In FTL you experience the atmosphere of running a spaceship trying to save the galaxy. It's a dangerous mission, with every encounter presenting a unique challenge with multiple solutions. What will you do if a heavy missile barrage shuts down your shields? Reroute all power to the engines in an attempt to escape, power up additional weapons to blow your enemy out of the sky, or take the fight to them with a boarding party? This "spaceship simulation roguelike-like" allows you to take your ship and crew on an adventure through a randomly generated galaxy filled with glory and bitter defeat.

Also, crew kills (killing all the crew without destroying an enemy ship) actually gives you more loot. You have a chance of finding crew members, higher chance of finding more fuel, slightly more scrap, etc.

Yea but if you do it at the boss battle then that ship activates some ai stuff and it makes the fight twice as hard or something like that

​@@masterofblue4323it doesnt fight better afaik, but it does get treated as a drone ship, meaning it gets auto repair. Its a very valid strategy to keep a single crew akive to prevent its auto repair from starting

I LOVE THIS. It feels like I’m back in 2017, this style of commentary is why I subscribed in the first place, laidback but also sometimes really frantic yet focused. Speaking of 2017, maybe give Crashlands a go again? No need to finish it of course due to the massive length of the game, but that play through was really good.

Finally, the crew teleporter is absolutely invaluable for the flagship fight. Because their weapon systems are all disconnected from the rest of their ship, any two crew members can board a weapon room, kill the rebel manning it and disable the weapon.

One suggestion: upgrading piloting isn't as good as you think--level 2 gives half your normal evasion when *not* manned. So it's really only useful if you have extremely limited crew or your pilot gets mine controlled or something. What you really want to do is upgrade engines to 5 for a 45% dodge chance (with skilled pilot and engineer); after that it drops off to less than 5 dodge per power so it's not really worth it.

The first mantis ship you fought (captain KazaaakplethKilik) is actually the start of the legendary thief event. If you had certain systems you could potentially unlock the mantis ship through this event (alternatively win with zoltan cruiser)

It's interesting how differently people play this game. For ship invasions, I would bump up the door strength, then vent the ship of oxygen apart from the medbay. This would lead surviving attackers there, so you can fight them while being healed. Venting the air by opening air locks is also an efficient way of fighting fire. You can also power down the oxygen subsystem to make it happen even quicker. Bumping shields up early also means your shield guy gets experience faster. For this reason you can cheese the experience by letting the attacking laser drones continually hit your ship. Put as much energy as you can into engines to increase your chance of dodging lasers, missiles, and asteroids.

Also, the medbay doesn't need to be powered all the time, so you can save some energy there. When you get damaged or are invaded, take all people from non essential systems like doors and sensors and send them there. Also, there are hot keys to save your crew positions. This makes it easier to return everyone to their stations.

hey, if you like FTL, then I heavily recommend a mod for it: FTL: Multiverse, if you don't know about it already, it's a massive overhaul mod for the game which adds tons of new features, ranging from events, to weapons, to new cruisers, to even new endings, and I'm not overexaggerating, but the amount of content in this mod is giant (The mod itself is 500 megabytes, no joke).

this video took me back a few good years, loved this game right from the moment I first picked it up simple visual design with the sprites, way deeper micromanagement then visible at first glance, nice varieties in ships and loadouts, interesting challenges leading to more choices for your start and much more I'm not really into space combat and Sci-Fi in general, but this game still hooked me way too much fighting the final boss for the first time, feeling joy immediately followed by dread when destroying it, only to find out about additional phases you weren't prepared for and the levels of joy and relieve upon properly winning for the first time, those are heavy hitters also can't remember the last time I had a games easy mode kick my butt as hard as this one does when you are still learning how it works xD

Crew kills actually get you more scrap, try for those as much as possible. Also, putting money into shields early game is much better than buying a pike beam because “you like it”, you need hull more than another weapon.
