Never apologise for getting stuck in to a hard job, working your butt off and sweating. As a designer I think it is paramount that you have a true understanding of what it takes to transform something from start to finish. Experience on the ground is invaluable and will inform all that you do in the future. Great job! Nothing like actually being an active participant in the transformation of these spaces. You will forever be truly connected to this home you are building literally from the ground up. Hi from New Zealand again.

The good thing about ripping out the dry wall in the kitchen is that it's a good opportunity to get the electricians in to install the wiring for more power points or new oven connection if you need it especially if the new layout is different so the power sockets for the fridge, microwave, range hood etc will be in a different location.

I have a giant pad of newsprint paper. I take a marker and write step by step lists, in large print, of what needs to happen in the order it needs to happen for every area I'm renovating. Then I hang it somewhere nearby where I'm working and follow it step by step. I have these all over the house. I can take a breath, figure out what this area needs, write it down and then check things off one by one. That's the fun part!

Drew, please wear a respirator in case you have lead. I enlarged some windows in an old 100-year-old farmhouse and ended up with elevated lead levels! Just an FYI. I rehabed houses for resale and loved watching the changes as I torn things out and replaced them. It is so satisfying.
@jamiegibson25952 жыл бұрын
You are right. Either one is a problem. If asbestos is found that is a game changer for a demo. Simply using a saw to enlarge the windows caused the lead from old paint to sift through the air. Luckily the insulation in my old farmhouse was not asbestos. Another place asbestos is often found is around water pipes and heat runs. My father-in-law was a steam fitter and dies of asbestosis.

Hi, I was bien and raised in South America and I am familiar with the Colonial Spanish style. The dark wood ceilings, terracota floors, black antique lamps and ornaments /attachments, at the end they create a dark atmosphere. So, my recommendation is to watch for the dark tones you are selecting because at the end you can end up having dark living areas. Then people end up painting in white such black ceiling lamps... and every thing else ... 🤷🏻♀️😂Again, congrats on your new home!! 🎈

Cover your appliances! With any plastic! All that dust. And I don't know how houses are in California but the vents are super important when there's central heating and AC, so cover the vents too when demoing anything. Dust gets everywhere! You can also just cover with a plastic sheet the doorways to contain the dust to that one single room.

Great to see you putting the hard work in Drew! Your excitement for this renovation is apparent. My thoughts on your design: I’d paint the butlers pantry dark as well as then it will be less obvious from the dining room. Also have you looked at quartz or engineered stone countertops? Marble is expensive and easily stained plus needs a lot of maintenance. Quartz or engineered stone is more durable and low maintenance. I do love the design direction you’re taking with the dark wood and Spanish influence. Oh and don’t forget your lighting and electrical outlet planning before sheet rocking and tiling.

Hi Drew! 👋Here are my lessons learned while renovating a condo. 1. For the cabinets, tape the doors shut and leave them attached to the cabinets 2. There are usually long screws that attach the cabinets to the wall and sometimes they are attached to each other. If they don't detach there's often a hidden screw somewhere (you might need two people to lift them down so that they don't come crashing down on you...) 3. If you remove them carefully, you can donate them to the Restore, post them on craigslist etc. They looked to be high quality cabinets in good condition so I hope you didn't just throw them away. :`( 5. Invest in protective gear. Wear goggles, a mask or respirator, protect your ears, gloves and knee pads if needed. I love the 3M soundproof headphones that you can blue tooth music into. You seriously won't hear a thing except your music! It makes demo more enjoyable while protecting your ears and not disturbing your neighbors. The only downside is if you are working with someone and need to converse you won't be able to hear them! 😂 6. Buy some reusable, good quality drop clothes to cover things during demo and move stuff out of the way. That way you'll protect stuff you want to re-use. 7. Old homes can have lead paint, asbestos, lead pipes etc. Educate yourself on how to keep yourself and loved ones safe from these toxic materials. 8. There are TONS of videos online on how to do all of these things! Watch them first before diving in head first. 9. If you absolutely love it, go with the expensive tile. ☺It's ok to splurge now and then. Go slow and save for your next project. Make wise and thoughtful decisions. 10. You will learn a ton just by doing! Good luck and look forward to the transformation of your beautiful, historical property! 🏡❤

Just need to be sure that if an arch is added the appliances can still fit through.

Drew, when you said you’d never demoed tile before, all I could think was, he’s in for a surprise with all the holes he’ll make. Good plan to hire a professional to get you started and give you an assist. I agree with everyone else, it was lots of fun to watch your face as everything dropped on you. I’m so excited to see this continue.

Sweating while doing hard work just shows how hard you are actually working!! I have my dad's sweat glands. Some girls glisten....I rain!! It's just the way it is! It will look fabulous when you get it done, so keep at it! I love that you are sharing this process with your followers! It's so fun to watch how you plan things out from start to finish! Thank you!

Love that you are getting into the demo side of this and have more respect for you getting sweaty and dirty. Why would anyone judge or hold against you honest hard work? I feel like this process will give you a whole new view and respect as a designer for the craftspeople that have to make your visions a reality.

You're working really hard, you are going to sweat and you're so adorable, nothing can take away from that. Thanks for sharing the plans of the kitchen and taking us along with you and sharing your home's journey.

FYI- My friend did terracotta tiles in her kitchen and they do chip easily when she drops things on the floor.

hahaha I feel so validated! I've been designing my dream kitchen for over a year, and I've had a herringbone brick on the floor from the beginning and everyone's been all "brick floors in a kitchen?? just do an accent wall" but I've stood firm. Excited to see how yours will turn out!

I love that you brought in an expert to teach you how to remove the tile AND that you shared what you learned from him! Thanks!

So much learning comes from doing it yourself. I’m a year into renovating our 1914 brick home and have learned everything from KZbin (we had pros for the serious structural things). Such a good call on getting the counters installed before deciding on tile. Like someone mentioned, a legit respirator is so worth it for demo. You’ll get sweaty, but it makes a big difference. If your planning to do a lot more demo yourself, I would say ear protection that goes over your ears really helps.

OMG I’m was so freaked out that you didn’t cover/move the appliances 🥹 Love your demo though, was thinking it would be a great way of relieving some stress to destroy the walls 😂 Can wait to see what’s next.

We love Roberto! Very much enjoy you making fun of yourself with this process. It’s a true labour of love. When we moved in we had to tear up the tile floors in the living room and they were stuck to a metal mesh on the floor. That was quite the task

Thank you for keeping this realistic. So many people take on a project that takes longer than expected due to inexperience, not having the right tools, and unrealistic expectations that some home improvement shows help perpetuate. Unfortunately, in an effort to save money, some DIY projects end up costing more money than it would have to have a professional complete the job, due to damage or not knowing the building codes. At least you know when to ask for help or guidance to prevent further problems. Good luck! The final reveal will be worth it.

Wow! What a project and what an improvement in the kitchen! Good job, Drew. I absolutely LOVE that floor lamp you got at the antique store. Can't wait to see it placed in your beautifully fully remodeled furnished home. I think bouncing back and forth with your projects in the house will keep it more interesting for you and your viewers. It's a huge house. And there is still the beautiful courtyard!!!!

Watching this step by step is so helpful. I just bought a 1950s ranch that hasn't been updated since maybe the 80s. So excited, so scared, but can't wait to get started.
