Before anyone thinks I'm hating on BABYMONSTER or the members themselves, I want to make it perfectly clear that I vehemently praise all of the members for undeniable hard work, talent, and dedication, let alone as a group from one of the biggest companies in the industry. I also am not here to bash or insult anyone who does like them, everyone has their own taste in who they like! I'm not here to criticize them on their talents, potential, or their existence in general.
I know being a group debuting under YG obviously gives them a huge leg up in terms of developing a fan base and international reach, especially considering that YG and their social media team are branding them as the next BLACKPINK, but the fame BABYMONSTER has reached before they've even debuted is unprecedented and, to be honest, confuses me greatly. After watching their pre-debut performances, covers, and eval video tapes, I'm... just not getting it?
Their concept is not new, their sound (from what we've heard so far in their covers and pre-debut song) isn't fresh or distinct compared to other newly debuted/rookie groups. Yes they've got great vocalists and dancers, but it's not anything you couldn't find in one of the current big girl groups or rookie groups of 3rd and 4th gen. Honestly, their concept is executed in a way where it feels like they're just copy-pasting what's already circulating in the industry, rather than an attempt at creating their own image and group personality exclusive to them. Watching their 2NE1 dance mashup performance just felt like watching a younger, less experienced reiteration of BLACKPINK with a whole bunch of crazy lights and positive judge reactions layered on top of it. In short, it is of my opinion that there's not anything new they're bringing to the table of the KPOP industry.
While they are by all means a completely separate group from BLACKPINK, I can't help but feel that they really do just come off as an attempt at another BLACKPINK by YG but with more members. Yes, it is obvious that branding this way appeals to people who aren't super into KPOP but like BLACKPINK, but it just sucks that they're not becoming their own thing. Perhaps I'm feeling this way more because of YG's promotion of them and the way they are trying to shape this group to their audience, but I really just wish they chose to go all-out on a new, never-seen before group concept rather than trying to remake BLACKPINK, which we all know is a futile game plan. I would have been much, much more excited if BABYMONSTER as a group built off of a new foundation for them to really shine as their own individual identity instead of how they are currently being promoted.
Maybe this is also because I'm biased towards groups who go more out-of-the-box with their concept and music, but I can't help but feel underwhelmed by such an immensely anticipated group. Not to mention the fact that they are all VERY young, which is a whole other discussion in itself (although this is not a considerable factor in my opinion expressed above, just not a factor that is necessarily helping them in my eyes).
I think this is opinion is unpopular because, obviously, they are the most anticipated debut group of the year, and there are many fans who frame them as the next sensational, worldwide-dominant girl group. Maybe I'm missing something or haven't watched the best of what they have to offer so far, but I'm really just not getting the hype.
