If you go frame by frame at 31:13 (Using the period and comma keys take you frame by frame), you can actually see the teleport happening. That sudden teleportation exploits the fact that you aren't focusing on mario; rather the star and the firebar. The effects are mainly used for the noise, but your eyes are looking at what's ahead and if the star will reach you in time or not

The reason for the cloud hint at the beginning is because you could have triggered the spikeball by jumping (like 1:18) and it would have destroyed the cloud, and after you get the vine you wouldn't be able to go in the pipe.

A few people said something like "Mario disappears for 1 frame right before collecting the star." Technically, Mario collects the star, and then one frame later disappears, and then two frames later reappears. Fantastic setup that pretty much eliminates any chance of anyone noticing that as it happens. Surprised Dave didn't catch it when looking for it though, since it's just as easy to go frame by frame in an editor as it is with the period-comma trick here on KZbin

The NINJUTU I think since you can type つ (tsu) with tu on some key board configurations is supposed to be ninjutsu. It’s like how Yoshi has been written in romaji as Yossy in some games in the Japanese versions. It should be Yosshi but sy apparently also counts for shi し. Romaji just makes Japanese even more confusing if you don’t know much about Japanese.

Explanation for "NINJUTU": Basically, what most of us Westerners are used to with Japanese is some flavor of Hepburn romanization, the guiding principle for which is "give Westerners a decent idea of what the word actually sounds like". But Nihon-Shiki romanization and its successor Kunrei-Shiki are more about "write things as consistent as possible". So the S row of the hiragana table, さしすせそ, is written as "sa-shi-su-se-so" in Hepburn, but "sa-si-su-se-so" in Kunrei-Shiki. たちつてと is "ta-chi-tsu-te-to" or "ta-ti-tu-te-to". Combine a し (shi/si) with a small よ (yo) to modify it and the result, しょ, is romanized as either "sho" or "syo". This is why the popular webnovel site "Shousetsuka ni Narou" uses "syosetu" in its domain name.

2-3 frames after the player acquires the star power from the one on the track, they vanish for 2-3 frames. In fact, the frame the star power activates, you can see a ghost of the player character in the bottom left and bottom right of the screen, half a block off screen on both sides. The frame the player disappears, confetti goes off in the same spots. On the left side of the screen, the only open space is where the checkpoint is, so I think it calculates the player as being in that spot even though that's not where the player is appearing. I think transporting the player into a screen-wrapped blocked off spot must allow the player to return to the previous spot. If the player had been teleported directly to the checkpoint I don't think they would have returned.
