Honestly, real talk on the "holding on through the embarrassing period". Couldn't have phrased it better myself. I graduated uni, quit both of my jobs, took the year off to learn a vfx trade that has 0/nothing/nada to do with my degree. And there was a straight year and a half of explaining to aunts, uncles, colleagues of my boyfriend, what it was I was "doing". While unemployed, while still living with my parents. Can confirm that sticking with your gut through embarrassing periods are 100% worth it. I now have a career in that trade, and when I tell people my journey, I honestly couldn't care less what their reaction to it is anymore lol. I set a career goal, I'm financially independent off of it. End of story.

What you were saying about having no other option.... that one really struck me. I’m a 26 year old woman with ADHD trying to build my own business because most work environments don’t work for me, and my family doesn’t get it. They keep saying I’m choosing this, but it legitimately doesn’t feel like an option. I really really appreciated you opening up about your struggles with ADHD also - that really struck a chord for me.

This is aspirational, Kim. I graduate at the end of April and I've been wanting so deeply to begin building a life where self-care is built in. I don't want to curate a checklist of self-care tasks that is necessary for me to maintain sanity and wellness. I want my path in life to fulfill me on its own, not destroy or drain me. It'll take hard work and sacrifice but it will be so worth it. Graduate school's not in my future or anything traditionally "impressive" and I'm OK with that!

Love this perspective on your life as self care. I think self care is insidious because our culture encourages people to relentlessly work and pursue money then tells us to take care of yourself by going to the spa, or the salon or something else that involves consumerism basically. We can take care of ourselves by making choices when we can that create less stress and say no personally or professionally to things that dont bring us happiness. I chose years ago to take a step back in my career and to work at a lower level and not take promotions and additional responsibility and have been so happy with my decision. I've always put me first and dont go to events I dont want to or generally do anything I dont want to which I recognize is a privilege given I am able to make a great living still, dont want to be married or have kids which affords me lots of choices. I also appreciate the fact that you repeatedly state that although you are extremely talented you recognize that luck is always involved because talent is unlimited but opportunity is not. I'd say the same for my situation as well and dont give advice for that reason, I grew up poor and although very good at what I do a lot of stars had to line up for me to end up where I am and I never forget that and the fact that luck can change at any moment.

I snapped my fingers at "it definitely helped to not chase after dudes in my 20s". As a late-30something, shyt 30s too! Get to a place where you can opt-in to a relationship that benefits you rather than "need" one because you can provide a life for yourself that fulfills you in a way that no other person can. I'm not in the same category but I was bouncing from employer to employer before it was cool, and def had an "embarrassing" phase. it builds character and lets you hone in on what you really want.

Kimberly I love this! This is so relatable. I actually reposted your stories on this. I intentionally work a low impact job at a University. It pays me less than what I could demand corporately, I can easily command six figures with my experience and skill set but I choose ease and quality of life and my friends are befuddled by my refusal to just chase the bag. I’m blessed enough to have corrected financial mistakes (credit/debt) so that I can make these types of choices. It also takes a little sacrifice, although I could afford a more modern building (Chicago), I live in an older building with no amenities because less expensive. Small choices like those have helped me build a life that is self-care.

Lol for someone who hates giving advice you give great advice. I am 31 and I work a full time-scheduled from 9am to 7pm and I love it! Loving it also means that I can also try new things, like making videos about books, like taking time off to just relax and enjoy being free. Sometimes I feel like we're scared to admit that we're allowed to be into different things at different times. Freedom and joy is so different, I have such complicated feelings about the term "self care" because for me I care for myself daily. The big change for me was moving to another country, I feel freer and I'm enjoying my life. I love your content and I've watched you talk about so many things and people I didn't know.

Perspective on success while partnered: I envisioned my life much more like yours, and thought I'd meet my life partner in my late 20s or 30s. But, I accidentally met my husband when I was 22, A BABY, but because he was supportive of my career growth, it meant I was equally not shopping around for men, but could focus on myself. That is 100% luck/chance, and not what I planned, but if you meet someone great it doesn't have to mean game over for your career.

But in reality, it's what you did and are doing. It's believing in your goals and worth. Taking the path that honors your true desires. Self-Care isn't 10 million dollars and Birkin bags. It's following your truth no matter the consequences and that isn't bright, happy, or linear. We need to reframe Self-Care so that black women know that they have access to it. Self-Care is a process and you're living proof!

Okay wait! Serious question: I feel like I see a lot of people who attain success (whatever that may look like for themselves) and then talk about how they’ve managed to now move away from being haunted by perfectionism, overachieving, etc. I sometimes feel confused because I wonder, had you dealt with these feelings of inadequacy before, do you think you would have sacrificed and worked as hard as you did in your twenties? I guess I wonder, is getting to a place of security in an emotionally healthy way even feasible (lol)? I feel like a lot of people become more materially successful, and then arrive at a feeling of personal worth and establish boundaries between themselves and their work, get their priorities straight etc. I guess part of this progression is natural. I would love to hear anybody’s thoughts on this.

I am just curious why this conversation about self-care was so centered in having a satisfying career and how that negates the need for self-care. I have a job I love and feel lucky to have, but this pandemic put me through it. I definitely needed some self care to get through that. A satisfying, flexible job doesn’t insulate you from what’s going on in the world around you or from issues with family and friends and we all sometimes need some me-time to deal with those.
