This is an underrated picture. Nichols did a nice job directing it, and its really under his control that it lives. IMO, he actually got a good performance out of Bergen while she had never really been credible before. And he made a story that really could have been a play into a film. For example, this shot with her walking toward us in the background and the phone in the foreground gives us a sense of foreboding as to what is going to occur. The film is full of these kinds of touches. Its strange that Nichols' career went south so fast after this film. From Day of the Dolphin on, its like he wanted to just make money.

The scriptwriting was amazing in this film. And it is like the dialogue was written specifically for each talented actor.

"I don't feel anything anymore." "Neither do I." If they didn't feel anything, they wouldn't be so miserable. :((

She's not telling the truth, though. She's just trying to save face, and maybe get back at him. And clearly when she says that it angers him - he wanted to be the one twisting the knife.

Funny, when this movie was shot, Candice Bergen and her boyfriend, Doris Day's son, were hanging out with Charles Manson and his family cult.
