Hey Carl - cannons are jank The base of the cannons is basically their feet. If there’s no ground for their anchor to “stand” on, then they will rotate until their anchor points down, then fall down until they hit ground (or pit). Flying machines end up using pows and (usually) melting ice coins for their setup because when the coin melts, the cannon still thinks the pow is ground. since pows can move, the sideways cannon will push the pow until either the pow falls away from the anchor, or until more sideways “ground” stops it. If that new ground is another cannon facing the opposite direction, the two will continuously be falling to each other at equal force. Since they are both falling and not anchored, this means they can be moved. Aaand that’s why flying machine jank can happen. This is how they’ve worked since SMM1. Nintendo devs needed them to act like ground so they can’t be moved by enemies or Mario, but they had to also be able to fall. Why not just have them fall onto whatever side they face. Easy! Jank :)

Uhhh no, they don't fall sideways haha. Flying machines rely on getting cannons stuck to each other, which is a little complicated to do, since they only normally attach to solid blocks. Once stuck to each other, the cannons all think they're being held up by the other cannons, causing them to stay floating together. Give them all a push, and they'll start moving, since one cannon moves away, pulling the others along, which pushes it futher away again... and so on.
