I DON'T Feel Good - Croatian Trouser Tension - P2T EP08

The eighth installment of my 5000 mile solo road trip to the Balkans on board the mighty BMW R1250 GS Adventure.
In this episode I talk of a trouser emergency and get rather lonely as I head to the gorgeous Croatian Coast. Comment "Marmite Baguette" if you read this.
Permission to Torque is a Mental Health movement set up to show others that you "get it" by displaying a discrete symbol for others to take comfort in. Its not about sitting around in a circle feeling sorry for yourself, its about shared experience and getting out there to find out what makes us happy - this is the aim of my trip and why I am sharing it on KZbin, the good days and the inevitable bad ones too.
I hope you enjoy the journey with me and find it at least vaguely useful! :)

I can relate to this episode… last year I planned a week trip for the girl I was seeing to do the Cabot Trail ( 2 up on my GS ). Two weeks of planning and buying her gear / coms … she bailed 30 minutes before departure… Here I am bike fully packed for us and now it gets cancelled… I sat for an hour chain smoking …grumbling … cursing … finally I said $&@k it. Stripped her stuff off the bike and went solo. It was the weirdest & best feeling going solo. Prior to this I had never done a long haul solo. I also had a few moments of “ this sucks alone “ or “ maybe turn around and go home “. I pushed through my own head space and learned a lot about myself. Now I have the confidence to do solo trips :) One day I’ll meet my “ 2 up girl “ until then … the world is my oyster !

I think this has been a brilliant series so far, Baron. I have followed you for a long time and you've never made it a secret that you struggle with mental health challenges in the past; but, since you've revealed your face and name to the world, and you speak to everyone showing your face while being so candid with your struggles as they are happening, it seems so much more personal and I really think that may help those that struggle in their own heads much more effectively. Thank you kind sir and look forward to the next episodes! Marmite Baguette ... 🥖✊️

Have booked my CBT and Mod 1/2 as have wanted to get a bike for ages so now is the time to do it for myself. Thanks for being so open and honest, who knew a bloke on a bike talking about having a wank and the shits was what I needed to feel seen and heard.

Just puts it into perspective, here I am moping at the fact I have a shit job and can barely find a car with the savings I have. Watching someone on KZbin who's travelling the world and looks like they are having the time of their life on a beautiful bike. When in reality he's just feeling as shit and we're all on the shit coaster together.

Hey, I´m probably gonna get ridiculed by a bunch of "Le epic science trolls", but I´ve been suffering from terrible anxiety and agoraphobia for over 15 years (Diagnosed, not the TikTok kind). I tried probably every antidepressant known to man, and it did sh*t all. But ever since I started taking Ashwagandha (Sounds like psychodelics, but isn´t), my symptoms of anxiety and agoraphobia have been reduced by probably 80%. I was highly sceptic of "Alternative Medicine", still am, but all I can say is that this stuff has helped me more than any "real" medicine from the pharmacy, when it comes to mental illness. I hope you´ll get better. Stay strong.

Chris, I can wake up one morning and feel incredibly positive about something and then the next day feel completely s##t about the very same thing. It’s always been that way for me and I know now that you just have to accept it in the knowledge it will pass, maybe not tomorrow, but eventually. Depression is not about what you have; you can rationalise why you should be happy (and why you feel guilty about not being happy) all you like, but that’s not the way depression works, it’s not your fault, it just goes with the territory. On a lighter note, a bit of genuine praise always helps a bit and I have to say, after watching the video you did recently track testing the new BMW s1000RR…….you can ride a bit can’t you fella! (Elbow down an’ all)

I know what you mean Chris. Recently my relationship with a lovely lady ended after 7 years (in a good, well-mannered way). I try to focus on what I do have and I'm blessed with (family, my children, life-long friends, work, my wellness, my bikes), but sometimes it can be those little moments where you feel like 'wish she was here to experience this with me'. Hang in there man, it'll get better. Know your worth, focus on you, a relation is a valuable addition, but not a necessity. Oh, and Marmite Baguette ;-)

I did a trip a few years back and got really dehydrated after the first day's riding. I can't beilieve how much it affected my mood. I was super anxious getting into the hotel and all I could think about was how much I wanted to go home. Ironically, a couple of beers in the local helped, chugged a load of water before bed, and felt much better in the morning. I would definitely consider a Camelbak on any future trips.

I do recommend you go to Split it’s beautiful. Croatia is amazing the coastal road is a killer ride. Also if you manage to get to Montenegro the mountains and Kotor is spectacular. Ditto Greece the southern peninsula is f amazing. I know exactly what you mean about having lonely moments when travelling alone. I rode the Balkans alone mostly off road a few years ago. Sometimes you’ll be totally un motivated the good thing is if you push on then out of the blue you’ll meet some people or have an adventurous experience that will out weigh the low moments. But it’ll be completely ad hoc that’s why it’s an adventure. I enjoy your posts because of the honesty both in the moments of grumble as well as the humour. Ride on brother and you’ll see it’ll be a worth it the balkans is a breathtaking region with amazing and hospitable people !

Hi dude. Your videos are an inspiration. Travelling isn't easy for us all and doing it alone is a real challenge. Two sayings I've garnered in my lifetime I try to remember. Thoughts aren't facts. This is just a reality check when feeling down. Secondly, things will be ok in the end. If things aren't ok now then it's not the end. Iv been watching 44 for a long time but only came across this channel/series last night and been watching episode after episode, it's brilliant. I have to say the things you have said about if your not a hardened tourer it can be scary and daunting but your doing it, and the way you've opened up about your personal life, and feeling anxious ect, I think you will have connected with people on a personal level and encouraged everyday people to think he's just a normal person just like me and if he can do it then maybe I can. I have rode from manchester to assen a few times with friends for the gp, but I'd love to do something like this, but as nervous/anxious person I'm like ye no chance. But this has gave me a feeling of hope towards doing something like this. 👍

After 1,5 weeks around Europe i decided to turn around and go back home as quick as possible. Had a few good days, saw amazing things, and decided it was enough. Sometimes we try and run away from mental troubles by undertaking a range of things, but the underlying challenges remain.

Riding solo definitely puts you in your own head... and on every long trip I've had a couple stages of "emotional challenge". The first is after a day or two of a long trip when you're racing away from your life and all your loved ones. This year I was riding the TAT and on the second day I crashed in some very soft silt and then noticed that I'd lost one of my bags earlier that day (the only Mosko Moto bag that wasn't physically attached to the kit, was just held in by friction) which cost me my tent poles, 360 camera mount and some other bits. Was feeling very down for a good part of that day's ride and fought it by staying at a really nice resort where I could stretch out, get online and sort out my stuff. Next morning went and bought a new tent after a nice breakfast and carried on. Then there's late in the trip when you're getting tired... you're beat up (especially if you're riding dirt like the TAT/TET/ETC...), your bike is beat up, and you've been away from home for weeks or months... that can be really tough. I didn't have a plan for dealing with that just kept riding. I found that stopping in places where I could walk to a local pub in the evening and socialize helped quite a bit (surprised me since I'm an introvert).
