I grappled with the APSC versus M43 decision for a year, a real left side vs right side brain tussle. I could see the image quality difference, albeit not huge, though the larger sensor pulled ahead at night. Logic said APSC while every tactile sense said M43. I'm simply happier using M43. Thanks for posting.

It was an easier decision for me having a full frame canon set up to use aswell. Based on what and how I shoot, m4/3 and especially the em1 mark ii, won out over Sony. I just wish now I hadn’t fallen for the hype 3 years ago 😂 Thanks for watching 🖖

In the last 50 years I've used several different 35mm cameras, a few MF, one 4x5, some early digicams, Sony full frame and APS-C digital SLRs, and a Sony APS-C mirrorless. Recently I decided to try M43 for many of the reasons you state, but also size/weight, reliable performance, and COST. I don't shoot video but wanted a pro level body. I settled on a used EM-1 Mark I, used 14-150mm (the newer weather sealed version), and for a low light "normal lens" a used Panasonic 20mm 1.7. For under $500 total I got a great, light weight (2 lbs total) walk around setup. So far, I'm VERY happy with the setup and am now eyeing a few "specialty" lenses for unique situations.

What’s super cool about this video is your enthusiasm! I found your videos searching Sony a6000 stuff, and followed for a while. The best part for me is just how great the photos are on the new micro 4/3 system. Although I’m sure the camera is awesome and helping massively. I think getting the passion back has instigated these amazing photos! I also should have bought an Olympus years ago! Awesome work pal.

To be honest, I have the A6500 has 4K , IBIS, fast AF, but I also have the EM1- Mark III the IBIS on the Olympus blows any camera out of the water. Alot people do not realize how important IBIS is not only in video, but for shots. Especially for low light and telephotos of wild life. You can hold the shot longer and have no issues in missing the shot, cannot say the same for the Sony A6500. Olympus has also better colors than Sony.

I got the EM10 Mk 4 as my first camera and recently purchased 45mm 1.8mm lens as I wanted a slight upgrade from my 12-42mm my kit kens. For my first camera it's really nice and I'm getting some nice feed back from my shots. For it's price it really packs a lot I think, plus it's small and light for travel. I am also using a 40-150mm lens which is good for a cheap beginners lens. Not sure when the day will come to upgrade my camera, for now I am having fun with the one I have

I use a Lumix G9, (haven't upgraded to the G9 II yet) and I use it for all my event photography. The lenses are cheap and after carrying it around for hours walking around at an event it's not weighing me down like the FF cameras were. Honestly, it's more convenient to not have to lug around a giant zoom lens and it's also nice to be able to slip in and out of different situations unnoticed. I photographed an entire wedding once the entire procession barely even noticed me. It was a long wedding too and I took well over 2,000 photos. My flash died on me during one event and the event was at night, but that didn't stop that tiny powerhouse. Yeah, I had to denoise the images in lightroom but the client loved the cinematic feel with the really dark shadows and highlights from the available light. I photographed a concert once for a client who was playing on stage and I didn't use a flash the first time, only the stage lighting and the pictures looked amazing. There was a guy there taking pictures for the newspaper next to me and he kept holding up his giant Cannon camera with his giant lens and snubbing his nose at my equipment but by the end of the night he was wanting to know more about it after I showed him the pictures and how light weight the camera is. So yes, MFT is a GREAT platform to use IF you know how to use it. It's not as easy to use as the FF cameras I used to use for various reasons but it's waaaaay more fun to shoot with and the colors are so vibrant! The only downside that I can think of is that you don't get the FF bokeh but honestly, the bokeh you get is more than enough. Seriously though... lightroom AI takes care of the noise and they recently updated for lens blur. If they keep this up there's not really going to be any reason to have a FF camera......

Thanx for your emotional experience! I am in the same boat. Started with an E-620 and upgraded to the E-M1 Mark 1. Then I was caught by the Sony hype and with a bleeding heart I sold my silver EM-1. But as good as the image quality was, it was too heavy all the time and I had some final hopes for the upcoming a7Cii. But the leaked price of about 2800€ gave me the final kick to return to my beloved MFT.

I find it interesting the number of expensive Sony A7 models on the second hand market all the time over the last couple of years. Olympus OM-D E-M1 series have everything I need for outdoors and fishing photography - Pro lenses on my E-M1 Mike is a killer combo - shoots 20MP RAW at 60fps, better splash proof body than Sony has ever made, and has stood up to hours in the rain, sand and saltwater splashes when fishing (and fish-slime - have to wash camera or it smells!)

A smaller camera with good in-body stabilization is easy to carry, and allows sharp hand-held shots with far longer shutter speeds, for low light conditions. For me, the OM-5 and the Olympus Pen E-P5 both work well. Both are Micro Four Thirds cameras, with many small lenses available, including various primes at f1.7 -- f2.5 for evening/night scenes. The OM-5 is 2.6 ounces heavier than the E-P5, and small but less pocketable. It has several more advanced features, but the E-P5 offers the special color and monochrome modes of the legendary Pen F. Both cameras have the same fantastic dial arrangements, to flexibly adjust the camera without menu-diving. Both have excellent image stabilization, but the OM-5 can handle darker night shots than the E-P5. The E-P5 also has a flash, but for beautiful photos light shouldn't come from the front only. Still, the flash helps for casual shots at night. (Panasonic also has a couple smallish M4/3 bodies with stabilization, but I'm not familiar with them. And some of their lenses are stabilized.) I got both of these on eBay, one new, and one used in fantastic condition for great prices, from stellar Japanese shops that offer very fast shipping to North America. No tarrifs for shipments to the U.S. Sticking with vendors at 98% or more 5-star feedback is very safe. MapCamera is my favorite for quality and responsive customer service, but I've shopped happily from others as well. Longer shutter speeds can't capture fast action in low light. For that, much larger cameras and lenses are needed, from full-frame cameras. About 1/3 of my photos are in low light. I carry one of these cameras much of the time. I use full frame cameras too, old-classics, and they are better than M4/3 cameras in dynamic range, in low light. My M4/3 cameras can achieve this through HDR bracketing, however.

I made an error, I meant the E-P7, not the E-p5. ... Also, some older older Olympus cameras, including the EM-10 series might perform well in what I wrote above, at lower prices used. (Not including the E-P7's amazing color calibrations/settings.)

I can't tell you how refreshing it is to hear someone eschew Sony, to buck the trend, to overcome all the marketing millions they spend to the detriment of photography. When Sony started out their stated aim was to become one of the top three camera manufacturers, eventually supplanting Nikon and Canon. It was telling that they didn't express an intention to make the very best camera possible, only that they should supplant their rivals by shifting the most boxes. They have just about succeeded, and all credit to their business acumen and marketing. Have they built a consummate camera though, something that feels like it has a photographic soul or pedigree? Or have they built a powerful computer that happens to also capture images? In many ways I wish Sony had confined themselves to making very good sensors, and leaving the designing of cameras to those that have a long provenance in the craft. Photography has always attracted anoraks, and Sony has provided them with their ultimate wet dream and the spec sheet with which to clean themselves up. The Borg are credited with saying 'Resistance is futile,' but having watched your video there is hope that not everyone will be assimilated by the tyranny of numbers. Thank you.

I've made the same comparison a couple times, most recently after discovering that used Sony A9s are kind of underpriced. I'd have to spend a lot more on lenses to come anywhere near parity in capabilities, and the E-M1 II would still have much better IBIS. All I'd gain is a stop of high-ISO noise performance and better tracking autofocus.

Hi David, It's not just the cameras that are better value, the whole MFT system has been around since 2008, so there are lots of good value secondhand lenses around as well. Then when you buy into a camera manufacturer that offers both APS-C and FF, suddenly you realise all the development of PRO grade glass is heading towards the FF range and the prices are out of reach. I reckon I've saved myself between £20,000 - £30,000 by buying MFT secondhand compared to getting into another system where they have been late to mirrorless and there is barely a range of new native lenses let alone a secondhand market. I don't even have a massive set up the savings per lens are that large. Anyone priced up a 90mm F1.8 lens for FF when the MFT equivalent costs less that £150.
@DavidFlowerOfficial
@DavidFlowerOfficial Жыл бұрын
Yes, exactly. And it’s pretty much the same story with Canon. Not a whole lot in the way of pro grade lenses for apsc there either. M4/3 is an amazing system for me and I’m looking forward to building out my lens collection for it🖖

As an amateur photographer, my use of Olympus gear goes back to the four thirds system (E-520). Then I made the switch to the micro 4/3 system, and I eventually bought a M10. The M10 was the first camera I truly loved due to its size, ergonomics, controls and image quality. I replaced it with the M10 Mark ii which I still use along with my M1 Mark ii. By purchasing used gear, the micro four thirds system has allowed me to acquire a variety of lenses including some of the fantastic inexpensive prime lenses and two pro level zoom lenses (f/2.8 12-40 and 40-150). The system meets my needs and when I've looked at other options such as full frame systems, I'd have to invest a lot of cash that just wouldn't be worth it for the few times I'd benefit from a full frame system. At this point, I just need to work on my skills and spend time doing what I love to do. I maintain that for amateur photographers looking to have some quality cameras and lenses, the micro four thirds system offers the biggest bang for the buck if you shop for used or reconditioned gear. And for the overwhelming majority of photographers, the system offers more features and capabilities than most of us use on a regular basis.

Thanks for sharing....there has been an interesting trend going on in MFT photography community. It seems despite obvious disappointment of the Olympus latest products there actually has been a surge of MFT users in recent days. There has been pros like you downsizing from Canon, Sony and Nikon as well as GenZ had enough of their obvious incompetent CCDs and entered the good looking yet practical Olympus Pen and Lumix GF. The world is kind of crazy, but against all odds, MFT is making a come back in 2024 when the wheel of fortune spins back in its favor😂

Interesting observations David, I started my mft experience with an EM10 MK2 as well, around 6 years ago and it's a great camera but I'm left with mixed feelings as reliability let's it down. The 14 - 42 pancake lens failed twice in less than 5 years followed by the screen. I now have a MK3 with a manual 14 - 42 lens to mitigate any further failure . However ,it's the only camera that has ever let me down. Perhaps an upgrade to an EM 1 might be in order as I believe their better grade cameras or more reliable,by all accounts.

Awesome. Great to see some love for M43. The only camera I regretted selling was the Panasonic gx80 which I foolishly “upgraded” to an a6300. I got an rx100v to compliment it. It was great but terrible build quality and Sony customer support was atrocious. Sold both and haven’t missed them one bit. I ended up being very fortunate to get a great price on a Leica m8 a few years ago (they are now on average double what I paid) and still use it a lot. Size and form factor are important to me no full frame mirrorless system now can touch M43. I recently bought a second hand gx80 again and some of my fave pictures I’ve taken with it. It has some of the same shortcomings you mentioned that you ditched the Sony system for but as a small secondary camera to put in your coat pocket it’s phenomenal and the 12-32 kit lens is extremely underrated. Would love to see your thoughts on this if you fancy trying one and can pick it up cheap. Sorry for rambling on. Great video and beautiful photos.

I’ve used a lot of cameras in my time as a photographer and I genuinely feel like the Olympus cameras and m4/3 in general offer the best balance in terms of quality, features, usability and cost. The Sony cameras were all great in their own way, but none of them really hit the mark as an all rounder. The Em1 mk ii absolutely does, at least for my use. No need to apologise for rambling on, it’s amazing to see a community who are genuinely excited by their cameras and I’m happy to now be part of it. Thanks for watching, Paul🖖

@@DavidFlowerOfficial I think the push to full frame has caused many photographers and enthusiasts alike to see anything smaller as a lot less which just isn’t the case. The IBIS in m43 helps big time with low light and I tend to prefer having some depth of field anyways rather than being a bokeh hunter. A benefit for myself is that I just really like the 4:3 aspect ratio and often crop to this anyway. Size to performance is simply unmatched today IMO. Tempted to pick up an EM1ii for a safari trip we are planning hopefully next year - and they will be even cheaper then

@@paulanderson24 I was saying the exact same thing a few days ago about cropping 4:3. I found myself doing it a lot and now I don’t have to. For my work for years I had a Nikon D800 which is probably the best photo camera I’ve owned and I’ll probably buy one again at some point, but it stopped at that, it was pretty much garbage in terms of features that are in abundance in the Olympus cameras. I still have a FF Canon setup for niche stuff that calls for it, but for 95% of what I do, the videos included, the Em1 is more than enough. I was happy when I got my G85. it has everything I need and more. I have since added the gx85, em5ii, and em1ii to my stable. I'm so happy with all of them and the affordable price for the m43 body and lenses, new or used is a huge plus. Thanks for sharing! Funny, I'm a bit of a Sony fanboy for whatever reason (walkman daya 80s lol) and was looking to jump in....and this would be my first kit and attempt at serious photography. I really really really really really wanted to jump in with the Sony APSC but the more I looked at them and the more research I did, every model seemed almost, have everything but not enough in the end: the a5000 no tiltng screen, no touch screen, no EVF and the deal breaker was it was all plastic, and then the a6000 no weatherproofing, no microphone input etc, then a6100 still didn't seem much of an upgrade from the others and still missing some key features. I think the only model that had comparable specs and completed What I considered essential, was the a6500 maybe? And then we're moving into a thousand or more dollars lol. And all this time I'm sort of dithering around the Olympus I see used that I read about which are being sold for dirt, cheap and have amazing specs actually even way more than I would even ask for. And for $300 of full kit. Anyways, I went for the original OMD E1 Mark 1 and I absolutely love it. I love the feel of it. I love holding it. I love using it. I love every feature. Couldn't be happier Where have you been amy life Olympus (actually, many years ago I used to have one of their point and shoots which I also loved. It had a slide thingy that hit the screen away). I've been wrestling with potentially upgrading from my canon DSLRs ( still and photos); the out-of-camera colors and friendly user interface are difficult to match for an enthusiast like me who prefers non-complicated things so I can enjoy my hobby.... My questions: Your thoughts on the menu system on the EM-1, Mark II (may be an unfair question after coming from Sony the menu system)? Also, can decent photos and video be accomplished without the necessity of color grading or is it required to use the footage? Thanks and keep enjoying the decision you made. Peace.
@DavidFlowerOfficial
@DavidFlowerOfficial Жыл бұрын
Ok regarding the menus. I’ve found the best way to approach any system like Sony or Olympus with very extensive menus is to fully utilise the quick access features. On Sony you can configure the FN menu with the things you use the most and Olympus is pretty much the same with that menu system. For myself, with both systems it’s been a one time setup and then use the quick menus. The EM1 mark ii makes things a little easier still having dials or dedicated buttons for many of the functions. Regarding colours, I always shoot raw to get the best I can for stills and for video on the Olympus I’ve been using the flat picture profile rather than OM log400 just so it’s a faster process in post. Hope this helps and thanks for watching 🖖

I really dislike the battery life on my a6300 it has killed any creativity I had photography wise, camera eats away at the battery even when the camera is powered off. I legit have to remember to charge batteries days before I even want to go out and shoot. my old canon 7d would last weeks on standbye and I could always count on it if I got a itch to go out and shoot. I am going back to canon after this but currently saving up, I miss having that canon color science, weather sealing and amazing battery life.

MFT have always been well suited to video and Panasonic led the way there. Why would you need a sensor so much bigger than the resolution needed for C4K? The new 20Mp can encompass to 6K (burst), with less noise and more DR. Video is usually shot all manual so the EV doesn't change during a clip, but it can run maybe two stops slower than you might use for stills (it depends how you edit). Your E-M10ii is sibling to my E-PL7 and they both borrowed bits from the E-M5ii. I got the E-M5ii and tried using it as B-cam to the GH4 and found it could not shoot movie, it can shoot video clips until the footage tinges magenta (small print in the manual and an issue common to all Ollies of that period). Pana use a heat sink, so I had to get their G7 for the job. I still have the E-M5ii. (& E-PL7, G5, GX7, G7, GH4, PEN-F, G9) For stills I do prefer the tilt screen for waist level but for video we do want the flip. The PEN-F should have had a tilt, it is not suited to video. Ollie IBIS is good, no doubt about that, and I prefer their haptics, but if you want run and gun video, it is the latest Pana because although Movie-IS is different to stills on both breeds, the Dual-IS operates on all Lumix Power-OIS lenses not just the IS-Pro lenses for Synch-IS. Waving the G9 about is like it's on a steady-cam. And no, Ollie don't use the PDAF in all focus modes, Pana have DFD which is not just CDAF. If I wanted to replace the E-PL7 (which I don't) it would probably be the last metal-bodied E-M10iii, not the new plastic one.

I can't imagine using a larger-format camera as I've gotten spoiled with the ability to easily carry 16-800mm of FL in a tiny sling bag (I see that Laowa has a 6mm so I may extend that range even further!). I have a couple of Oly cameras, but prefer Lumix ergonomics. They both make great gear so it's just a matter of personal preference. I went a similar round just with a detour for Canon. Sony 6000 (good AF, but $**t ergonomics and not a lot of cheap lenses), Canon M50 (good AF, but again, just one dial and bad ergonomics). The mistake detour for me was 7D2, as my lens (18-400mm) didn't keep up with the AF in terms of delivering sharp photos. So what I could shoot swallows I'm flight, if they were soft and better glass was pricey AND heavy!!! I bought an EM1 mk1 (and an EPM2 as pocket body) and with 4 lenses covering 28-600mm FF FoV including the super crisp 60mm macro! I'm still below the price of JUST the EF 70-200mm L IS II lens! That's just bonkers! I might only switch to mk II for better AF and ProCapture and happy days!

I think that one of the things a lot of people don’t talk about is that a lot of cameras perform pretty comparably up to about 1600 iso, I think once you go beyond that you have far fewer options. I had the A7s mk 1 and I didn’t notice it being that good with regards iso performance until it got beyond 6400 which is where it started to shine and that continued up to around 40k iso after which it became pretty nasty😂 For the best low light performance I’d say have a look for a more modern camera system that has a suitable lens for your needs and go from there. It’s difficult to name a specific camera or system because the levels of noise that are acceptable differ from person to person. I regularly use Micro four thirds at night with fast lenses and have no issues with the noise levels. Thanks for watching and apologies I couldn’t be more specific🖖

Blimey.... I just spent a few pennies on an E-M10 III with a couple of lenses - I never even considered looking at an E-M1 (because Pro has always been out of my price range)... but good grief, they can be bought for nuppence ha'penny these days! I reckon I'll be getting one next month, when the bank balance gets refreshed! I used to have a load of Nikon gear (D90 + several lenses), and it was fabulous - but BIG and HEAVY. Since Micro 4/3rds stuff is so much smaller, I'm really looking forward to actually using it... as opposed to looking at the Nikon & thinking "nah, I'll use the smartphone today".

Ah my bad, I didn’t noticed you missed the number in your comment and assumed em1. The em10 and em10 mark ii are remarkably similar with the main differences on paper being 5axis ibis on the mkii vs 3 axis on the mki , a higher resolution evf and uhs-ii card support. Hmmm, I’ve been debating going somewhat the other way, but hard to give up the great ibis (it actually works on Oly and Panasonic ) Olympus AF pretty effective too, albeit slightly less than Sony. Pretty much does everything well! Still Sony does make some great cameras…A7C with small lenses would be nice. The Sony ZV E10 with a decent lens will pretty much produce studio work equal to cameras thousands more. If all you do is talking head videos likely the best value new. Perhaps an Oly or Pan if doing more run and gun stuff and want to stay small and light….and a lot of photos too and enjoy it at the same time!

There hasn’t really been a bad camera made in the last decade, maybe longer, but it depends on how you want to use it. I’ve not used the Nikon d3100, but I’ve used the d3200 and owned both the d3000 and d3300. The ccd sensor in the 3000 is great and the d3300 is pretty good all round. As for the lumix gf2, it’s a great camera for stills and ok for video in a pinch. @@DavidFlowerOfficial I have the 30 Lumix, 45 Pana-Leica, and the 60 Olympus, and 90 Olympus on order. The 45 I like least, and the 30 is best used as a close focus normal lens. The 60 is my favorite of the 3. AF is better on the 30, but 60 is a better macro length. Beautifully sharp (reminds me of the 55mm f1.8 Sony) but can struggle with AF at macro distances in lower contrast shady places where small things are often found. Gerald Undone's MFT macro comparison is exactly like my experience. I am expecting the 90 to be more like the 30 in terms of macro AF. The 60 is a great all round lens, a bit quirky, but makes fabulous images, and I love its small size. A lotta bang for buck. The 90 will be a lotta buck for bang, unfortunately.
