Just as an aside: The 'short man complex' was a myth invented by London as Propaganda against Napoleon. Napoleon was actually above average height at the time. London decided that arraying any of their enemies as 'small men' made the public feel superior. It's a little frightening how much popular myth is actually English propoganda (Like Great Britain beating Napoleon at Waterloo, while only being 26% of the allied troops that were there against Napoleon....and most of the Brits being Irish and Scots they sell it as a 'great English victory')

Napoleon was actually average height for his time, he was a small child however. The Myth about his height was most likely from the British who constantly mocked the french emperor.

@joelhofmann5840 3 жыл бұрын
I never understood the logic behind that tho. Of course they tried to show their citizens he isnt that powerfull, but doesnt it more lead to "hes small and not that strong, but he still was able to fk with us"? I mean... If you are about even in fights and try to make the enemie look small, you make yourself look small. Maybe im just missing parts of history...
@chaost4544
@chaost4544 3 жыл бұрын
Another confusion about his height is our misinterpretation of the way french measured length at the time which put him at 5"2 when in reality he was more along the lines of 5"6 which is about average height for that time. @@joelhofmann5840 that's a traditional propaganda war tactic. You even see it on ancient carvings and walls where someone's enemy looks smaller, monsterous, play into negative stereotypes, etc. It's a way to make your enemy look less than human. A great example of this is WWII posters from all sides of the conflict. Every single major country used propaganda to make the other side look small and subhuman.

@@joelhofmann5840 Another part of it is that Napoleon promoted officers based on merit and skill, not based on how they made him look. He basically didn't give a shit about PR, he just wanted dudes who would win battle for him, even if they looked more physically imposing than he did when they were standing next to each other. Most rulers at the time would make an effort to appear larger or more imposing than their subordinates, but Napoleon just didn't give a fuck about that.

It's a nutritional thing. Most people, at least in countries like the US, eat much better from a much younger age than anyone except the richest of aristocrats did throughout most of history. That's actually part of why so many cultures saw nobles/aristocrats as being somehow divinely ordained to their position; they tended to be larger and more attractive than the average peasant, because they weren't malnourished and overworked for their entire lives.

@@PerthTowne Really WW2 is germany vs russia. The rest is just lite side show. e.g Germany lost more in Stalingrad than it lost fighting EVERYONE ELSE COMBINED in the ENTIRE war. (England, France, America, Belgium, netherlands, norway, poland, yugoslavia, etc etc, plus all the other allies - canada, australia, etc etc etc.) Soviets lost more than double the germans in Stalingrad. While prolonged , it was less than 6 months. Just one battle less than 6 months in a theater that spanned thousands of KM with millions & millions of men that lasted 4 years. The Eastern front dwarfs everything war related the world has ever seen. Eastern front toll: Germany 4.5 million military deaths, Russia: 9-14 million military, 20 million civilian.

@@MOBOBBA2166 That's true, but I think it's more of an "insecurity complex" more than it is actually about height. A lot of short guys are insecure about being short, and people who are insecure about themselves, whether it's about their height, or weight, or race, or some other physical factor, tend to aggressively over-compensate in the other direction, which is where the idea of a "Napoleon Complex" comes from I think.

My great-grandpa was in WWI (US Army) and he met my great-grandma after the war after being stationed in a German village. This happened in the late 1910s and already Hitler was a name known then. My German 2 times Great-grandpa must have had great foresight because he feared Hitler and didn't support him so he pleaded with my great-grandpa to marry one of his daughters so he would know one of his children were safe in America. My great-grandpa was an honorable man (from what I've heard) so he chose my great-grandma (I think because she was the eldest). WWII was horrendous for my German family for I had relatives who were mere teens (like 13) when they were forced to be in the German army (or else their families would be killed). And then there were the atrocities the Russians did when they traveled through Germany. My family had to hide. My great-grandma and grandma would mail things over to help whenever they could. So I never like it when people assume that all Germans were Nazis when it's not the case.

Think about this: If it wasn't for the Treaty of Versailles and the actions of Benito Mussolini, Hitler likely would have never gained the motivation to rise to power. When Hitler began running for office, he initially didn't have much support. But as the economy went from bad to worse to devastating, the people began to look more and more towards Hitler. Most people who voted Hitler didn't vote for him because they aligned with the Nazi ideology, but because when the current state of the union is so bad that you can't even afford basic things like food, desperation takes hold and you're just willing to go with any solution. And that's what I believe the majority of Germans who voted for Hitler did. They were desperate, plain and simple. And while Hitler did fix the economy, it ultimately came at a terrible cost.

People get freaked out about Aryan supremacy, but the origin of that word(Aryan) has a really weird, circuitous connection to Tibet.

Historically, territorial treaties are ONLY enforced by military power. Not to be confused with actual military force, if one of the powers “upholding” the treaty isn’t a major military power, it will be violated by one side or the other eventually. They don’t have to use that military might all the time, but it has to be there as a threat or the treaty will eventually be meaningless. This isn’t just a hitler thing, it goes way back to ancient history.

People are short back then cuz they were shorter back then, heck Napoleon Bonaparte was actually considered average height for his time. Stalin was 5ft 2 I think something around there. I know I might be wrong somewhere though.

I noticed that they said that Hitler was mostly bombing military targets and then it was Churchill bombing Berlin that caused him to get angry and then start bombing British civilian targets. That is not true. The Germans were the first to bomb a British civilian Target. I think it may have been a mistake but still they were first.

The British Airforce was not outnumbered. The British Airforce actually kicked the German Air Force ass. Its a old trope that is not true. The small strategy changes didn't effect much. Germany had no chance of taking Britain anytime soon.

Well he was about 5'6' which was shorter than the average male height at the time, but only by about an inch. He was not short enough to merit the way he is often portrayed in popular culture.

My Favorite part of World War Two from a Tactical perspective was the Fall of France. NOW BEFORE ANY OF YALL IN THE COMMENTS CALL CALL ME A FUCKIN NAZI OR SOME SHIT, hear me out. I DO NOT support Fascism, I do not support any type of racial superiority complexes, I don't even support Western Imperialism. Anything that does harm to people who don't deserve it I don't get down with AT ALL. However this is why the fall of France is one of my favorite things about WWII. Just a handful of decades before (I'm talking about WW1) the battle lines that were made of up trenches saw years of horror. Death, amputations, PTSD, constant bombardments, TRUE HELL neither side being able to gain the upper hand. France was one of the major front lines. Now bring it up to speed (World War two). Germany basically made a slow attack into Belgium which the Gernerals knew would bring the mass of the allied army up to meet it leaving a huge gap in the front line that Germany was able to punch through the Ardennes with. Not only that Hitler and his generals KNEW it would work so they made sure they concentrated most of their forces there at the point that they were going to break through. They legit pushed 50 army divisions (About 750,000 men.) UNDECTED through the Ardennes.Then they straight up FUCKED THE ALLIES UP! So to sum it up. what Germany tried to do in world war one and completely failed at getting hundreds of thousands of men killed and wounded with little to no ground gain... Hitler did in not even six weeks. Yeah, He obliterated the Allied army and then conquered ALL OF FRANCE in just SIX WEEKS. I do have a lot of favorite parts of world war 2 because my grandfather had fought in it with the 101st AB (One of America's most famous Para Divisions.) and I was taught a lot about the war and the tactical wins AND loses on both sides. So yea, this early war Axis maneuver was one of my favorites in terms of tactics. Cheers guys keep making these videos. I love watching people learn and you two got good charisma so it's easy to watch your videos and learn/laugh along side of you.

Appeasement was pretty stupid, but in their defense, at the time WWI had just ended and priority #1 was to avoid a repeat of that. No one, and I mean no one wanted another general war in Europe. War used to be viewed as a noble gentleman's endeavor, and going off to war was like a rite of passage for young men. WWI's industrialized carnage changed that view. War was now a tragic symbol of failed diplomacy and nobody wanted diplomacy to fail, so much so that they were in denial about the reality of the situation. WWI had made WWII inevitable. Yeah, they don't call it the Rape of Nanking for nothing. The reason France didn't extend the Maginot Line to the channel is because Belgium was an ally and they didn't want to risk damaging their relationship by building heavy defenses on their border. There were defenses along the Belgian border, they were just much lighter than along the German border. As I understand it, what happened with the London blitz was some German bombers that were supposed to bomb an RAF fuel depot or something got lost in the dark and bad weather and bombed London by mistake. Then Churchill ordered a retaliatory bombing of Berlin, and then the kid gloves came off. "What do you wanna do today, Hitler?" "The same thing we do very day, Heinrich. Try to take over the world!"
