Chris, you are refreshingly right to say that it's important to find a camera, or system, that you are comfortable with. Don't be pressured into following the herd, whether that be the FF herd, the MFT herd or the iPhone herd. Try them all, find what's best for you. My only regret is that I didn't fillow this advice sooner myself.

Hey Chris, you're definitely preaching to the converted with me. Back in 2018 I dipped my toe into the MFT world after a photography friend who'd shot with Nikon for over 40 years made the move to Panasonic. I'd never considered MFT before and believed everything I'd read, until I saw the results he could get with it. I tried a 2nd hand EM-1 & 12-40 lens and was sold. A year later, after getting back from a trip where I took my Canon gear because I couldn't immediately afford to do a full like for like swap, I moved over to Olympus and haven't looked back. It really did reinvigorate my photography. I also like what you said about finding the system that works for you. I honestly believe there has been no such thing as a bad camera released in the last decade, it's finding the system that suits you and the way you shoot. I did the same thing, went from Canon ff to Olympus and the em1 ii is currently my daily driver. I've been enjoying my photography so much more with the m43 system since I primarily do street, landscape, wildlife and macro but dabble in some light painting as well. The procap feature is an absolute game changer imo. The em1 ii is an incredible camera and what we should expect from high end camera purchases. In the film days if you bought a pro level camera you'd expect to have it for a decade or more, sometimes for life and pass it down to your kids. I'd be happy shooting with this for another 6-8 years or longer since it does far more than what I need it to do. The only weak point in the system is my talent.

I sometimes *need* to get the "full frame look" in certain photoshoots. Instead of investing in a second system, I just grabbed two f/1.2 primes. For everything else, especially anything outdoors, my OM-1 and 2.8 lens set absolutely never fails. In fact, a OM-1 mark ii is currently on its way and I hope to be setting it up today :D

After 12 years with Canon I took the plunge and brought an OM-5 with 14-150mm kit lens. It really brought back the joy in photography. Can't get over how light it is and the features that come easily to hand. Looking forward to getting 45mm and 25mm f1.8 lens .

Ditching FF and going M43 was the best move I ever did. Currently have the EM1.3 and OM1.2. For the things you shoot I see no need to update from the EM1.2, it's a cracking camera. The only thing the OM1 & OM1.2 will give you really is the Live ND and Live GND. You can get those results with filters if you are happy to carry them.

Thank you, Chris, for sharing your love of photography and your realistically positive perspective on the OM-1ii and MFT. The system does for me what no other can: give me great technical performance and flexibility, rugged construction in an ergonomic design, brilliant optics at reasonable prices, and all in a compact package. I especially like the DoF advantage for close-up work. The Laowa 6mm f/2 is such a fine and fun lens, and the Olympus 40-150mm f/2.8 Pro is my most used glass. The 75mm f1.8 is my preference for portraits and events, and I can’t think of a better set-up for moving about in a crowd. It all just works. Keep your videos coming. You inspire me to do more landscape photography.

Great video Chris & hello from Oz, what you say is so true. I've been caught up in the "buy the latest" to get the top results & then eventually realised that at my age (76yrs) the weight & burden of carrying around all my Canon gear (L series lenses etc) was preventing me from getting the enjoyment out of photography that I used to get. Here in Oz Olympus ran promotions for the OM-1 which was about to be superseded by the mkII. I traded all my Canon gear & got the OM-1 + 12-60mm F4 pro, 40-150mm F4 pro & the 75-300mm lens at very reduced prices, now when all of this Olympus gear is in my bag, it all weighs approx the same weight as just one "L" series lens. I'm back to enjoying my photography & take my camera with me every time I go out, the quality of the images has surpassed what I was expecting, I just wish I had made the move a lot earlier. Sorry to ramble on but I felt I had to mention it & hope it helps anybody else in the same situation. Keep up the good work mate. Cheers from Oz

Spot on sir. Users should really try to analyse "specs" and figure out what they really need. MFT gives you so many options, and is so much fun to use in a smaller form factor - the IBIS is better than any other format

I love my Olympus (OMSystem) MFT cameras. I‘ve never had so much fun with my camera gear before. Image quality is great, too, and these cameras are packed with cool features like live composite and image stabilisation that allows me to shoot up to 4 seconds (wide angle) handheld.

I love your videos and how you express your photographic vision and passion for what gear works for you to capture such stunning images. I'm a dedicated OM System/Olympus shooter and still have my E-M1 Mk II even through I also have an OM-1. Just about every negative thing said about MFT on social media is false or greatly exaggerated especially including dynamic range limitations and high ISO noise. I don't know why so many haters want to tear down the MFT system other then to make themselves feel better about paying too much for gear that is too big and too heavy. 🙂 I agree with you about getting what works for you but to do that one needs an open mind to give all the gear a chance. MFT rocks. GH7 is apparently being released or announced tomorrow. With internal RAW video too. I have a 5diii for shallow depth of field when needed. The bonus is EF lenses can be adapted to MFT if needed.

I did adapt a couple of Canon EF L series lenses when I first got my E-M10 Mark ii and it was a fun thing to do, given the size of the lens to the body but if it works… it works.

@@ChrisBaitsonPhoto Yes I don’t adapt the EF lenses very often but I think in the past it has stopped me from buying certain MFT native lenses, because I have told myself I don’t need them because I have EF equivalents when used on a speed booster. Having said that I recently had success at an auction where I spontaneously and opportunistically bit for a bundle of 6 Olympus lenses and won. They are the 12-40mm, 17mm, 25 f1.7, 45mm f1.7, 75mm, and olympus 45-150 f4-5.6 zoom. All for about the equivalent of GBP90 each! I got lucky.

My first new camera in years was an E-M1 mk iii bought during lockdown. Love it. Have other cameras from Sony and Fuji but always return to the Olympus as everything just feels right. Love LiveND, star AF, composite, pre-shot etc. Not to mention the amazing IBIS!

I totally agree, I've a similar set up with a Lumix G9. Weight, price (especially used in good condition) and convenience relative to full frame I take it everywhere and only use my ff DSLR on occasions for landscapes, even the G9 gives pleasing results here 📷👍

Mirrorless cameras are lightweight too - my Sony a6000 and kit lens fit intoa small pocket. At 24mp it produces excellent images - Shame that Sony drop it and that new and used prices consequently were increased by approximately 50%. Will seriously look into M43 though.

Got given a EM10 mark 3 last year and have been loving it, have now ventured into the primes, which have been great, I still like my 7200 but not having the extra gear weight sometimes is very nice indeed.

I've been a massive fan of the m/43 system since I bought my first camera, the Olympus e-m1 mk 1. I think the system is the ideal travel system and brilliant for landscapes. I still have my full frame 5d mark III and a lot of canon lenses and Im happy to shoot the m/43 system along side my Canon system.

My current M43 kit is E-M1 ii, Samyang 7.5mm, Olympus 9-18mm, 12-40mm PRO, 14-150mm and 75-300mm. I mostly take the 9-18mm and the 14-150mm for landscapes unless it's really foul weather and I just take the PRO lens for maximum weather sealing. For fair weather travel, I swap out the E-M1 for an E-M10 iii with the 9-18mm and the 14-150mm. As with others, the small size and light weight are very important to me.

I just didn’t get along with, I had it when it was first released. Alongside the R I just didn’t understand it. It was like a stripped down R with a lot of “for granted” mirrorless tech missing. Granted it was the cheapest full frame mirrorless camera at the time and I understand that side of it. But I don’t know, just never really loved it. That being said a lot of my earlier videos ended up being recorded with it when I was using the Canon gear so it did find its place.

After 30+ years with Nikon (24 being Digital) I moved systems. Got rid of a D3 & D850 with all the lenses to go with OM-1 Mk2. Best move ever. Lighter, great image quality and smaller lenses. 8mm fisheye through to 400mm in MFT format or 16 -800 in FF. Must get down to the Humber it looks amazing. I'm only in Beverley. 🤣

I've been an MFT user for more than 10 years, with various Panasonic and (more recently) Olympus/OMDS cameras. I've owned an E-M1ii in the past and currently own an E-M1 iii and OM-1, and I think the ergonomics all of them are pretty much perfect for my hands. They are really nice cameras to use, with great battery life. As both a stills and video shooter, for me the E-M1iii is worth the extra money over the E-M1 ii for the better video C-AF and adjustable video IBIS, but the stills and video picture quality is basically the same on both as far as I'm concerned. The OM-1 is a major step-up in video quality though, with 10-bit video support and a very fast sensor reducing rolling shutter distortion to almost nothing. I've toyed around many times with buying a full-frame mirrorless camera, but never done it because MFT does all I need (and honestly E-M1 iii and OM-1 are better cameras than I am a photographer...)

The Panasonic 9mm f1.7 is a great prime and super small and I also have a Olympus 7-14 f2.8 and a wide angle Panasonic 8-18mm f2.8-4 are both great wide angle zoom lenses, the Panasonic allows screw on filters which is a plus. But in all my years of digital photography I never let sensor size determine the camera that I purchased I look at the features and usability to make my decision to buy or not buy a camera., 4/3 cameras and glass will always have a place in my photography.

To your point about nighttime photography with M4/3 - I've imaged the milkyway with M4/3 and while my full frame kit does it a little better, my M4/3 gear got the job done. Smaller sensors absolutely can be used to shoot astro.

I’d have to agree. The best astro camera I ever used was actually a Canon 6D. The larger sensor and larger pixels really helped but the Olympus has worked just fine for me - I guess the more modern sensor tech does help.

I bought a lumix GX80 in 2017. The kit lens is surprisingly good , but I love using the Leica Summilux 15mm. 1.7 on it. Giving an equivalent of 30mm, it's wonderful for street. For long exposure night photography however I still use my Canon 6D bought in 2016. Yes it's old, but I love it and the images it gives me.. If I required fast tracking autofocus I'd need something different than the cameras I own. But personally, that's not a requirement. As you said, use what works for you , and what you enjoy using..

I still love my canon ff dslr but I picked up a Fujifilm xt1 and a 27mm prime for a trip where I knew I was going to be doing a lot of walking, and I have enjoyed the pictures that I’ve taken with it so much it makes me embarrassed with how much I spent on lenses and stuff for my canon. Both cameras serve a purpose but whatever gets you out and taking photos is worth it’s weight in gold. You don’t need the most expensive or latest and greatest equipment to go out and have fun! :)

I switched from Canon to Lumix two and a half years ago and I have loved the change. I shoot G9, GH5 II, and GH5s and a mix of Panny, Olympus, Laowa, and Sigma lenses. I love that MFT lenses are so small that I can carry what I need without breaking the back. MFT is simply more versatile, and enjoyable. I love the format, and with the new GH7, it is an exciting system that is thriving.

I flit between Fuji and Olympus as they both bring the analog controls. Panasonic for video and Olympus for photography for me. I like both but Olympus colours do something for me. In-camera focus stacking, ibis, live bulb and composite features are Olympus standouts. Size and weight less so. M43 is getting bigger and APSC is getting smaller so it’s not the advantage it used to be especially using pro lenses. EM10 of any type with 25 and 45mm primes is probably the best bang for anyone’s buck there is!

The ultra wide lens was a Venus Laowa 6mm lens. They’re not cheap but they’re good. Manual focus but electronic aperture control. But shooting that wide even at wider apertures almost everything is in focus.

I switch from Canon to Micro43 over ten years ago, also end ending up with an OM-1 Mk2. It’s a lovely camera and very easy to use. Everything is where it should be and quickly accessible. I’ve now switched, at significantly cost, to a Sony A7CR with both GMaster and Voigtlander lenses. I am now able to take photographs that are completely in achievable on the M43 system. Every Camera has its pro and cons. The RP was Canons Low End entry FF camera, the EM-1 mkii was Olympus's Flagship, they are very different. Actually, size and weight can be very similar with a Full Frame camera, also for them small, light lenses exist. That should not be the primary concern when considering a System. When a blurry background is required, FF has its purpose. However, m43 and especially Olympus has some pretty nice features. I recently bought an EM-1 mki, because it was just 200€ and like 4000 exposures only (I have no idea how people manage this, I shot 10,000 pictures/year), the 25mm 1.8 (looks brand new) was just 130€ extra. Usually I use Fuji and I will also maintain as primary System. However, I like to see what other Systems offer. I wanted something weather sealed with a weather sealed super zoom, as I don't wanna change primes constantly when hiking in the mountains or at a city trip. Paired with the 14-150 ii I'll get this. Things I like with the EM1 mki: -Build Quality. Easily one of the best I've ever had in my hand. Feels like a little tank, tactile feedback of the wheels is superb etc. And weather sealed -customizable buttons. Basically everything can be made fully customized. -IBIS, its pretty good -screen, particular for its age it good (feels better than Sony today) -long software support with feature drops -features like Live. Comp. (I'll keep it just for it. Light painting is so much more convenient with it) And stacked focus. -deep grip Things I dislike with EM1 mki. -Screen settings way better customizable with Fuji (e.g. I can fisplay an digital focus area) -JPEG engine feels dated (in comparison to Fuji) -support for manual lenses (manual setting focal length e.g.) I was surprised, dynamic range and noise could be way worse, but it is okayish and totally usable. The AF is way, way better than expected for such an old camera. It is fast, accurate for slow moving objects and even face/eye recognition works fine, way better than Fujifilm (I have an X-E3). Canon didn't even offered something like that at the same time (when using live mode). Even in ambient light is okayish. However, the lens is a bit off. Yes, it is sharp, but I expect more from a lens (especially from this price point, it costs originally double the amount for the Panasonic 25mm 1.7). Bokeh is okay, Sigma is better in that regard. Nice sunstars are possible. What shocks me are the strong flares it produces against the sun, it is not a sunset lens. I expected better from Olympus, the entry level Fuji XC 35mm f2 is way, way better in that regard and cheaper. And is has pronounced longitudinal CAs. Olympus, I expected more, even for the mid range price. There are entry level lenses that are way better. The Sigma 30mm f1.4 is better in every aspect and just slightly larger and heavier.

I've had mine for a little under a year and can't see me changing it ever .. . so much so I've used it as one of two bodys when I shoot cycle sport and it worked superbly. When the opportunity arises I will sell one of my Canons for another Olympus body and longer lens. Chris my back thanks you .... 😅

I've gone back to m43rds for wildlife photography and it is fantastic (so much lighter when lugging equipment around the countryside). I'm still on the fence about landscape. The misconception about wide angle lenses made me laugh. For two reasons. Firstly, in the past I owned the Oly PRO 7-14/2.8 which was the best UWA zoom I've ever owned. Secondly, I have also owned the Fuji MF system and getting equivalent WA was almost impossible or impossibly expensive.

As much as I value my old Nikon DSLR (D200), a few years ago I got to the point where after a couple of hours I felt like I had a brick strapped around my neck. Just getting old and creaky, I guess. But I still wanted to get good shots with a serious camera and glass, but keep my cost low. Sony and Fuji were just too pricey, even for used. That left me looking at M43. For a bit more than $400 I settled on the original EM5 and started with the Lumix 12-32, a little gem. And I haven't looked back. Picked up a couple more lenses (Lumix 25mm and Oly. 30 macro) and am looking at adding your camera, the EM1 II.

Why was the Canon RP so bad? I thought it's pretty good as a budget way to get into FF. Photos I got from it were very good and dual-pixel AF was quick. Olympus is pure joy though, that's why I switched to them too :)

@@shasankgupta9460 yeah I switched to Olympus EM10 IV. It’s very subjective. I really value ibis, the way it handles, the shutter sound, the small size/weight and the small MFT lenses. It’s just more fun to use imo

@@shasankgupta9460 Sure, and if you value fast autofocus I'd go with higher end cameras like EM5 III, OM5, EM1 etc for phase-detect AF. EM10 only has contrast AF, slower than the Canon RP actually but still good.

Agreed, I started on m43 with my GH5. I wasn’t a photographer when I bought it but I started taking photos with it and haven’t stopped. I decided to invest into the Lumix S5 some years ago and now own an S5iix. I bought the sigma 100-400 to walk around and do landscape and wildlife photography and have found if just too damn big, and that’s a relatively small telephoto. Have since shifted back to my GH5, trusty Leica 100-400 for double the reach, lighter, shaper and just ordered a G9ii as a successor to my GH5. I came to learn the light weight nature of M43 was key to my enjoyment of my photography and can’t imagine what it would be like walking around with a 200-600 or 800mm lens. I still love the images I get out of my S5iix and S5 and that is still my key camera for my job, corporate and wedding work but for personal outdoor work, m43 every day

@@ChrisBaitsonPhoto if you agree you'll admit to be foolish Chris... It may be ok for landscapes, but in general M43 is just way too small and you won't get the lens range as you get for full frame. How many wedding photography is done on M43? Once we have tech to transform f/4 to f/1.2 and enlarge photos you don't need to have dslr or mirrorless at all except for very few things like wildlife or sports.

@@Z_EOS actually.. you will never find M43 sensor in a phone, it's too big, and not only that.. it's just impossible. 1" is actually hardly to be placed, and even phone have problems to use it on one focal length (forget about 1" zoom sensor with 1" quality that comes from the real lens)

@@pentagramyt417 because you don't need m43 sensor in phone. 1" is plenty. All you need is technology to improve. Look at phones and cameras decade ago and today. If ppl today say that they went from FF to m43 that would be enough said when you compare size of the sensor. M43 is 2x crop from FF and 1" is 2.7x crop from FF... 1“ sensor is in Sony RX10 and RX100 BTW and DJI osmo pocket 3

@@Z_EOS There is always difference in colours the bigger the sensor is, and let's not get deep into that. Compare 1" sensor to Medium Format, and there is nothing to talk about. But to the point - untill there will be LENS as additional accesories made by manufacturer (let's say iPhone start doing iPhone lens mount for their lenses), then phones will never be as good as a compact camera, even RX100.

The inexpensive Oly 45mm F1.8 is a superb portrait len,s. The 75mm is the sharpest len,s of any system. (See Tony & Chelsea V,log). Gives the lie M4/3 is not pro standard.

In my opinion the sigma 56 1.4 is even sharper (I also own the 75 1.8 , 45 1.8 and three of the 1.2 pro primes which have really great rendering)
