@@TheBoondocksaint117 this is not true. Characters like the Joker know that they are a bad person doing bad things. The Joker doesn’t “think he’s right”. He’s just doing it for the laughs. Most villains in comics don’t think of themselves as the real “good guy”. They know they’re bad, but they don’t care. Harrow legitimately thinks he’s a good guy. He thinks he’s creating a better world. He doesn’t care about gaining power or wealth. He just wants what he perceives to be a better world.

Jake was there throughout the series. He made the date that Steven was oblivious to, Marc would not cheat on Layla so he would not have done that. Jake is a driver and as you can see a killer, we have slaughters where there were blackouts; that was Jake but those unfamiliar with the comics assumed it was Marc. In addition, Jake is a driver so that was obviously him driving backwards in the first episode. That is who did all of the bloody events. Harrow was likely walking on glass as a self-sacrificing commitment to Ammit. As always, Your reactions were priceless and I look forward to your next.

@@michaelm.1947 they didn't open the sarcophagus because they either suspected the 3rd persona from the rooftop incident and knew it was a psychopathic one, or they're smart enough not to be curious from the vigorous sound from the coffin. At least Steven made a sound "let me out" so Marc recognized his accent. and i think Marc achieved balance because he left behind Steven and Jake. perhaps his action of leaving Jake meant that he denied him as a part of himself, since he never had direct interaction with Jake like he did with Steven, he's not responsible for Jake's potential misdeeds.

I found it In a recent interview, Ethan Hawke explained why Arthur Harrow keeps the glass in his shoes; and it is as unsettling as you would imagine. Speaking with Variety, Hawke stated, “That [scene] really sprang out of my imagination and our conversations. When you read a comic book, some of the pages have eight drawings, some of them have 16, some have four, and then every now and then, they’ll give like a villain one full-page drawing.” “I kept asking the writers and directors if it was a comic book, what would his full-page drawing be?” Hawke noted, “And they were like, ‘What do you think it was?'” Hawke continued, “I started really meditating on that, and I started thinking about spiritual people who go crazy, who get mad on their own spiritual pride, and how often that turns inward and you see that they secretly self-lacerating in some way and hating themselves.” “Because we all have sin, and the idea that somebody is free of sin is not really possible if you’re human.” the actor noted, “And so with the self-hatred and the turning inward, I had this image of him listening to a hymn while he put broken glass in his shoes, that he hid from other people.” Hawke concluded by stating, “I knew he had a cane, and I kept saying, ‘wait, I have a cane. Do I have a limp?’ And I thought, ‘Ahh, I know why he has a cane,’ So I told them this idea. And this is what I mean about what was so surprising about Marvel: They’re like, ‘Let’s shoot that. Thats a great idea.'”

The asylum was in his head. That’s why the doctor didn’t know why his feet were bleeding and why the “office” was so incomplete and mixed with ancient artifacts. The glass was audible every time he stepped so I think Marc realized what it was.
@andrewjuby6339
@andrewjuby6339 2 жыл бұрын
I also think it's based, in part, on reality. Marc mentions that he remembers bringing himself to the asylum; I think it's very possible that he *did* check himself into a mental health hospital (perhaps even the very one Harrow ends up in) and it's his memories of that place that are informing the images he sees.

It's also a nod to Comics Arthur Harrow, who is a doctor and scientist who studies _pain,_ and develops methods to desensitize people to pain. His experiments started in Auschwitz on Jews during the war, but this was covered up. He later performed more experiments on farmers in Mexico, while claiming he was experimenting on animals. He suffers from paralysis in his face which causes him constant pain, and his experiments are a search for a cure. TLDR: Arthur Harrow is a pain nut, hence the glass in his sandals.

The reason Marc "drew the line" was because he finally wasn't technically in Khonshu's service anymore and he didn't HAVE to kill just because he was told to, which he never truly wanted to do in the first place. The Harrow psyche ward scenes always happen when Marc/Steven can't deal with the memories they're dealing with at the the time. Those scenes were his "organizing" principle to help him get to the next step of what he needed to do in the real world. I also think the scene in the end in Steven's apt wasn't 'real'. I think it's where they "chose" to reside while Jake is actually in control.

@@ge2719 I love how everything you said is factually incorrect and proven by countless medical and psychiatric professionals. Imagine writing all that trying to prove that a mental illness is not real when we literally have brain scans proving insane fluctuations in brainwaves when alters change. A person who is "Faking it" by no means could will their brains to give such drastically different results. A brain isn't something we can control with willpower so that alone proves that there is even minimal evidence to suggest that DiD is in fact real. Rather than trying to use entire paragraphs of pseudoscience, poor societal observations and anecdotes, how about you try and link at least 1 or 2 studies disproving DiD? The burden of proof lies on the one who makes the claim.

@hopegraham4191 2 жыл бұрын
@@ge2719 DID is a recognized diagnosis in the DSM5. What you said about recollection of traumatic memories is blatantly untrue. While multiple alters in a system can remember traumatic events, there are those in the system that cannot. Not to mention that integrations can occur where two alters merge into one identity, sharing all of their memories and becoming a stronger person that is more capable of dealing with the trauma. Alters often need to leave notes for other alters in the system to remember where they left things, or always leave things in the same place where everyone in the system will know to find them. Alters in a system can also sometimes communicate with each other in their internal world to remember important things about the outside world. Alters ability to communicate with each other about what is happening in the outside world in no way correlates to remembering the same trauma and past memories. There are some people who have been exposed for faking it, but in most cases this is indicative of other mental health issues that caused them to want to fake it in the first place, and does not invalidate those who have actually been diagnosed with DID by a mental health professional. Anyone who actually has DID does not ignore their problems and blame other alters in their system; the truth of DID is that no matter who in the system has caused a problem, everyone in the system is responsible for it and has to take the blame for the alter who is responsible. And people with DID who do not take responsibility for the actions of everyone in their system are not faking it, they are just immature people who have not yet learned that they are part of a bigger whole and cannot isolate themselves from the rest of their system.

The Kang Reveal is up there with "I am Iron man" , "You should have gone for the head", "That makes you the Scarlet witch" and the X-Men theme at the end of Ms Marvel as the most crucial moments in the entire MCU. Remind me how exactly Loki is "pointless". It showed as a bureaucratic system that controls the flow of time, set up the next big bad and made the stakes of everything before it look like child's play in comparison. Am I misunderstanding you or are you underestimating it's importance to the wider mcu lol.

@@himum3429 Okay... before "Loki" there was a "Time Bureau" Right? We just "Hadn't seen it yet". And there was a "Kang the friendly" who we had never seen. And because of these things that existed, that we never knew about, there couldn't be a Multiverse. But we needed to have a Multiverse for "Future Projects", so we had a "Loki" show, to introduce "The old Time Bureau" and "The old Kang", and during "Loki" we destroy "The old Time Bureau" and "The old Kang". So we had an entire series, that just un happened. We meet "Old Time Bureau" which now no longer exists; Morpheus doesn't know Loki, the "Time Cops" never learned they were cut off and Rebelled, and we don't know what the "New Time Bureau" that works for "New Kang" does. "The Old Kang" (who warned us that a "New Kang" would come Conquer the Timeline) has died, and "New Kang" Conquered the Timeline, and we don't know anything about him or what sort of "Kang" he is. The entire "Loki" series could have been a 5 minute "Dream" about their being a Group that fucks with Time, and some sort of Dude (see the statues) who controls it... because Everything else (aside from She Loki... maybe?) didn't happen (to anyone but Loki). And you don't need a "There used to be no Multiverse, but now there is" to introduce a Multiverse, you just have a Multiverse... maybe the Multiverse never impacted the MCU previously and requires no explanation, or it did, in "Unseen" stuff that they could still write.

12:29 Now that you mentioned, i have the theory that one part of psychiatric ward is the afterlife, but other parts, like where Steven is seeing the movie, where he talks with Harrow, that is his mind making a mental construct, trying to find logic but also working as a safe place. That's why after Steven and Marc have a mental breakdown in the episode, they go back there.

I agree. But to build on it, I also think they go to the psych ward because they can’t fall back on another personality to relieve them of their emotions and stress when in the underworld as they’re both there present at the same time. And since they’re both there in the underworld, dissociative identity disorder doesn’t happen so they try to relieve their emotions by imagining them being in the psych ward.

31:50 it's part of Marc's story-arc ! It's actually the first time in forever that he felt like he had the choice to kill or not. He always felt obligated to kill before, that's what Layla reminded him of : his deal with Khonshu was done, he was free. He could choose to not kill. It wasn't about empathy or about sparing Harrow even. It was about Marc being more than just a killer. Killing on his own terms not when he felt forced to. ...and then the aftercredit happened. What a tragic irony.

Couple of things; 1) We actually get the reason why he puts broken glass in his shoes. When he resurrected Ammit and was told by her that his scales were not balanced, he says that he hoped his penance would help balance his scales. So, he was wearing the glass to torture himself as a punishment for his past sins. 2) DID is a very complicated mental health topic and it has been represented on media very poorly. This (as far as I know anyway) is the first Hollywood project to handle the topic in such a sophisticated way. Oscar Isaac said that he did a lot of research about DID getting ready for this role. And it really showed the struggles of the people who has it. I suggest you look up videos of real DID systems watching the show and talking about it's accuracy. It is very informing. 3) You not being sure about what was real and what was not in that mental hospital section is the exact thing that makes Moon Knight comics (especially the Jeff Lemire run) so good and engaging. In the comics you're never sure what is real and what is not. Marc/Steven/Jake are unreliable narrators. And that's makes for a very intriguing read, and like this show demonstrated, a very intriguing watch. 4) This show was comic-accurate on the aspects I wanted it to be but they also had some amazing original additions like Laila or the changes they did to Harrow and Jake. They handled a sensitive topic like mental health well in my humble opinion. The acting was phenomenal by everybody but especially Oscar Isaac. Long story short, I enjoyed it so so much and I think it's my favorite MCU show so far.

Yeah, it’s a sad situation where a parent being complacent/bystander effect. While of course, you have to feel bad cuz he’s trying his best, you know he didn’t do remotely enough. He needed to send his wife to therapy/a psychiatric hospital. I know those can be expansive, as mental health in the US is awful, but stuff needed to be done to stop the abuse since if you don’t you’re contributing to it. I know parents have to do the whole “united front” and agree with everything the other does and only disagree in private, but so often by keeping your mouth shut in the presence of abuse you’re either condoning it and teaching your child that their feelings, opinions aren’t valid. You’re making them feel alone, that they should just accept the abuse, and that’s it’s normal. You’re saying that the abuser is RIGHT and you don’t love your child as much as your abusive SO. It can really mess your child up.

The fact that it was such a large departure is one of the reasons I loved it so much. The psych ward, when he's there with Dr Harrow in the office, seems to be where Marc/Steven/Jake (I guess) goes mentally when he is overwhelmed. I don't know much about DID so I don't want to start talking and get it all wrong, but my understanding is that the office with Harrow was not a real physical place. The glass in his shoes was Harrow trying to serve penance for his imbalance. He tells Ammit that he hoped his penance would be enough to balance his scales. Also I really don't understand why people feel so bad for the dad. Sure he was traumatized too, but he just stood by while his wife mentally, emotionally, and physically abused his child, for years. He could have taken him and gotten him out of that situation and gotten him help but he just stayed there and let it all happen. He might have been powerless to help his wife but he wasn't powerless to help his son, yet he did nothing.

"Just get some therapy" If his brother drowned sometime in the 70's or early 80's, then getting therapy was very problematic. In the 70's and 80''s, therapy wasn't as popular as it is today. A lot of people want to blame "mental health stigma" for why so many people didn't seek treatment. But there were a lot of other reasons. The 50's and 60's were a mental health horror story. And it didn't matter what your what your wealth or social status was. (Look up the story of Rosemary Kennedy to see what I mean.) It wasn't until 1967 that they stopped doing transorbital lobotomies, where they jammed an icepick into your eye socket, then wiggled it around to destroy brain tissue. AFAIK, the better psychotherapies (like Cognitive Behavior Therapy) didn't see widespread use until the late 80's. A lot of the previous therapies were very much fumbling around in the dark, with mixed results. Also, there was a lot of reluctance in religious groups to seek therapy. I don't know about the Jewish community at the time, but Southern Baptists were all about "pray the pain away". And sadly, many of them still are. To complicate matters, what we see in the show suggests a lot of denial/enabling/walking on eggshells. It looked to me like a toxic equilibrium had been reached, and no of the family members were stable enough to change that.

I loved this show. A few thoughts on some points you brought up. Harrow breaking the glass in his shoes was the penance he referenced when talking to Amit towards the end. He thought it would compensate for his misdeeds. It shows that he was a true believer and was willing to be devoured by Amit if she judged him negatively. The mental hospital part disorients everyone who watched this show so don't feel bad. It's based on one of the comic runs. Here's essentially what is happening. When Marc dies he is brought into the Duat, the Egyptian underworld that Taweret was describing. When she was talking to Marc and Steven she mentioned that the human mind is not able to perceive the Duat as it truly is. The mind perceives it in a form that is recognizable to the person. In Marc's case this is a mental hospital because of his mental illness, and because he has most likely been in a similar hospital before. Marc mentions at one point the "Organizing Principle". This principle is why most modern cities use a grid plan, or why the Solar System is organized around the Sun at the central point, with the planets revolving around it. In this way his mind has used the organizing principle in the creation of this "hospital". Most of the doors lead to memories. Two of them have his other two personalities in sarcophagi. There are people and objects from his subconscious throughout. You see this mainly in the large common room that the show puts us in shortly after he dies. Crowley the living statue was running the bingo game. Steven's boss and Layla are there. The orderlies are the Amit cult cops that took Steven. There's cupcakes from the cupcake truck in the first episode. Steven's rubix cube. Dr. Harrow is something different though. The personalities show up in Dr. Harrow's office everytime one of them has a hard time accepting the truth of a memory, or just anytime they are confused. Marc's mind has created the Dr.'s office as a place he goes to when he needs to mentally work something out. The Dr. role was simply a projection of someone he knows in real life. It was probably Harrow because he tends to speak in a calming manner. He also talks somewhat like a therapist. Also, the last Dr. Harrow scene when we see blood from his feet was also in Marc's mind, but it was a dream, and most likely represented the fact that Marc and Steven had found a equilibrium. Another part of this whole thing is the boat deck. When Marc steps out onto it, he is essentially leaving the Duat projection of his mind, and entering the Duat that the gods see, outside of his mind. The idea being that he must reenter the interior of the boat (his mind) to gain access to his memories. A couple other things. In the comics there is a character called the "Scarlet Scarab". Layla is the MCU's version of this character, hence the wings on the suit. Her father's name is very similar to the comic SS's real name. Her father also had a scarlet colored scarf on when he died, with a big scarab on it. The one Layla made for him. He called her his "Little Scarab". Layla in the mental hospital scene had a bandaid on her pinky with a scarlet colored scarab. Also, you've seen Jake Lockely before. He was the violent personality in Dr. Harrow's office in the cold open to episode 5. The one with the bandaid on his nose and a east coast accent. Jake speaks Spanish in the end credit scene but he's most likely multilingual. Like a lot of cabbies or drivers in general. Jake speaking Spanish is also a nod to Oscar Issac's Guatamalan heritage. Sorry, that's a lot.

After a few rewatches, I made sense of the reason why Harrow walks on glass to be due to a kind of self-flagellation. That or since even he's aware of how his own scales are imbalanced and how through his devotion to Ammit he was hoping for it to reverse his scales, he could've seen it also as a form of penance working towards that.

You can hear the glass crinkling in Harrow's shoes sometimes when he walks. It's implied that he does it as penance for his sins, he cried when Ammit said his scales are in the red, in front of his God he's a sinner and was even willing to be killed by Ammit. This is similar to self-flagellation that happens to religious fanatics who want to erase their sins. Like some Christians in other parts of the world that are willing to reenact the suffering of Christ leading up to his crucifixion. The worshippers will get whipped and tortured before being crucified at a cross.

Moonknight is one of the best web series from Marvel. The chaos, the story and Isaac's acting took to a whole new level. Absolutely Loved it.

Harrow isn’t nearly as manipulative as Kingpin or Kilgrave, but that’s not a knock on Harrow as much as it is evidence as to how great Kingpin and Kilgrave are as the top villains of the MCU.

Just from the first episode I knew this would be my favorite MCU show, and sure enough it only got better as each episode went on

Episode 4: Marc arguing with Steven then punching himself cracked me up. On a heartfelt note though, Layla's dynamic with Steven is a clear contrast to her recent dynamic with Marc. All the same, I was glad that Steven told her why Marc was pushing her away to begin with. In real life, we've yet to find Alexander's tomb. Late last year, Egyptian officials reported that it might be buried in Siwa. Episode 5: Marc slapped himself violently because he was already dealing with the guilt of losing his brother Randall and Steven said the words that triggered his trauma. His mom Wendy would say those words to him. He didn't want to relive that, but Steven piled on the fact that millions including Layla were in danger. Episode 6: You know Wanda as the Scarlet Witch. Well now get to know Layla as the Scarlet Scarab! She can give Sam a run for his money (or a flight). I guess Doctor Octopus isn't the only one with competition. Mohamed Diab's daughter wanted to straighten her hair because she never saw anyone in major media who looked like her. Now she's proud to have her hairstyle after seeing the MCU's first Egyptian superhero and next potential Avenger. And finally, my parents are from Quetzaltenango. So I freaked out when I saw Oscar speaking Spanish at the end.

I love love LOVE Layla's and Steven's interactions. I know Disney would never do this, but I would love it if Layla, Marc, and Steven got together in a poly relationship. They all fit together for different reasons but I'm especially happy how Marc's and Steven's relationship improved. I feel both need Layla in their lives.

If you want to see a darker show from the mcu, watch the daredevil series. Imo it is THE best show that marvel has made by a long shot.

I really enjoyed this show and I give Kevin Feigie a lot of love for exploring mental health in such a respectful way. WandaVision addressed mental health as well with grief and Moon Knight DID was explored with Marc using Steven to escape from his painful world but had to face it in death was acted out brilliantly by Oscar Isaac

They did such a wonderful job with this show, especially episode 5. That was a dark, deep emotional mind fuck. I'm glad they did this as a show as opposed to a movie, so they didn't have to rush to tell the story. On a side note, you freaking out in episode 4 made me laugh so hard and it's something I needed since my father passed Tuesday morning. Thank you for that, Nat.

Oscar's character has DiD. You should check braiDIDbunch's reactions to this series from DiD perspective. I think it'll clear up lot of your questions at the end.

Oscar Isaac's brother Mike often played the other role when Isaac was playing the other one, when both of him were in the scene together. And then Isaac would play the other part similarly.

Jake, the driver, has been there all along. He’s been the one doing the truly dirty work. Remember when Steven got into the cupcake truck and said he didn’t even have a license? While Marc compartmentalized his happy thoughts into Steven, he put his worst thoughts into Jake.

We don’t have proof that the worst thoughts are Jake. Esp considering it’s likely that Jake is the one who let the cultists go and tried to get to the airport in episode 3. Steven wouldn’t leave Cairo when the world is in danger.

I felt the same way as you when the show ended. Did some digging, cuz as much as I am a fan of the MCU I never grew up with comics, and apparently the show has the same vibe as the comics. I read that with every issue or story on comics would ended very open, leaving the reader with a bunch of question left for interpretation.

I hope you finally give daredevil a chance, now that you’re “caught up”. Because Matt is gonna keep showing up in more D+ and you’re gonna keep cutting his scenes from your reactions. Like you did with No Way Home. Now its the time. Please at least watch season 1 of DD
