I’m wondering if the selenic acid may have just oxidized some of the peroxide to oxygen and that caused it to be less effective. There’s also the possibility that selenic acid is a much weaker dehydrating agent than sulfuric acid since the dehydrating ability is what really drives the reaction with many organics.

You can increase the concentration of your hydrogen peroxide by putting it under vacuum in a chamber with drying agents. However it's a very time consuming and wasteful process, and Ex&F Tom noted that it often seemed to decrease the effectiveness of the solution, he hypothesized this is due to the lack of water making aqueous reactions occur more slowly.

Your tooth looks like an acid had already had a try. Thinking about it, how does plaque (or other decay mechanisms) break down teeth? I'd guess bacteria produce acid(s) during respiration, is the dissolved enamel actually used at all?
@anthonyodea2251
@anthonyodea2251 5 ай бұрын
It is possible that the tooth cracked when it was being removed, as opposed to such a significant amount being decayed by bacteria.
@herrbrahms
@herrbrahms 5 ай бұрын
Oral bacteria metabolize sugars and produce lactic acid as a waste product. This wouldn't be so much of a problem since saliva is basic, except the plaque biofilm keeps the acid in contact with the tooth and away from saliva in the absence of frequent brushing and flossing. Fluoride is added to toothpaste because it replaces the weak -OH groups in tooth enamel hydroxyapatite, making fluoroapatite instead.
@beardedchimp
@beardedchimp 5 ай бұрын
@@herrbrahms that is fascinating, thank you for enlightening me. My nephew has cystic fibrosis, researching it several years ago gave me terrified respect for biofilms. In his case they prevent antibiotics from killing pseudomonas, if an infection is detected before the biofilm has matured it can be treated. With CF, fighting a fully colonised biofilm covered lung infection is nearly impossible. I'm wondering what's the function of plaque's biofilm. Obviously it can tolerate basic saliva already, does it act as a lubricant preventing abrasion during eating from scraping the underlying bacteria? I did some googling prior, but honestly succinct comments like yours are far more informative. > it replaces the weak -OH groups in tooth enamel hydroxyapatite, making fluoroapatite instead. So you're saying fluorapatite is in on the global mind control conspiracy? :P
@herrbrahms
@herrbrahms 5 ай бұрын
@@beardedchimp The function of the plaque biofilm is less a lubricant and more an adhesive. It's produced mutualistically to benefit the entire colony. It seems clear this evolved through natural selection; after all, an unadhered bacterium will eventually wash down the gullet of the host and find certain death in the stomach. The fact that lactic acid produces cavities is just a bonus from their perspective, since it creates more nooks and crannies to colonize. The plaque is safer out of the weather, so to speak. I don't know if it was clear earlier, but the hydroxyl groups are susceptible to acid attack while the fluorides are not. But microorganism adhesion to flat surfaces has evolved many times. Consider how lichen can find purchase on smooth exposed granite in tundra environments. Fast forward this process over geological time, and it's one of the ways that rock becomes soil. Don't let your teeth weather away to soil. And it's very unfortunate that we can't just brush our lungs the way we can our teeth.

Can you do one with Hydroiodic acid? I've never seen this acid being used on any channels on KZbin yet, and I read that HI is way more powerful than HCL or all of the Halogen based acids! Thanks
@stefangadshijew1682
@stefangadshijew1682 5 ай бұрын
HI is only more "powerful" as in more acidic in other solvents then water, and probably as a gas. In water, all of the hydrohalogenic acids except HF are completely disassociated. Also, HI tends to be a reducing agent, which might open some chemistry you can't do with the other acids, but makes it more messy and less useful if all you need is a strong acid.
