Interesting build. I really wish someone would build an adaptor for the original optical drive, that'd be cool. Then you could have the option of booting off OG discs or solid state.

I was actually toying around with the idea of using one of those USB optical drives in place of the original.. but apparently loading ROMs from a disc isn't supported on Recalbox or Retropie.. :(

I've accidently pulled pads like that up when soldering onto PCBs and I recommend getting a cheap fiber glass pencil to scrape away the silk screen. It does a much cleaner and quicker job than an exacto knife AND it's great for scraping away silk screen on cracked two layer PCBs to expose fine traces so you can bridge the crack with wire or solder.
@CF-Builds

@@CF-Builds oh now that's a cool idea!! You have to revisit it someday! I just watched a video from macho nacho about a custom portable PS1, and using a small (or slightly larger) screen like he used would be fantastic. You should look into making custom PCBs that make this kind of project easy for everyone. You could sell them and increase your budget 😁

If you used some 90 / 180 degree USB cables then you could move the Pi closer to the center of the case, enabling you to have access to the SD card from the disc lid.

Nice one, though for the money you spent on that Raspi, there is also mini PC options that fit snuggely, like the Radxa x4 (or any miniITX for that matter), enabling a bit more emulation
@CF-Builds
@CF-Builds 18 күн бұрын
The pi 5 cost me $50 at microcenter (: I definitely want to do another build (probably a Gamecube) in the future with a mini Ryzen system inside W/ fully functional controller ports and buttons just like this 😁
@bembelknecht
@bembelknecht 18 күн бұрын
@CF-Builds yeah, Raspi is still an amazing thing, it's just not the "value-king" anymore, especially when you build inside a case like that; I put an Ryzen 3 ITX into mine, cost me about 5k pesos, that's roughly $85 total (my acquired PSx was actually dead but in a decent cosmetic state); will definetly look into reviving the controller ports like you did, honestly didn't think about it
@bembelknecht
@bembelknecht 13 күн бұрын
@PaulDenton-r9j ryzen is an overall better deal for gaming, partly because of the GPU, yes. It can handle upscaling better than their Intel counterparts, any SBC/ARM based system has a plethora of other problems, lack of instruction sets being the most severe; there is simply not good enough software yet or they have to step up their specs. Something more similar to Apple's M2 or Snapdragon elite as a (lower cost) alternative is what I would like to see
@bembelknecht
@bembelknecht 13 күн бұрын
@PaulDenton-r9j basically any Ryzen 5 3000G or above should be fine for GC, PS2 and Wii with upscaling to 1080; if you go for batocera it might be a good idea to check for used deals (old office units, tiny like HP elitedesk) around you, in my area those currently sell for around 5000pesos, that's roughly 85€/$; prepare to clean and repaste and potentially add another stick of RAM with the same capacity. As for storage, a 500GB HDD or SSD is good enough, my (pretty much complete) GC set takes a little over 500, you might want to be a bit more selective. If you can live without some of that upscaling power, even an i3 9th Gen has you covered (though I would opt for an i5), in my market this is currently ~4000peso/65€/$; add some good controller to it and there you go.
@bembelknecht
@bembelknecht 13 күн бұрын
@PaulDenton-r9j partly, I still recommend it for easy set up especially for older Gen consoles; nowadays I install the emulators directly since there was some backscene shenanigans between a few emulators and retroarch. It is also good to have more recent versions of the respective emulators when you go for PS3 & PS4

I'm more interested in the software side..that bootup screen ive only ever seen once before on another Playstation to RPi build..a mini PSX shell with a Pi on Retrocution channel..years ago..he found a way to setup playstation boot sequence and hide the hundreds of lines of text that you get on normal boot..I'm assuming you discovered the same method..that amazes me more than all the modding and soldering..

Nice, but... Couldn't you have saved yourself a lot of trouble by simply 3D printing a mounting bracket to hold the two Playstation to USB adapters in the vase, similar to what you did for the HDMI port? Then you wouldn't have needed to disassemble them and solder all those wires.
@CF-Builds
