Nice addition to I do cars! Pair up for a fun video. He does not know heavy, and is a comical guy, but I do believe he has skill for tear downs and if he wants, will pay more attention to an engine that is worth salvaging. Will watch your videos also. PS: Agree Eric uses breaker bar in less then best practices. Especially when pulling down on #1 cylinder against engine stand, but we all learn and also like learning and video are a great transfer of good information. Keep posting!

Thanks for Eric's step by step teardown, and the "Cat" mechanic's commentary . I knew there was a 3116 and 3126, but thought the main difference was the fuel system . And now have a better appreciation of the 3126 .

On the Navistar / Powerstroke engines, when the copper washer fails at the bottom of the injector, or the injector cup fails -- the bottom of the injector scars just like that #4 did. It will also take out the fuel injector o-ring if it runs long enough that way because of combustion gases getting in. Just went through a 7.3 that had the exact same situation. The crush-washer didn't seat properly.

Nice to get a pat on the back from another mechanic, you deserve it. I’ve rebuilt a few diesel engines and I’m an electrician not a mechanic. A 4 cylinder Ford, 270 Cummins and a Cummins in my W18 case loader. The 270 Cummins had 2.4 million km on it. The valve train was warn so bad that the head of the valve went inside the hole in the head and the keepers fell out. I found it with the valve stem driven through the head of the piston. Yes if I could find my pictures of it it would be a good destruction of the week. Thanks for sharing.

With all due respect to Josh and Eric this was a very entertaining video and funny. As I watched Eric’s originals in the back of my head I was thinking “I wonder what Josh would say about that”, and here it is. Every grin on Josh’s face as Eric did something sketchy or had to learn the hard way what Eric lives with everyday was priceless. It is like every time we get a rookie fire fighter and he tries to brute force something. We laugh, watch them struggle for a while, then give them the right tool so they can work smarter not harder. Great videos from both of you. I’d love to see another!

I like Eric's tear downs, he has some amazing engine destruction videos. Myself being an auto engine builder have dabbled in a couple diesel builds recently with a Cummins 12v and currently building a Mitsubishi 4M40. I would consider both 'light duty' compared to the world of Cat engines. Anyways glad to see both worlds collide in these 2 videos as I enjoy both channels and find you both to be entertaining and interesting to watch. Cheers!

When I watch most of Eric’s videos the unnecessary complication and use of aluminum in modern car engines frankly scares the heck out of me. This cat looks to be built right, nice and heavy. That camshaft bearing surfaces were awesome. This was refreshing.

It is a great feeling to see a highly respected mechanic talk about how frustrating some of these mounting bolts can be to access and remove. I have a 3126 in my 2001 Bluebird All American Bus conversion. It’s an FE. All the general maintenance is pretty accessible from the doghouse and underneath but I’m guessing you’d have to take the front off and jack it up to remove the engine for any serious rebuild work. Thanks for the videos. Really helps me to understand my equipment!

They do make brackets to mount diesel inline sixes on a normal engine stand sideways... The bracket, I think, uses the motor mount location to bolt it on sideways... That fixes the length issue... But he did say in the video that his stand was rated for 1500lbs and it seemed to do just fine mounted lengthwise... Thanks for sharing and keep up your awesomeness...

I just had a head gasket replaced on my isx and asked the shop to call me once they got the cam exposed and for 877,000 miles and being the first time any internal part of the motor has seen daylight except for a valve adjustment my cam looked just as good if not better than that cam it looked brand new even the tech couldn't believe it and it's thanks to you Mr. Ape and other channels that helped me understand a motor better to better take care of it

It took me by surprise myself when I I took apart my first 15 liter (cummins x15 fyi) just how massive these parts are compared to even light duty diesel. Also the 2 piece piston thing is definitely not used in any light diesel I've ever had apart. Surprised actually that the x15 I'm working on uses an all steel piston. Where as the 8.9 liter cummins I did before this was the 2 piece. cool stuff to work on though. Sick mustache BTW!

Just goes to show watching a professional work especially when they give comments on the repair they are doing you can learn some things may not be the same as going to school on a specific engine but enough to give insight ! Josh at Adept is one I like to watch also not that I own any CAT motors but I do have a diesel pickup 02 Dodge Ram with the 5.9 Cummins so I find watching Josh interesting ! I enjoy your vids as well as Erics. I'm retired but I have worked on a lot of older Cat engines and transmissions from loaders and dozers and a few oddballs occasionally but that was back in the 80's. The biggest horror story was a 555 240 cummins that a machine shop destroyed the block by grinding the main caps and align honing the main bores?!? That alone raised the crank enough to case crack the gears and you could not install the side bolts for the mains! It took 3 months to get a new block from England and I had to build it from there. The book shows oversize OD as well as undersize bearings for the mains. I think they took the shop to court to pay for all the parts which was a shame but any mach shop should know that you do not cut the caps on a t-bolt engine with gear drive in the front. I figured that out a long time ago and the parts catalogue confirmed it.

It is funny when you used to working on heavy equipment and then you work on a car. I rebuilt my daughter’s Mini Cooper engine a couple years ago and between the Valvetronic on the intake and Vanos on intake and exhaust I have never seen so many bits and bops in a cylinder head.

I dont know a whole lot about engines or diesels like this for that matter but I really am appreciating the way this engine was designed. Looks like it was built for work and to be worked on. The same can't be said about a lot of car engines out there. Also the general lack of wear on some of these parts is beautiful

I had a 3406E that kept loosening or breaking the left side rear engine mount bolts. Replaced once and the second time the threads were so worn the bolts wouldn't tighten, so they redrilled and threaded the holes for larger bolts and no more problems.

The injector seat was damaged by overheat which caused the cup to fail. Common in the 3126e in equipment side of Cat, compression gas into to dry area between fuel and compression metal to metal taper. Usually find this by fuel into cooling and compression in fuel return and running horrible

I've never seen an engine stand with the adjustable feet on it before, I kinda like that. The biggest engines we see are something like a 4.2 Jaguar out of the old E types, that'd work real nice.

I truly and regularly watch both of the channels and was hoping I would be able to see a "critique" video on the tear down when I began watching the original video and chuckling at the mental cringe when he referred to something comparing with Cummins. I would thoroughly enjoy watching the two of you teardown a c15 or something akin to it... nit just for the teardown but the repair with the two of you. I had my injectors on the 7.3 discolor like that. Previous owner didn't swap the copper crush washer out and it caused combustion gasses to leak and mess up the injectors and injector cups.

So question since I've watched Eric's video on this. What is the difference between the cat injector, and the international injector for the hughy system. I'm sure the tip has different ports or holes ( since international limited Ford with the injectors) or the amount of oil used in the system but it looks like you could interchange them between the cat, dt466 or the 7.3 international. They also have a V6 that came in box trucks like the 7.3, I believe it was a 4.5 but unsure at the moment

So my 1st engine build was a 7.3 powerstroke with the heui system. When I installed the injectors the #1 injector I had accidentally swapped bolts. Causing the injector to lift up allowing combustion gasses to burn the injector and cause that bottom oring to harden and then crack. Once I discovered this I replaced the injector cup, slapped some new orings on the injector after cleaning and she is still running.
