It was Ansel Adams who said “A photograph is usually looked at- seldom looked into.” which is the perfect answer to those that are quick to criticize any photographers work without knowing the full story behind any particular shot. This video is not only inspirational, but a great response to those who have looked at, rather than looked into, your work. Keep shooting, keep posting and enjoy your next free hour 👍📷👍

Great content! I always think "yeah but they don't have kids" or "yeah but I have a full time job that sucks out a lot of time" and then I hear you saying "full time job, 5 kids 2 part time and some time in the community", that really hit home, I'll change my mindset. This has been inspirational. Thanks! Ough and the part about when I can't dedicate half a day to go out shooting so instead will watch others shoot on KZbin for 2 hours... Damn that's me 😊

I get one photo I want to save every single day. Simple goal. Not up to the standards of many better photographers but it's been great for me. I have been though more in the last 6 months than ever in my life. I started one photo when taking breaks from the hospital during a trying time. I have saved one photo I like every day for 5 months now and it is therapeutic, enjoyable and also grown my skills.

All of those people criticizing your photos are the ones who live vicariously through KZbin. They are jealous that you have the desire and you make it happen. You grab every opportunity to go push the shutter, while they watch KZbin and wish they had the energy or desire to go out and take photos. I loved this video and I think all of the photos were amazing!

Ok. I’m really valuing your photography message lately. The last video you released, “my favorite B&W film” where the comments were turned off- as per KZbin policy. That brought me to tears. It was so beautifully edited. Very touching scenes. It made me remember my Son growing up. The Wonderment of Youth. I saw my young Son in those clips. He is almost 17 now. No more of him being a little boy. No more, him holding my hand crossing the street. Those times in That Moment we don’t think of that, we are busy in the busyness of the day. Time moves on so slowly, yet it’s flying by at the same time. I have books and books of negatives of him growing up. I feel not needed anymore. This chapter of my life is bittersweet. My life is wrapping up and his is blossoming and I am happy that I got to stop time but for an instant so many times and record his life in pictures. We only have 24 hours a day. To me it’s important to photograph. It means everything to cherish that memory. Thank you for letting me look back and remember those moments through your video. 🙏

"Dad, I'm not little!" Your daughter was hilarious this episode. Nice work on the video and pictures, man. 👍 I 100% agree with you, Andrew! Don't use time as an excuse. I use whatever spare moment I have to film, do videography, or edit when I am not spending time with my kids. Like you, I shot photos of my kids at Taekwondo and even some pillars outside of where they train to practice symmetry photography. This evening, when I got home from work, I took some video and timelapse of the horrifying hail-filled sky. Just get out there and shoot!

I can't believe folks were criticizing your photographs in the video. Certainly, they were shot under time pressure, difficult conditions, bad light, etc., but that's not the point. The point is that they furthered your own goals, and most importantly, you were *taking pictures*. Ira Glass said that once your taste was better than your work, instead of giving up, you had to keep going and make a lot of work. Harry Callahan said that "to be a photographer, one must *photograph*". I applaud you for that, and would implore other folks to look past the surface. Besides, I liked quite a few of your photographs.

This was so so helpful:I am a stay home dad of twins and have my other two boys after school until my wife gets home. Was feeling down on myself for not being able to walk the streets alone to focus. We live in cold Cleveland and its hard to walk around the streets with nine month old babies but this was for sure helpful.

I totally agree with your position on the issue of lack of time. It is not the lack of time but the person focusing on what you want to photograph. The rest of the video is the perfect example of how simplicity and a modest attitude towards life, can have magnificent artistic and creative results and to serve as an example is inspiration to all who follow your work. It remains for me to sincerely thank this gift of creativity and humility that I receive through your work. Thank you!

Absolutely love and agree with your attitude, especially towards people saying they are bad photos. I love how your photos highlight little things that most people would walk past and that is something I am looking forward to working on and improving. I have a feeling a lot of the people putting these shots down are also the ones that say they don't have "time" for photography.

Alright, I've got a few things to say. I work upwards of 70 hours a week and have definitely said "I don't have time for photography". This video has inspired me to look at my day by the hour instead of by how much of my time is being spent at work. I'd also like to say that the second day where you spent the day with your kids made me choke up a bit. My wife is pregnant and I just can't wait to meet the little dude. See you with your kids capturing unique moments makes me feel like I too will have that even with my busy schedule. Thank you for this video. I've subscribed. Can't wait to see more of your content. Oh and one more thing, don't listen to the haters. Whatever you create is only as good as you make it. Not others and their opinions. Creativity doesn't come from tearing someone down. It comes from encouragement and knowing that you created something.

I love those photos. Not sure why anyone who genuinely loves and most of all understands photography would hate on them. The tires, the shipping containers, all great shots. And I honestly would love seeing photos like that in a book as "new topographic" and abstracts. Great photos. I love them. But I'm very eclectic in my love of art. I favour some types much more than others but I thoroughly enjoy them all. Those were great shots. But my favs are still the shots in SF of that vintage car in the tunnel, the two parallel trains and that red newspaper box.

Meant to respond to this before but got distracted. I think it's easy for guys like me to say "use every spare second to shoot and stay inspired" when we're not doing it full time. What I truly respect are folks like you you do it to survive, who don't just get the luxury of doing it when it's convenient or when they are feeling creative. Excellent video. I was one who put time as a main factor keeping me from getting the photos that I want. Ive been taking photography seriously for a year now and I have taken many photos all while completing my masters degree. It has definitely been my creative outlet, and it has been a lot of fun. But, time has definitely made me feel guilty about taking that time to use for photography instead of my degree or x2 x3 x4 things I could have been doing. Like you said, its all about focus and perspective. I am excited to move soon to a new city where I will have endless opportunities to get out and explore and shoot. Plus, ill be done with my degree! Late to the party, but right off the bat... Hey look, a cameo appearance of one of my insanely long comments! :P Definitely love the idea of the "hour of power", and just how motivating it can be for a lot of various hobbies. It's definitely a rather useful one to go with, and just go with the flow, and like you said, deal with the constraints you have but still enjoy shooting photos. Some of my favourite shots were done in terrible lighting conditions, hurried (usually with less than two seconds of thought put into it).... A surprising amount of my favourites are ones I've snagged with a mobile phone, simply because it's all I had at the time (it's what I use to justify picking up a newer, shinier phone... Well, apart from obvious things like the current one being old, or doesn't hold a proper charge anymore - recently acquired the Huawei P20 Pro due to it's low light capability that fits in your pocket and does ten other things too), although I'm slowly working towards picking up a good compact camera that I can take out with me pretty much anywhere (like the X100F) but doesn't have that "commitment" of bringing my G85 and lenses along with me, and/or would cause issues with some venues (funny how some places have no problem with a camera in a hip pocket, but ohh, you have a camera bag?). Heck, I've even been tempted to just pick up a three or five pack of Fuji Superia 200 or Superia Xtra 400 and put it into my point and shoot (since I don't have a film SLR at the moment) The shot at 8:25 is just... Oh man, that's such a classic silly kid shot ^_^

Very relatable video, I enjoyed this one, and love the music vibe! I talk to a lot of people who want to start their own business (I currently own and run 3) and they think they can only do it if they can dive right in full-time and replace their current income immediately. My advice is always to start your company on the side and be ready and willing to work double time, but that also has to increase, and then slowly they start to replace each other if and only if you’re driven enough to make that happen. So last night I pulled the trigger on an X-T3 with kit lens, and the 56mm 1.2 for portrait work (which I do mostly.) I’m very excited to start my Fuji journey!

Excellent! Most bodacious! Speaking of heightened awareness: one of the peculiar results of my deciding to start taking photos for myself in my everyday life rather than just for professional/educational purposes was that I started not just seeing things I never saw before, but started hearing things -- what people said in the street, noises by the river, etc etc. An incidental training in awareness. ... And as for that element of practice practice practice: amen brother!

Leica, Sony, Fujifilm, Panasonic ... They all have their field. They are different. No one tool for every job. I recently tested a G9, a X-H1 and had a A7III in my hands. None of them is a bad tool. Its more about the lenses. And the situations you want to use it for. I think you will like the combination of m4/3 and Sony ff for filming and the x-t2 for photos. That was my personal conclusion after my tests. I wish you a lot of fun and for us more of your great videos here :-)

I watched this vlog twice and have thought about it a lot. Your point about making time or just creatively using the time you have hit me hard. I thought about all the things that interest me, things that I want to do and learn and grow in. And in each of them, the same thing applies no matter if it is a creative pursuit or something else. I love photography. I also love playing guitar. I get great pleasure from paddling my flat water kayak on the small rivers and large streams that cover our part of Tennessee. And then there are bicycles I really enjoy building, riding, and maintaining. But for each of these things, I have to decide what time I can allocate to be able to really enjoy and embrace each of them. Each interest requires time and practice to have any competence. Organization is the key... And remembering to practice! (In real life, I fly an EMS helicopter. We practice for emergencies in the simulator and in the aircraft at least once a quarter so that if something happens, we can react with a plan. Sound familiar? Just like real life?)

So very true. Yes, to all of that, it's so easy to find a reason not to do something. I think it's all about habit, it's too easy to slip into the habit not doing something, of expecting something to go wrong. I have a friend whose default position is, 'yes, of course, I can do that .. whatever', it's incredibly motivating. I enjoy these philosophical/inspirational videos.

Nice video. Glad that you did this one as I suffer from the same problem! I posted a blog on my website referencing your video here about grabbing what time is available to do photography.

Inspiring video, but more importantly, helpful video. The idea of focus is inspiring, yet I think what touched me the most is showing how you do it every day. Focus may drive you to make certain choices, but you're not saying: 'stop doing this.' You're showing how life is full of those little moments that are not perfect, but that absence of the perfect conditions is what is to embrace. Also, you discuss training the eye, finding the strange in the familiar, the insane in the mundane, and that shooting frequently in flat suburbia is a great way to develop that vision. Often, when we go to exotic location or are served with exotic situations, the shot just hows itself, but in those situations you described, we have to find the better shot. It's great fun and a great skill to develop. I've worked this kind of pattern into my life. I leave a little early for work, so that I can spend 20 to 40 minutes, mid-commute, to shoot pictures. I try to do it every few days, grabbing different lenses. It has helped me tremendously. Anyway, enough babbling. Great thoughts and tricks you've shared. Thanks!

Yes, there are better photos in better conditions. But these are amazing for the time you had and I loved this video’s message. On top of that, if I may, the photos may be the representation of limitation to which you applied your creativity, but the video on this video is top! Lots of creativity there. Absolutely amazing way to show that daily life indeed deserves to be documented. Which is why i love so much that you don’t categorize yourself as a photographer beyond documentary photography. Photographing your everyday is your super power.

Great video man! Love the ideas presented. I find myself struggling with time as well and I think just going out and not waiting for the “perfect time” is such a simple but brilliant idea. Thanks for creating this.

I can honestly say thank you!!! because you have been a great inspiration for many of us I know is not easy to do what you do and honestly think you are doing an amazing job giving to us all your passion for photography and personal honest thoughts when you have almost no time, specially in your life situation, that makes this video even more inspirational and for me the message is that if you love photography and that is your passion no matter how busy in life you are you can have at least 1 hour to improve, learn explore and grow in this amazing world of photography and.... by the way your pictures in my eyes are really good not to win awards but who cares you are doing the best you can at that moment and that for me is more important , thank you again and keep up the great work please... love it!

What a brilliantly honest and considerate video Andrew!..."time waits for no man" so we just have to use whatever time we have as creatively as we can...we don't have to journey to Iceland for those "Epic" shots of Waterfalls that have been photographed a million times by every Photo Tourist and have become so cliché as to be an irritation. Sometimes the light in our neighbourhoods can be Epic...the Sun shines in every Country and certainly many of our images are unique! Does the World need another "homage" to Ansel Adams with another photo of "Old Faithful"...I think not. Photography is like your coffee...it's more about taste, your taste...Milk or no milk, sugar or no sugar, flavour or no flavour...there's no such thing as an Objective standard of good or bad photography. Only perhaps images that we like or some not to our taste...I have 3 daughters and for many years when they were younger I had to do as you do...grab an hour here and there between bringing them to Sports training; Swimming lessons; Dancing, Drama & Piano lessons and so many more...my only usefulness was to be the "taxi" that drove them to lessons and picked them up afterwards! Sometimes I got a few gems of photos [depending on the light and how I could use it] other times I hardly took the camera out of my bag but just enjoyed a short walk...so your video resonates a lot with me and most working people I'm sure...I'm now retired just over 2 years and have much more time to explore my photography and feel it has improved...I still mostly take a walk for about an hour or so and see what happens...I moved from Dublin City to the countryside in Ireland and I'm exploring my new environment.

You are absolutely right. In todays times we always want everything perfect and we are not satisfied what we have around us. Just look on those perfect shots on instagram or 500px and you get easily discouraged because not to be so perfect. The thing about not having time is mostly a excuse. Instead of just taking every opportunity to be creative we focus on these exotic perfect shots.
