I Do Not Recommend Doing This But It's Worth A Try - Project Re-Vert Is Moving Forward: A/C Instal

During a routine oil change on this 1992 Foxbody Mustang GT convertible with a freshly rebuilt engine, I found an alarming amount of metal in the oil pan. The owner of this car paid a lot of money to have his fox restored to an above average level by another shop, but what he received is absolutely beyond belief. On this episode, I take you through the thought process of how we decided to move forward with the project and we instal all of the new air conditioning components on this 1992 Ford Mustang GT.

I feel for you and the owner! Seeing that sludge dripping from the pan is the stuff nightmares are made of. It’s a shame with all the work you’ve done that you’d find that, ugh. I heard you mention that the car belongs to a retired NHLer whose son was just drafted. I have a really good idea who this might be. Super great guy who doesn’t deserve this fate. Happened to meet him up there in your city and he was polite and made a few minutes of conversation with me. Hope it all turns out well in the end for him and you. Look forward to your next vid! That last shop seems to have taken advantage. They took his money and didn’t give him the new engine. Ive seen it happen before. Always ask to see your parts and take pics before you drop off your car.

Sorry about the guys metal mud, what a horrible thing to find on a brand new motor. Especially as I'm preparing to drop in my new motor. LOL I know you already know EVERY project is full of surprises!! That's what makes em fun, exciting, AND EXPENSIVE! Every bolt or part you touch leads to a new "adventure" it seems. Very unique and tricky spot, feel for the owner and his decision flush the motor, go with it, like you being a mechanic for most of my life, we are wired to fix things, not to ignore known problems that we see. I truly get the owner wanting not to pay for another motor. Plus don't under stand the reasoning for the very large racing type oil pan for maybe just a slightly more than a stock bottom end, don't get that part.

😮But if something goes wrong with all those parts that could have been reused in the motor could end up getting damaged.. probably refresh the bearings and rings.. could be a ring not properly gapped I don't know he can turn this into something with a lot more money to fix it instead of just a simple refresh. He's already in it this deep.

I would be worried about pickup screen being plugged. i would drop pan and inspect.i bet they didn't clearance any bearings,rings ect good luck hope it runs

I think for the owner (dad) it's gonna be good either way, if it runs for 50,000km hell be happy with it, if it blows up the first run down the highway, his kid will probably buy him a fancy new crate motor as part of his celebration of success. Don't feel too bad, your doing great work with what you have to work with.

Couple of quick oil and filter changes to cleaner up and see what happens 🤷 Like you said keep an eye on the oil pressure, if it runs it runs. The other shop that did the last rebuild should be held accountable for that "rebuild"

Years ago I was in a fair hury gettin the backup motor together for my drag car and took it for granted my long time machinist had cleaned the block throughout after all the machine work. I was wrong and the oil came out exactly like that. Maybe if ya clean stuff out best ya can thats all it is and hasnt done no real serious damage.Good luck

Don’t know if it matters,on the pressure switch there is a 134 and a R12.I just did my 88.Had to replace the the harness also.The condenser also will have to be replaced,the old one works better with R12 system.They but all that money in it already.

Hey brother what about taking the pan off and dropping one or two bearing caps to have a look at the bottom end? That way you at least know what kind of shape the bottom end is in. Just an idea but maybe more work and money than it’s worth.

This was what I was thinking as well. Since the oil is already out of it, drop the pan and actually check the bearings. It's entirely possible that if the previous shop did rebuild it, they maybe didn't entirely clean the oil pan and left a bunch of junk in it.

Hey buddy. Dropping the pan is pretty involved as well - either unbolt the trans and lift the motor or drop the K-Member…. Either way, it’s a bunch more hours. We’re going to try firing it and checking the oil pressure as that should give a pretty good indication (with minimal input) to see what we might find if we dropped the pan. Cause whole knows, maybe the mains bearings are fine and it’s the cam bearings that are gone…? 🤷‍♂️
