my first typography class assignment in art school was to design 80 fliers, in indesign which I’d never used before, due next day. There were many restrictions so it wasn’t too hard, but 2 weeks later they were much milder and we had to do 40 due next day. Personally now I think that an hour is a really bad time for 2, 3, or even maybe 4 posters. Short enough time to not be able to make anything that isn’t typography, long enough time to have time to waste adjusting point sizes and moving objects around 75 times. Also short enough to not have time to bother with microtypography. You’ve spent your time designing a thing and then moving over to the next thing.. I think it’d be interesting to see how that compares to an approach where you only give yourself 10 minutes per poster, but the first 30 minutes you spend defining rules and guides for your posters that they will all follow, e.g. making something like a swiss grid or a wild radial grid, selecting a palette, restricting yourself to 3 point size options / x typefaces, etc. It’s nice to move things around and see what happens but I find when working at speed it honestly helps just to place some elements on pre-defined rules and go ‘ok. This sits here now. Done.’
