I was kind of on the fence about it for a while. Arguments could be made that there were ups and downs for each member and it depended on what people focused on. But two things made it so obvious for me that it could no longer be denied: (1) the weird, inexplicable way that Lisa's album sales reports were handled in order to prevent her from "officially" reaching the million sales milestone. Like the sales all just magically stopped at 950,000 and never increased after that and YG just somehow "forgot" to register the album of the company's most popular artist with GAON so "statistics could never be counted". (When YG later made the million sales milestone a major part of the promotions for Jisoo's solo album, it became clear what the strategy was. According to YG, Lisa was never supposed to get that record. It was reserved for someone else. So they had to take unusual steps to make sure that Lisa wouldn't reach that milestone "officially".) (2) In the information that YG provided to Time magazine for the "group of the year" article, the treatment of Lisa was horrific. In the section highlighting each member, none of Lisa's accomplishments were mentioned...and the names of her solo songs were not mentioned. For example, they said that Jisoo has the most followers of any "Korean actor"...but did not even mention that Lisa has any followers at all (so nobody reading the article would realize that she has the most followers period for anyone in Korea and third most for Asia). They mentioned other members' impact in the fashion world and called them ambassadors. For Lisa, they just generically said that she "reps" for Celine. For Jisoo, they said that she got the highest EMV at her fashion event in the fall. They didn't mention that Lisa got the highest EMV for the whole year. According to the article (and the info was obviously provided by YG), Lisa was made to look like the least popular member and a member who had no accomplishments worth mentioning. At that point, I was like...okay...Lisa really is downplayed and treated differently by YG, often in a bad way.

While most members' families were in South Korea, Rosè family mainly reside in Australia, You implying that Rosè gets to see her family regularly isn't accurate. I exactly I do think that some of the fans confuse her being popular because people were able to see her talent with her being treated right. Also, in terms of companies just doing auditions and getting foreign members for the sake of doing it you are 100% correct. As someone who is a big fan of K-pop and has been for many years, but also I someone who is Chinese and Thai-mixed and has watched as foreign idols started being introduced into K-pop. That’s the only reason why JYP entertainment started this bullshit with 2 PM and MissA with questionable reasons to a degree I don’t necessarily think it was the worst idea, but I feel like after they do that, and other company saw the success. Nichkhun literally sat there and became the prince of Thailand because of him the viewing as an idol he brought so much popularity for K-pop to Thailand, and then with miss A it wasn’t as big, but it definitely got the Chinese general public and fans hyped about K-pop a bit more than they already were like they like K-pop they like J Pop they like the whole Idol idea because we didn’t really fucking have idols in China but I feel like after other company saw that they decided that they needed to be inclusive too. But after the whole SM situation with the two Chinese members for super junior M, and then the whole EXO situation, I feel like K-pop fans as a whole should’ve started paying way more attention to how foreign idols are being treated. Yet I think that it’s the same issue that it kind of was before where people kind of overlooked how badly JYP entertainment treated the Chinese members of miss A where it’s like because they did have a fan base and they were fairly popular people mistake, their popularity with being treated correctly when in actuality, it’s like no one I think people underestimate how much a country will root for their own in a foreign country, trying to make it as a celebrity and two people forget that others will pick up and notice someone’s potential there a talent so they will stand them. They will become a fan of theirs, but that doesn’t mean that they’re getting promoted or treated, right.

YG literally wanted to prevent her from being the first to reach the "million" sales record...so that another member could claim that record a year later. It's so obvious that it's almost funny. Her sales were very strong and went all the way up to 950,000 in a very short time...and then completely froze for more than a year. Many fans at the time even complained that YG cancelled orders for her albums and refunded money...instead of selling albums. YG apparently wanted people to believe that Lisa almost became the first to get a million sales, but suddenly everyone around the world just stopped buying on the exact same day and not even one more album was sold for more than a year. Later, when it became too obvious that YG was doing something screwy, YG tried to explain it away as an "accident" and that they somehow "forgot" to register her album with GAON and because they didn't register it GAON stopped reporting sales statistics. Yeah...right. Sure, YG. That's what happened. You just "forgot" to register the album of the most popular artist under your label.

Yeah, people will argue about various things back and forth because a lot of information is hidden and people have to go by clues and hints. For example, until the Bvlgari CEO made a public post about how it was actually YG who was not allowing Lisa to attend events, some people would argue that it was Lisa's fault or claim that it was the brands who weren't inviting her. Thankfully, the Bvlgari CEO put the spotlight on YG's bad behavior, making it hard for YG to keep playing that game...and Lisa was finally able to start attending events. Other companies that were creating great opportunities for Lisa (such as Penshoppe and MAC) have indicated that after their first contract with Lisa, YG raised the costs so much that they couldn't renew to keep the relationship going. In Korean luxury department stores now, we can ONLY see Jennie, Jisoo and Rose. Lisa has disappeared completely. All of the contracts that she previously had (such as MAC and some others) were phased out, apparently by YG making it difficult to renew. It's like YG decided to stop allowing her to do big global campaigns for global brands and decided that she could only do things with Thai companies, with campaigns being mainly only in Thailand. Even there, the Dentiste CEO complained that he had to keep pushing YG for attention because they kept ignoring his requests for a deal with Lisa. The clearest case, however, is the album sales freeze. To this day, YG has never provided any reasonable explanation as to why they did not report her real sales the way they did for other members. They have never provided any reasonable explanation as to why YG actually cancelled many orders for her albums (which is also a matter of record as many fans complained at the time that they put in orders and YG responded by cancelling the orders and refunding money). Everybody knows that she sold more albums than indicated by the number reported by YG, which never changed for more than a year. The reasonable conclusion is that YG really knew that Lisa was going to set records for sales that could not be broken and YG wanted to be sure that the next member to release a solo album would be able to get those sales "records" for promotional and pride reasons...which is what happened. It's just an indication of how manipulative and scheming YG often is behind the scenes. (Even just based on common sense, how likely is it that Lisa's sales would skyrocket up to 950,000...and then just stop...so that she couldn't reach the magic "million" milestone, which would have been the record to be talked about. The only way it would be more obvious that YG was playing tricks is if it froze at 999,999 album sales. lol.)

And YG has always been very bad at supporting solo artist activities (just ask Lee Hi, who spent a total of 6 years (two 3-year hiatuses) not being allowed to do anything during the 7 years that she was at YG). YG (actually YHS) would not mentally ever be willing to give up having TOTAL CONTROL (meaning the ability to ignore artists completely if he wants to) in writing. I'm pretty sure that's why the BP members simply could not re-sign as individuals. They probably wanted to, but only if YG would guarantee that they could be very active and have a lot of freedom. YG wouldn't agree to that, so they could not take the risk of YG just phasing them out and ignoring them during the next 5 years or so.

My guess is that the original concept and intention of YG for Blackpink was that Lisa was supposed to help gain popularity for...the group. She was supposed to help attract more international fans for...the group. But she was never supposed to be the most popular member of the group. She was supposed to be like a supporting actor. Lisa just did her job and did her thing, and became naturally much more than just a supporting actor. YG has always seemed a bit troubled and confused because things didn't go exactly as planned. IIRC, they have changed it now. It really was mainly just a policy and not a requirement by law. The main culprit was the KMCA (Korea Music Copyright Association) who decided not to pay royalties to "foreign" artists if the countries those artists were from did not choose to join some international association that KMCA wanted them to join. (Some association that sets standards for royalty payments across borders.) It should not have been a valid reason for not paying royalties owed to artists living and working legally under valid visas in Korea. But they apparently chose to withhold royalty payments anyway. IIRC, Thailand has since joined the international association. I don't know if the KMCA still does the same thing to other artists whose countries have not joined the international association. In any case, YG easily could have done a work-around to make sure that Lisa got paid. But they didn't.

These kinds of channels are constantly mispronouncing everything...probably because they use computer voice apps. They sound like real voices. But they're just apps that read written-out scripts. Like the voice in this one, you can hear it in many other channels. One of the other most popular computer voices is the "guy with a British accent" that can be heard in hundreds of different channels that do things this way. However you can't complain when you branch out but don't want anyone coming in. I know that every country in the world has racists and Korea doesn't really welcome immigration. However with a staggering low birth rate they'll need to welcome in foreigners who genuinely love and respect their culture. I'm not a Blink but Lisa's awesome and talented. I hope she continues to do well in Korea and abroad.

Whatever YG's reasons are, YG has obviously treating Lisa differently from the 3 Korean members of BP. The public, upon realizing this, can only assume the worst about YG (i.e. racism, favoritism, jealousy, greed, etc) . There is certainly enough ammunition here to make a case. This is a different form of "human trafficking" .... sounds harsh, right ? Think about it, YG signs a contract with minor to "train" her even though her ability is beyond their own choreographers and dance instructors (and even YG himself). For years (the life of the contract) YG holds her down, taking advantage of her global popularity (and making bank $$$). Finally, with the global stage knocking at Lisa's door (Paris fashion, various global ambassador offers, random contract offers) Lisa comes to the realization of reality ...... and chooses to not renew her contract (best decision for her). Now, the world is at her doorstep on her own terms ... let's see what she does.

This sounds similar to the treatment that the Chinese members of EXO were subjected to, hence the reason why most of them left. When brands wanted Chinese members to represent their products, SM would say that the Chinese member is not available and then force TWO Korean members onto the brand. Also, none of the Chinese members were ever allowed to return to China. So yeah, it seems that this is something that all foreign idols have to deal with.
