I agree. That's why I enjoy watching these chemistry channels. I'm not a chemist and can't, and don't, have any desire to get a hold of any of these chemicals, but it's still fascinating to see the reactions. Even if it's just put something in flask, boil something, then distill something.

Unusually aesthetically pleasing reactions for a yellow chemical. Vanadium is such a interesting metal, it's common knowledge how important other metals like Lithium or Nickel are to the modern world but Vanadium isn't as widely appreciated and it's a treat to be able to see it in such rare form here.

How is the vanadium reduction with zinc happening in an aqueous environment? Also, it seems there is a substantial bit of time between when the zinc granule disappears and the vanadium reduction occurs. Where did the electrons go in the meantime?

Normally you would want reduction to get a metallic element. In this case, perhaps some weird rearrangement of oxidation states allows some vanadium to reduce some other vanadium. So many oxidation states that vanadium can have. Or decomposition of a halide?

Why do you use a graham condenser for boiling thionyl chloride under reflux? That is not, what it is best for; a dimroth condenser is often the better choice for systems under reflux. Graham condensers can be blocked by the liquid in such a setup, which can lead to spilling. Otherwise: Great video!

Are you sure that the reaction with c.KOH forms orthovanadate? I understood that the orthovanadate salt is colourless, but the metavanadate salt is BRIGHT yellow/orange.
@experimental_chemistry
@experimental_chemistry Жыл бұрын
It's yellow, because the reaction seems to be incomplete here, the mixture needs to be heated for full conversion. Potassium metavanadate is colourless (de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaliummetavanadat) like all alkali vanadates. Just have a look at my video about making mixed sodium vanadates.
