This is a book summary for The Dip by Seth Godin. I almost quit KZbin in early 2024 because I was so frustrated at the lack of results… and in December 2024, I hit 100K subscribers. I didn’t quit because of this book.

As a former influencer with 50K Facebook followers, I quit content creation after engagement dropped post-pandemic and turned to freelancing. My first client taught me a valuable lesson: list your passions and goals (business, career, or dreams), focus on them for weeks/months, then reevaluate. Prioritize the top 3 that yield results and dedicate your energy to them. Lower priorities can still be pursued but should take a backseat due to limited time and energy. Did I quit? No, I just focus on what are providing results.

Yeah, exactly right. I've been doing this for years. A long time ago I was working on writing poetry. I gave myself a deadline and did everything I could to be successful in that timeline. If I don't get the response I want: no more. I didn't and switched gears. The new switch actually became successful. No more poetry. I use timelines all the time for anything I'm on. I've seen too many people just start something, not get far, or get something and then bail cause fame and fortune didn't occur day one. I have a book series. The first book I wrote sold 1 copy over 3 months. Most folks said obviously it was a dead project. I said no: I've got ideas for 3 or 4 books, and it won't hurt me to do them. I'll give it a year. 15 years later the series has 55 books, with 3 more in the works, and they've sold thousands of copies around the world. I've had 2 months in the past 10 years with no sales, and for a small press thing with little promotion I've sold 100 in December alone. All from 1 copy in 3 months .... I didn't give up. And, honestly, by the end of the first year I was selling every month.

The part about quitting strategically reminds me of something I learned in a course by the comic artist Jessica Abel. She mentioned the concepts of "Idea Dept" - sometimes, we carry around an idea, that grows and grows in our head, it becomes that amazing thing. But we never act on it. And we never touch it, because we know: It will never be as great as it as it is in your mind. She says "When you carry Idea Debt for too long, and your life moves on, is that your idea hangs on like an albatross. You can’t move on to new, exciting, more mature work, because you promised yourself you’d finish this thing." And sometimes these ideas belong to our older self. Maybe it was the business you wanted to do 10 years ago, the book you wanted to write in university. But it's not who you are anymore. We have to truly shake free of them, because otherwise some part of our brains will still be devoted to processing on them at all times. I had that: I had a book idea, I loved it first, but I outgrew the story and I felt so guilty. But I had to admit: This is not who I am anymore, it is not the story I want to tell anymore. I had dragged it too long. And it was the most freeing moment when I finally took down the notes from my walls. My brain was free for new ideas!

Never heard this before but it makes a lot of sense. I had always wanted to learn coding, but never had enough time to fully take it on. I’d start up every year or so and then stop. After a few years I finally decided that it wasn’t for me and that I had to be happy and move on. It’s strange, but a good feeling and that’s been 5 years now.

I’m not even done watching this video and I’m getting so much value out of this. Especially the good versus bad quitting. I feel like this is always been one of those topics that most people can never break down, but the fact that you were able to give actionable advice is so relieving. Also, as much as I think that Seth Godin is a super knowledgeable guy, I can’t seem to get through any of his books for some reason. So this was very clutch.

The idea of the dip being a test or audition is something that has really shifted my mindset. I currently feel like I'm in the dip for my channel as everyday I work super hard to get high quality videos out. I learn a lot each day but because they take a long time to make, my output is not the same as other KZbinrs. However, realising that even though each video comes out once a month that individual video is so much better (at least in my opinion) than the previous one. Whether it's the script, the editing, the title or thumbnail I can see major improvements each time. However, for me the dip is comforting and worrying at the same time as there is no guarantee that one gets out of the dip. Of course the people that do get out of it are the ones who find success but not being able to see the end for a prolonged period of time is very difficult to deal with.

congrats on hitting 100k! the dip is such a game-changing book. love how godin distinguishes between "the dip" (temporary setback that leads to mastery) vs "the cul-de-sac" (dead end that won't improve). btw using ai to analyze youtube trends/data has been super helpful for many creators breaking thru plateaus. jenova ai's youtube search feature is pretty neat for finding pattern in successful videos within your niche - helps validate if you're in a dip vs cul-de-sac situation. learned this from working with some creators those early 2024 frustrations definitely sound like a classic dip moment. awesome that you pushed through! 💪

I'm in the dip since i was freelancing so transitioning to KZbin got me immune to this 'dip'. I started December 2024, got 12k hours of views and 48 subs without asking my family or promoting my Channel, wanted it to be organic. Just don't check the analytics from time to time, so i won't feel discouraged and just keep posting. This dip is true and doesn't just apply on youtube but in all aspects of life. To everyone reading, do not quit and hope we all become successful content creators.

This a great video! And you know what I love the most? After going to grad school and spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on my education (and one year trying to build a corporate career), I suddenly realized I was falling prey to the sunk cost fallacy, as you briefly mentioned in the video. Especially when it comes to educational degrees, SO MANY PEOPLE fall into that fallacy because you spend a lot of time and money to get them. I then decided to completely quit on that plan that was truly making me miserable. After months of doubt, I am now 100% sure it was a good quitting, and I am ready to commit my time to the plans that feel right to me. We are taught to make decisions based solely on rationality and traditional ways of "succeeding in life", but honestly, we should be taught to listen more to our feelings and intuition. That was the greatest lesson I learned after those years spent studying and trying to do something I was not passionate about. My good feelings about an activity/people/project have always guided me in choosing the right path for me. I only run into trouble when I ignore the internal guidance system. Great content. Thanks for sharing!

Adding this book to my book list. It's applicable to literally every facet of life -- health, wealth, career, purpose, relationships, parenting, everything. I've been in a BIG DIPPER OF A DIP for the last 5 years, and the tips and lessons outlined in your video are right on point and what's been keeping me going. Thanks for sharing!! Celebrating all your small and big wins with you! Congrats on 100K subs! 🎉

Books can be so helpful. For example, I was so terrible with money until I read book called the calm within by mind-bloomery. It helped me identify emotional triggers behind my spending and focus on what truly matters. My savings are growing, and I feel so much more secure.

This video is gold! Thank you so much for sharing this book! However, I also feel compelled to add that passion can wax and wane. When you first start doing something, you feel this tremendous drive, but at least for me, that initial spark of madness has turned into something less dramatic over time. It's almost like a long marriage. You can't really wait for inspiration to hit, nor should you quit when you start to feel less frantic about your chosen path. I think passion can change and deepen over the course of your journey. It might become less fiery, but perhaps more secure and committed.

Thanks for this. Really helpful lessons here. I used to spread myself too thin, and I’m working on honing in on what feels sustainable to me. A serious challenge for me has been getting through certain levels of the dip in areas that I felt that I was once deeply passionate about, but have since become disillusioned by. Whether intrinsically or through assessment of how it fits to everything else from the outside looking in.

Wow, I love this video!! I enjoy very much the process of making videos! I love the research, the recording, and the editing. But I love the best is to communicate with my viewers. I have find several friends through my channel, we chat about poetry (that is the majority content of my channel), philosophy, etc. Thank you so much for this video.

So i experienced this with my freelance business I was a social media manager and it definitely was great at first but as time went on it started to take a lot of my time it was 24/7 and it affected my mental health not to mention how difficult clients were to deal with because they expected to make them go viral for minimum pay I decided to give it 6 months give it my all set boundaries and tries to make it work or decide to quit and but at the end i realized for me it's a dead end for me so I quit now I'm a web designer and I'm loving it so far I don't have the same challenges as with smm. Though I think I'm still in the dip but I'm determined to make this work so we will see. It's so important to know when to persevere and when to quit. You convinced me to read this book!! 💙💙

@@takingiteasydaisy glad you reosnated with my comment! Social media is not like before there are updates almost weekly there's a lot of emphasis on video creations and overall more and more competition it needs a whole team not a sole smm.

Great perspective. I totally needed to hear this right now. My wife and I are working our way through all the learning challenges of KZbin to get to the point where people will see what we are looking to share. We have been successful and competitive for decades at this point, and we are humbled by the new challenges. I know it will work, it always has, but it's nice to hear others with the same challenges talk about overcoming them. Thanks again :) I'll add one more to your subscriber count.
