Building the range hood was a bit daunting when I first started to think about the design and build. I ended creating a simple frame to start and adding some shape to the sides to create a silhouette that was both soft and structural!

I HAVE CONCERNS. 😂 1) the vented hood came out spectacular! 2) what if the vent hood needs service. Such as motor problems or electrical issues? How will you go about accessing that portion of the vent hood without ripping it all out first? 2) with the vent hood so high above the range and the shelf above it, will smoke, steam etc., still be able to be directed into the vent hood?

I personally would have brought the hood further down to where the marbel shelf is now, and only add shelf slates on each side of the hood. Usually, it's mentioned in the instructions manual the optimal distance between the stove and the hood (to me, it seems a bit too high up) Also, even though it would have kind of ruined the aesthetic, I would have opted for the front panel to be a door, so that I can access if necessary. But other than that, visually, it looks stunning. You always have great ideas!

Marble is not combustible, so I’m not mad at the shelf. For some reason I thought the rail was for spatulas and ladles. The pots may get some splash back. Performance is not too much of a concern. We don’t know the range Drew selected. So it’s impossible to make recommendations without doing a BTU conversion to CFM’s and look at the clearance. People are too quick to judge in the comment section.

yeah I don't think if it will be effective if it's so high up. We have shelves either side aswell but in the middle the hood or else it would be to far away to do anything.

I think the hood looks great. I am worried about the height and effectiveness of the hood also. I wonder if the fan vibration would crack the plaster or the cooking fumes and grease will stick to it and make it hard to clean. You might find a custom vent hood made of stainless steel in the future. One more thing…I don’t know what the code is in CA but where I live there are height and material codes because of fire. I do hope it works for you as I think your ideas are beautiful. I just want everything to work out.

Drew I have to be honest with you - I don't like it. It looks too bulky and it's distracting. It's also going to be hard to replace. BUT, at first I wasn't sure about the color of the cabinets either and now I love it. The rod looks absolutely amazing, but everything will get dirty when cooking. If I were you I would've put the rod on the other side of the kitchen where it won't be so cramped. Good luck with the rest of the renovation!

Haha, ventilation removes the HOGS -- heat, odors, grease, smoke. You should be running your ventilation every time you cook or all of that gunk will end up covering your cabinets and making them sticky/gross. I love, love, love your design aesthetic, content, personality, videos, and creativity. Thank you for all of that. There are a few people who have mentioned the size and the height of the range hood. For the most part, they are correct. Also, you should add up the BTU's of all of the heating sources (burners, oven, etc.), and then make sure your CFM from the vent are adequate to cover all of them. Typically, your ventilation will be one size larger than your range (ie: if you have a 30" range, you'll want a 36" vent hood. There are several reasons why your vent hood might be a fire hazard as well. Someone has mentioned those reasons below me, but now, I can't find it. Signed, a kitchen designer and appliance expert.

As beautiful as it looks, I am concerned about two things in this design: 1. How would you access the hood in case of a need of repair? 2. The shelf running all the way across the width could be a slight barrier between the range and the hood.

It looks cute and unique! I would personally have wanted the hood to have a lip so you do not see the steel /metal part of the vent. Also in my experience, as many others also wonder about, these things need maintenance so this design does not allow for easy access to repair/change of lamp etc. And lastly I wish I could have had access to these vlogs when I was young, but unfortunately internet did not even exist at that time, believe it or not. Drew, you having a shelf between the stovetop and the range hood defeats the purpose of the range hood. The range hood is there to suck out the heat, steam and grease in the air as you cook. The shelf gets in the way of it doing its job. This is a BIG mistake. You chose form over function.

In general, most installations require a distance from 20" to 24" between the bottom of the hood and the cooking surface. Over a gas range, this distance should be between 24" and 30", unless otherwise specified. If the range hood is mounted too high above the recommended height, it won't be able to extract away the fumes. That means you'll have to clean the range hood, your cooktop, countertops, and cabinets more often. In other words, your range hood won't function as it's supposed to.

I love the look, but had the same concern. There's also an issue with a plug in an inaccessible concealed space. It would have been better to hardwire in a safe jbox. Though it's not likely to happen, a plug can fault, spark, etc. and therefore should have some sort of access panel. I don't know residential code that well but that's not allowed at least in a commercial space.

Lone, I am thoroughly impressed. One of my pet peeves are the range hoods that are oversized, overly ornate and gaudy they become the focal point of the kitchen. It is a fan, so NO sense in making those so ornate and big, they steal the show. This does the job, but is inobtrusive we can now appreciate the other things going on in that room. At first the curves seemed unnecessary but they really help to blend the hood into the wall and that architecture, making it even more subtle. Also very impressed with the way you built it, now with the box the noise should be greatly reduced. I have never heard of "poly board either, but what a great thing, this would take forever to use drywall. This design and execution could not be improve upon. Maybe use a metal drywall corner bead for the bottom lip, so it is not easily chipped (the same thing you would use on an arch)? Congrats Lone and much respect. Anybody could use this design idea, even without the curves, and painted the same color as the walls. It has an adobe vibe, in keeping with your Spanish house, but without the curves, it would not be. The beauty is in the simplicity. WOW, Fantastic. A++++

It looks utterly fabulous! I love it. The only thing I would change would be to recess the hood liner into the bottom of the hood cover. You had the space inside to mount it higher, then you wouldn't be able to see the stainless so readily when standing on the ground (because the edge would have a longer lip on it). That said, it still looks wonderful and it's always easier tossing out what if's from my chair. Your home is going to be stunning when you're finished!!

All that plaster is going to be covered in grease in no time flat. How on earth is that plaster going to be scrubbable? That shelf too is horrendous imo. I am more concerned about practicalities than getting external approval and likes. Also seeing all that silver coloured vent competing with the gold...uuuggghh! I think Drew needs to give more thought to his choices. Everything is going to look extremely cheap and classless in the long terrm at this rate.

I forgot to show that once the frame was mounted to the wall we actually unscrewed it and it’s able to drop down now! I believe before the wood was warped but screwing to to the wall brought it back to a perfect rectangle. I hope that makes sense

I think this looks really good, however, this is a really DANGEROUS installation and not effective. DO NOT RECREATE THIS IN YOUR OWN HOME. 1. It is VERY dangerous to use a plug-in connection in a permanent installation as it creates a fire hazard. 2. The height of the hood renders it completely ineffective; it's way too high.

Hi, Drew the range hood turned out amazing and the style goes well with your home, you're very creative and you're not afraid of trying new things, however I think you should lower the range hood to where your marble backsplash end, It will funtion, flow and look aesthetically better. That means sacrificing the marble shelf.

Have you ever heard the term 'self praise is no recommendation.' Instead of telling us how great your design is it might be a good idea to hear/read viewer's feedback, this VLOG sounded rather self-congratulatory, and a tad narcissistic, you might want to tone the ego down a little, it's a bit of a turn-off at this end. I'll probably get blocked for what I've said, but oh well, never mind, I'd rather be straight up as opposed to a sycophantic follower. I do like a lot of what you have done in the past, but the lack of humility is starting to get a little over the top! Sorry, but I think this particular job is a very sloppy. You may be able to hide the inside, but I'm not sure shoddy workmanship is the best way going forward. I feel confident in saying that I believe you can do better than this! You might have been better to use an adjustable metal band to hold the range-hood duct hose in place. Not impressed at all, and that hasn't always been the case, because I know you can do better!.

interesting and creative idea. I believe you can also use drywall instead of the poly board. I heard u say that the reason was because poly board is more flexible but drywall can also be made into curves by scoring it and the plastering to perfect rounded pieces. Unless of course there was another reason for your choice, then I would LOVE to know. I think this is an amazing idea. I've contemplated ways to update my mom's range hood without spending thousands for one of those industrial sized ones. Strongly considering this as an option. Many great ideas! Thank u for being bold enough to go for them 🤗🤗

Edit: also, you obviously have no experience of cooking food, that rod and pots will be greasy in a matter of month, if you decide to cook :-) practical part is missing and thats why people going to school to be proper designers

-central Wisconsin: Drew, you never mentioned when you were securing the bracket that will hold the fan hood, or when you were screwing any of that hood frame into the wall or ceiling, that you were screwing into studs. I hope you were vs drywall. I just thought I’d mention it, so in future videos, you can remind people to be sure to screw into studs. as for newbies doing at-home renovations, this could be a valuable piece of information/reminder.

I agree with a lot of the comments below. While the design is quite interesting and I like it, I think the vent is too small for the size of the oven he will be putting there. Also, if there is any maintenance needed for the hood, or if it has to be replaced, it's going to be difficult and all that will have to be demolished.

I think it looks stunning! If I had the patience I think I might actually be able to do this. One word of caution though, it's a good idea to check local ordinances cause many don't allow wood to be used above a stove unless it meets minimum allowances, meaning it must be more than so many inches above a heat source otherwise it presents a fire hazard. Just be careful. Great job! Love it!

Height of your range hood will affect its efficiency, as will the obstruction created by the shelf you installed. Range hoods not only take out steam but pull out way more cooking oils than you would ever expect, even if you do not fry! There is a reason that kitchen surfaces are usually glossy because they are the most cleanable; rough and/or sanded surfaces will be a bear to clean on a repeated basis.
