I’ve only ever had 2 pairs of vans, I’ve had the Baker x Vans and the supreme x Vans and they’re probably the best skating shoes I’ve had

I love Vans Sk8 Hi shoes. The first time I got a pair was bacc in the 80's, about 40 years ago. The last time I had some, I had a beautiful forest green pair back 2019, that's rubber sole went out on me like 2 months after I got the pair. I was so angry that I haven't had a pair since. Beautiful uppers, rotten soles.

Brilliant exactly what I asked for in the last cut in half comments. Love to see more if you get the chance like old school airwalks/vision/converse as well as new school skate shoes like etnies, Emerica, es, Osiris, dvs etc to see the difference in construction/quality.
