The remote control is a great idea. In the winter I’m all tucked into by blankets and I have having to reach into the cold to turn the page is really annoying. I read somewhere that they were going to have the kindle use the movement of your eyes to learn when to turn the page without the reader touching it.
@CriminOllyBlog9 ай бұрын
There have certainly been mobile phone apps that use to cameras to track eye movement and scroll text to match that.

Looks great. There are about 3 ereaders I want to combine to make a perfect one for myself though. Everything is juuuust about there
@d.r.martin63019 ай бұрын
My ideal ereader has always been the original 1st gen Fire. It hadn't yet been saddled with all the Android tablet-y crap that subsequent generations of Fire came with. It was essentially a color ereader with a nice LCD screen. If Amazon rebooted that exact design, I'd buy it in an instant. I have the current Kindle, and it's nice, but I miss the color book covers.
@aleidadiaz22619 ай бұрын
I still have mine. It’s the best.
@CriminOllyBlog9 ай бұрын
I didn’t realise that. I think if Amazon did a Fire with a colour e-ink screen and a very curated set of apps it could work very well
@d.r.martin63019 ай бұрын
@@CriminOllyBlog It doesn't have to be e-ink. I'm suggesting they just make a basic color e-reader with an ordinary LCD screen. It would be cheap and easy to do.

A big drawback with this device for me would be all the distracting apps (like KZbin) that make it like a tablet. That's the best part of regular ereaders is that it is reading only and not subject to these distractions. If I would go for a new colour ereader, I think I would choose the new Kobo.

I noticed at 8:31 when you turned the page there's a distinct line in the middle of the next page. The line appears to be a ghost image of the black border of the comic and thus what is causing the ghosting. Those types of visual artifacts on comics are extremely distracting to me, are there settings on the device to clean that up by forcing a full refresh after every page turn?
@CriminOllyBlog8 ай бұрын
Yes there is, the screen is super configurable and you can tweak the refresh rate
@Toliman.8 ай бұрын
If you tap the half-sun icon at the middle top, it opens up the refresh menu. It's the same panel and menu that's on other Bigme eInk tablets. This can also change the blue/yellow light levels for afternoon/evening/night lighting brightness levels and change the contrast for different lighting environments. If you choose HD or Regal mode, it's a lot slower, but it removes these kinds of scrolling artifacts. Different modes introduce different problems, so it's a trade-off. Slower/Quality modes have a sharper and higher quality image that is better for comic/manga, but the slow redraw can be a nuisance in books and drawing/note-taking as it takes half a second or longer to clear and redraw the color elements, as the black and color resolution is different. The slower modes also change the visuals on text and images, so it can be a preference to how long you want to wait between page turns or transitions. Faster modes introduce more ghosting/artifacts and make scrolling better, but it leaves 'grit' and menus/lines behind as a result. This can also be improved with 'auto-clear' but if it's a real deterrent for you, check the Boox Note Air C/Tab Ultra C series as they have a (more expensive) clean process. It's very similar in size/features, but there's less discounts with the Boox series. Its also a different GPU/Processor so it has differences if you put them side by side. For comics, you can create a linked preset for your preferred refresh / comics mode, so it switches presets when you open the app. If you use something like Kindle, you'll need to change the refresh to something that works for the books/font sizes you use. eInk tends to have these artifacts as power is used to 'paint' the screen. The less the screen changes, the less power it consumes. Which is why a kindle can last weeks on a charge. However, these new tablet eReaders are running Android 11, so it's nearly always going to be using power to check Wifi, run background tasks.

@CriminOllyBlog9 ай бұрын
Sorry, I don’t get to all of my comments. I don’t think there is a way to sort within collections, but if the Amazon metadata knows that a book is in a series (which I’m pretty sure it does for the 87th Precinct) it will sort them in order automatically

As someone who would want a colour e-reader just for reading illustrated books and comics, this doesn’t look that impressive compared to printed paper. Until the colours are much richer it seems like pointless tech-again, in terms of being an e-reader. I won’t be ditching paper comics yet it seems
@CriminOllyBlog9 ай бұрын
Yeah there is definitely some way to go before the technology is at that level. I’d compare the colour reproduction to be equivalent to cheaply printed comics on newspaper style paper at the moment.
