I love the Magnus Carlsen quote at the top about Bobby Fischer making chess look easy, because every time I see a game by Bobby Fischer, it feels like everything he does is so simple and makes so much sense that I would be able to make exactly the same moves if I was in his place. The most brilliant chess moves are the ones that seem so obvious that you don't know why you didn't think of them yourself. But of course, I don't think of them, because I'm not Bobby Fischer.

Qc8+ would be a blunder.Rf8 and later Kh8 and Rf6 is a fortress. But white could win with Qe6 instead! Rf7 and Kxg4 Kf8 Qc8+ and black has to go out of the fortress. white will win the g7 pawn at some point and Q against R wins.

Very instructive! It shows how the GMs force the final drop of struggle out. There were many opportunities for a blunder to end in draw to the last minute. The old adage applies: "There is nothing more difficult than to win a won game."

The few videos I've watched of Carlsen leave me with the impression that he is just playing to get to the endgame. He always seems willing to exchange pieces and seems as if he just wants to eliminate as many pieces as possible (his and his opponent's) to clear the board to get to the wide open endgame. Granted I've only watched a few of his matches and am fairly new to chess but, compared to other GMs I've watched, Carlsen 's middle game is not as impressive as I'd expect from such a gifted player. Most GM's seem to have extremely deliberate and practiced tactics in their middle game like they're goal is to systemically dismantle their opponent and, in essence, achieve the victory during the middle game. Carlsen on the other hand seems to approach the middle game as merely an obstacle he has to get past in order to get to where he truly flourishes: an open endgame. In a nutshell, it seems Carlsen has great confidence (for good reason obviously) that his superior intellect will win him the match in an open endgame and all he has to do is make sure he doesn't enter the endgame with a significant disadvantage. His incredible natural talent and ability to assert his dominance over his opponents only really become obvious during the endgame (to me at least). Just an observation from the ~dozen or so matches I've seen him play.

Carlsen has another style as Kasporov said it is to strangle you in a slow death. It is also the safe way and why take the chance when he sees the win in a slow strangle. Many try to dismantle their opponents to find out they missed something, but Carlsen is the very best at the end game and he knows this so he he uses his greatest strength to defeat his opponents.

And to add to what I said, Carlsen's slogan is similar to the raiders (although raiders hardly ever win lol) "just win baby."

That Rf8 is possible at 16:12 is mentioned a lot in the comments, but there is another mistake in the video: At 14:57 the position after Qe4 g6 is still a fortress and hence a draw! So I think the evaluation "after c6 Lxc6, you would still be winning" at 13:52 is just wrong and immediately playing c6 leads to a draw. Qe6 was actually necessary to have the winning idea with Qg6+ and Qe6+ (or Qc8+ if Kh8 after Qg6+).

At 17:22 Rook takes queen then pawn takes rook. Expected move would be to put your king on g8 but Carlsen would simply move his king d6, next would be Kf8 for Vladimir to try stopping promotion but then Carlsen would basically just cement his king on d7 to protect the e8 square for promotion and there's nothing black can do. His g7 pawn's useless and his king wasn't fast enough in guarding the e8 square hence that queen move Carlsen made was good.

Qc8+ is a blunder, you have to play Qe6 instead and then pick up the pawn with the king. After Kf8, Qc8+ the King has to go e7 and Qg8 wins the game immediately

#suggestion Hello Agadmator. You're doing a very nice job , showing and analysing these hard to analyse games for us. I want you to analyse kramnik vs kasparov 2000 world championship match game 1 and another game in 2001 at astana where kramnik empolyed the berlin but kasparov somehow managed to win the game. Please tell how kasparov was able to crack kramnik's berlin in the 2nd game.

The position at 15:00 is still a draw after black defends the rook with g7-g6. The reason is that the white king can never touch the g6 pawn, so in order for white til win, the queen has to capture it. But before white can do that, black can put his king on h8, and after Qxg7, white can start checking the king with the rook, as long as he doesn't move the rook to a square where the queen can capture it. If white captures the rook with the King, it's a stalemate. In addition, because black now have two back rows to move around on, he doesn't have to move his rook, which can stay on f5. The white king can never escape and help with a checkmate, and the black king can just waltz around in the g7-h8 square (as long as you don't enter h6, in which case you lose, because your king is stuck, and even if you get to h8, white can get his king into a position where your rook can't check him without being captured by the queen). So this analysis is completely wrong.

On the 16:10 the Queen should not reply with Qc8 check, because the Rook will cover, so the better check should be Qe6, and after Rf7 white Kg4 with tempo while the Rook is pinned.

I agree completely with that guy who said slower games make for more interesting games..... I mean.... imagine like... an email chess game between carlsen and another top player and how much better that would be than a 6 minute blitz or something. Edit: I just heard it again and it seems that may not even be what you said lol.

At the end of the game(17:00), wouldn't the game result in a draw if you capture with the pawn? Rook captures, pawn captures, king G8, let's say you push e7, then you get king F7. And after this, if you push e8, to queen, you get king captures on E8, if you move the king to try and protect the e7 queen, black simply advances with the pawn. I am not sure if the white king even has time to catch it. P.S I have no ideea how to set up an engine to see if this works, so I might be wrong
@Rutars
@Rutars 6 жыл бұрын
I was also confused by that but I found the winning line for white. After king G8, you have to move the white king to D6, and after KF6, KD7 you force the black king to retreat or move the pawn. Either way you will have protected the white pawn.

true, if you move the black rook to h2 or a6, after the white king moved to f4, you'll get an endless moving around and rather a draw than a win for white, as shown by fritz

The position at 14:59 is not a win for white, it's a draw (ignore Stockfish's +4.00 claim). Black plays g6 and this is still a fortress with the knight pawn (check with tablebases if you want quick proof). This is one reason why Carlsen avoided 50.Qxc6?, which is actually a drawn position. So it wasn't laziness or inaccuracy from Carlsen, but rather very precise play! Also the answer to 51...Rxf5 is not 52.Qc8+? when 52...Rf8 draws (the usual Philidor fortress), but instead 52.Qe6+ Rf7 53.Kxg4 (and some more precise moves to follow). It's very tricky.

I think the claim that Qc8 was winning was a very forgivable oversight. However, the first mistake you mention was less forgivable. The error was made earlier, at around 13:55, when talking about if the viewers would play c6. "You would still be winning" is simply false, and this was why Carlsen did not play c6, he was not "too lazy to calculate". I think that the knowledge that it is still a fortress with the pawn on g6 is very useful for a semi serious chess player, and I hope agadmator will spend some more time checking tablebases next time around.

I might be wrong here but at the final postion where topalov resigned, I think the game could still be drawn by them. Rxe6, fxe6, Kg8, e7, Kf7, then if the king defends the e7 pawn black could push f7, then if the king decides to try to capture the past pawn the black king could capture on e7 then a draw would occur. -IDK (If I'm wrong feel free to correct me :)

16:14 looks like an inaccuracy in light of Rf8. To gain a decisive advantage you'd have to try Qe6 instead, pinning the rook and then advancing with your king.
