Hey everyone first off this is just my opinion I get why people are loving this game and I am glad that they are. I just keep getting asked about my opinion on it so I figured I would go ahead and do this video that I know I am just gonna get a ton of hate on.
My reviews are 100% unbiased and I will never do one unless I am confident enough to do so. I use a scale of 1 - 10 with 5 being a average game. Many professional reviewers use 7 as a average game which I find is more of a trick to convince you the consumer that a game is better then it really is.

This was the first time I raged at a Zelda game, just bought a switch on Sunday and I beat the game in 4 days of time. The bosses are lame and if you don’t do them in a specific order it feels impossible. And if you don’t want that to be a problem good luck grinding for hours just to get 3 or 4 more hearts that won’t do shit for you in the end. I still enjoyed a lot of it, my problem is the things that make me want to play a Zelda are not here. Bosses, big dungeons that are unique and creative that don’t all loom the exact same. Awsoke soundtrack. They did a good job on open world, just not the game for me, or sucks because I came into this game with the highest expectations I’ve ever had for a game and I was let down a lot. I’m enjoying Pokémon Sw/Sh more than Botw and it has worse reviews.

What kills me about this game is that because of its success, I feel like Zelda as a franchise is effectively dead. This was the first open world game for a lot of gamers which I guess makes sense why they find it so revolutionary - it was their skyrim. But if Nintendo ever goes back to making actual zelda games, their new fanbase is going to go "wtf is this?" and Nintendo knows it. From here on out this is what Zelda is.

I have the same fear. People like to call every open world a Botw clone, Which doesn't really any sense because open world games were a thing before Botw. I mean Skyrim, as you mentioned. Skyrim in my opinion did this open world thing, so much better. Botw is a dumbed down version of Skyrim in every way. Yeah the fact that you can climb is really nice, but you need so much stamina and if it is raining then you are screwed.

I enjoyed BOTW but I played links awakening right after and it made me realise how much better the traditional formula works. I want dungeons. I want to find a map, a compass, keys to open doors and a new item that gives me abilities to reach new areas. BOTW had none of this! It was just too open with too much repetition. Glide, climb, shrine, glide, climb, run, glide for hours on end. Then 4 incredibly short dungeons that were the device beasts that required no new equipment to defeat. I bought a switch specifically for BOTW so I feel a bit let down after all the hype. Thankfully links awakening was far better and gave me the zelda fix I was looking for!

I'm not sure how much I like it either, but I'm trying. What I dislike the most is just how overly complex the controls are. It uses every single button on the controller for different things (including every individual direction on the D-pad), and it's just too much. I end up hitting the wrong buttons sometimes, and the way things like bombs work is just ridiculous. First you take it out with L, then you hit R to throw (or drop with A), then you hit L again to detonate. It's also really annoying switching out weapons constantly, and cooking seems to be more of an annoyance then a fun game mechanic.

The biggest problem to me was you constantly had to micromanage your inventory. Walk into a new area, pause and change your gear. Time of day changes, pause and change your gear. Come to a mountain, pause and change your gear. Fight for 30 seconds, pause and replace your broken sword. Got hit, pause and eat something. Ate something, run around for 15 minutes to collect enough ingredients. Collected ingredients, go find a pot to cook them in and hope whatever you throw together actually makes something.

@@glass2271 bro, my steam account has over 100 games on it. I've played my fair share of open world rpg games to know what a good gaming "mechanic" looks like. Botw is severely lacking in the content department and thus the world feels quite empty, collecting 900 korok seeds and doing 120 repetitive shrines is not good content. The side quest are also very underwhelming and are just fetch quest. The dungeons are a complete joke compared to older zelda titles which is a shame. Hopefully the Botw sequel will fix some of these issues but i remain optimistic.

I feel like everywhere I go I use one of the runes. The fighting felt fluent. every where I went there was something new to find and do. I've played thru the game three times and I'm still finding new things to explore and discover. The dungeons weren't the focus of the game and neither were the koroks. The korok seeds were an optional thing to do and were not required. The side quests typically got you rupees and new weapons, also you cant say a game sucks because of its side quests. That's why there called side quests, you dont have to do them. Anyway, thats all the time I have. I got to get back to playing anima crossing new leaf on my Nintendo 3ds.

Yo man, I agree entirely. I can understand that they wanted to create the freedom to be able to go to the final boss straight. But why does that mean destroying the entire world? Why do you need to empty it so you don't break that first idea of freedom? It is absolutely pointless! An intelligent developer could have added layers to the game to access Ganon straight BUT withholding that it is better to get prepared and improve your inventory with classic Zelda weapons that are specific to each dungeon and are the way to destroy specific-themed bosses. And therefore creating an adventure that actually makes you feel like a hero. That was all that was needed! Was it so difficult? That's is Zelda. I hate Eiji Aonuma, he destroyed the Zelda series. Actually, when I read his interviews, I see where the problem is.

one of the big turn offs for me with botw is how theres like 4 enemies you'll find throughout the whole game. Bokoblins, Moblins, Lizalfos, and keese and thats it. The rest of the monsters in the game you have to go out of your way to find to fight. All other games had so many different enemies. Deku Baba, skultula, Like like, redead and so much more. But they threw all of them in the garbage and just chose the 4 most common monsters and then just repaint them to make them stronger.

I would disagree, I feel like there's a similar amount of enemies when compared to other Zelda games (also the Yiga, the various Guardian types, Octorocks, Lynels, Hinoxes, Taluses, Chuchus and Molduga) I don't this Stal monsters count though because they're basically the ReDead/Gizmo equivalent. Personally I think the enemies only fall short with the bosses, while the blights were cool, they were very repetitive and their designs were similar.

I kind of want to disagree because there are a couple other enemies, but yeah none of them are unique in any way. Lizalfos and bokoblins function pretty similarly except their 2 or 3 very basic moves that the lizalfos have, their water projectile and a tail whip which is basically just a horizontal sword swipe. In addition to that, moblins are basically the same as bokoblins, just with a bigger hit box and slightly farther reaching attacks. Chuchus, Keese, and Octoroks all seem pretty different on the surface, but in reality, they're all just annoyances that you dispatch with a single bomb, arrow, or weapon strike. If you think about their function and not about their visual design, they're literally all the same with the only real difference being that chuchus are basic melee versions, keese are flying versions, and octoroks are ranged versions.

I agree 100% with all of your complaints. No lie, I decided to flat out ignore all of these flaws and try to find the fun. But it becomes too drawn-out and spacious as you explore and things rapidly fall apart. The journey arc is nonexistent. Nothing is that motivating, and if you can't constantly motivate yourself, there's no adventure. But then you start motivating yourself with goals that aren't remotely important against what's supposed to be the goal of saving Zelda, like playing with the physics or getting some quality-of-life upgrade that you don't really need.

The only motivations I have in the game are like “right, let’s climb to the top of this mountain and then fly off!” The main focus isn’t the main story (which is literally just 4 optional easy, repetitive dungeons, optional memory cutscenes and then Hyrule Castle). It’s just sort of a distraction game to have fun shield surfing, climbing mountains and flying. Which is all fun and all but like... There’s no sense of adventure or progress! No sense of dread, all the npcs seem happy enough, it’s like everyone just forgets the threat of Ganon. It’s like Animal Crossing, it’s enjoyable for the aspects of exploring and walking around just chilling. Except this is meant to be Zelda! It’s missing a good story with progression and a sense of urgency... Why have a huge gorgeous world if there’s nothing in like 80% of the areas? Just shrines. Which are kinda boring. It’s fun rock climbing and stuff, then just flying away... But the whole time I’m just flying like “ok this is nice and all... But what’s happening with the story?” I love Twilight Princess, like you get cool scenes with Midna almost dying, protecting the kids etc. and occasionally seeing Zant as a reminder of the villain’s existence. There’s always motivational points like finding mirror shards, temples with unique bosses. You get Midna with you, you can be a wolf etc... Botw is just, there’s no memorable cutscenes. No real progression. You don’t feel part of this world, definitely not part of the story. Other Zelda game stories feel more first person perspective. Botw just feels like it’s in third person perspective, the story plays in cutscenes alone like Link’s just watching a movie.

@Zer0dog nah there is it's just kind of watered down. I was concerned that it had to do with the switch port. That they made it easier for quick spurts of play undocked. Also the port might have made the game less dense and polished. The quality of the dungeons is all over the place.

Over 100 hours, all shrines, all Derp Beasts, 800+ Koroks...this game is Ubisoft. The world is really fun to explore. What's funny is the design of the open world was out-sourced. Nintendo didn't make the best part of the game. Combat is clunky, shrines are for 8 year old kids, no dungeons, boss fights are laughable, side quests are pitiful (find X and get 100 rupees). When you have to make weapons breakable to make combat "interesting", you've done fucked up. There's nothing this game does that isn't done far better in other titles. Extremely little payoff for all the exploration. I had fun but man the GOAT status claims makes me wonder what game everyone else played. So much for everyone having open world fatigue...

Also combat lacks rythm and telegraphy is non-existent. As a Monster Hunter player, rythm and telegraphy are incredibly important when fighting a boss. There's no such thing in BOTW, the dodge mechanic is incredibly inconsistent and the parry is not worth the risk.

When I think of a Zelda game I think of things like Dungeon items, heart pieces, interesting side quest to get better items, an interesting story, fun boss fights and mini boss fights. This game has none of the above. They tried so hard to do something different that they took everything away from what makes Zelda Zelda and I tried to like this game spent 140 plus hours to get every shrine but for the life of me I cannot go back and play it. The main problem i have with BOTW is the complete lack of growth, one of the things i love most about Zelda games is starting out the game and opening the menu to see all the empty spaces i'll fill with useful items and upgrades through the journey and with BOTW you are given everything you ever get from the start which is fun at first but quickly becomes boring and it also removes entirely the Metroidvania style item/upgrade based progression Zelda games do so well, there's no reason to return to older areas in BOTW because everything can be done with the base equipment. There's also no weight to any items found in the game because their all so temporary which as was said in the video makes it feel useless to explore and do all these optional things when you're just gonna get another breakable item. It's also worth noting that the Souls games are some of my favorite games next to Zelda and i still couldn't get into BOTW even after playing through it twice.

Here's my situation. I got a Switch back around April when they weren't around much and i got 13 games. First one i started with was BotW expecting it to be amazing and to blaze through it in a week or two... it was great at first and then became a chore. The grind for weapons and food, a chore, the grind for korok seeds, a chore... grinding those stupid temples, as bland as they are, utterly uninspired and usually not combat focused at all... a chore. Chore, chore, chore. Even climbing in this game becomes a chore due to the constant rain lol. Which i was able to overlook for a while but with everything else piled on top it's too much. Combat can be largely avoided and i have no incentive to really do much outside of advancing the plot. Which is uninteresting to me. I ended up putting the game on hold for months, just came back, got the Ganon's castle which is pretty much where i left off and i can't bother to grind out better gear, that i know i need. Since a Lyonel just trounced me at the 2nd guard tower lol. I know i have to git gud, but i don't want to bother to go and grind, to git gud... i'm looking at 12 other titles, that i much rather start playing, and this game has already held me back from them for months... so yeah. I might come back, but i doubt it. This isn't the Zelda i fell in love with. Inspired and varied dungeons, combat that's focused and not constantly broken up by... broken weapons/shields and an actual sense of progression. Luigi's Mansion 3 and Links Awakening are a'callin!

Kfc chan I dont like the combat too Bcaus, ok you have various options for weapons This is amazing but, i hate the way that Link use all of this weapons, i feel the animations and the actions of Link its veeeery robotic and repectitive for a modern action game and a bad use of the Hit box that link can be And i hate the "slow way" that he use the majority of the weapons too Look Wind Waker for example, Links is very agressive with the sword, have a good hitbox, yours atacks are fast and the best, your animations feel like a live character with your own way to fight, feel like you play as a live character and less a robotic puppet repeating same robotics animarions Its like the combat action of Link in BOTW Are designed for a top-view zelda games, the way that he use the sword for exemple remember me a lot the way that link use a sword on the legend of zelda nes,MC,4S,LTTP etc etc etc the same basic horizontal slash ( but with a little spin at the end) The spear, give the same feel to me, the just doing the same thing, atack foward, never mind. Even the bokoblins use pole weapons in a more smart way spinning the weapon around to atack in area. The more organic way that he use weapons is the Club, the animation of club is very organic but even dont have sense the club have a so fast and organic animation and feel enough, and the club action fits more with the sword than the club itself... the big weapons like big swords and axe have a good animations but logically, they are much slow, i like how the bow are fast on botw, and have different types of arrows that can make a combo with, but i cant use the bow in a 3rd person with Z targeted a enemy in a close combat situation like the pasts 3D zeldas... why? if anyone want a good exemple about what i talk about Kingdom hearts 2, Nier automata(just animations not feel in this case..) or just the Wind Waker have good exemple of what i talk about and this influence a lot on the combat feel of the game...

BoTW did two things so wrong that it's unplayable to me: 1. Quantity over quality. Yeah the map is big and there's tons of things to do, but it's shallow. Majora's Mask has far fewer things to do in comparison, but I care about all of them and find them interesting. 2. Futuristic tech. It just completely breaks the world for me. Turns me off. The old games had soooooo much more content, that felt spread out but in so much more of a smaller overall area. Botw is huge, massive and outshines all other zeldas maybe combined as far as size, and theres virtually nothing in it, no substance, content or even much of story. I'm so glad to finally find a critique of the game. I much prefer critiques of my favourite games rather than positive video essays. Although botw was not a game to my liking at all. What I found most annoying is that I can't actually play to my style, but that was my initial impression of this game. Much like most games that are presented to be an Open-World RPG, the player is usually able to choose to be stealthy or offensive. BOTW however has you playing a certain style due to its weapon mechanics. Some people say it is to increase the difficulty and is there to make you think about how you should approach enemies, but like you said, the weapon system doesn't increase difficulty, it just induces frustration. It doesn't force me to strategise, it forces me to do extra tedious work. I think it should have just been a choice to have weapons break, or at least have them last longer with some repair system. I don't like the fact that I'm spending the few hours I have in my day or week in a game walking around (since your horse can only traverse over a certain type of terrain) and trying to find weapons or korok seeds. I wanted to get straight into this game, fight the enemies to gain materials or equipment, and advance the story until the very end; not pause every 20 minutes because after fighting the 3rd enemy camp three of my weapons and both my bows broke so I have to go grind.

I think the breakable weapons are a great addition because it makes you think more critically on which fights to choose. If you encounter a silver or gold boko camp that has lots of weapons, you don't actually have to fight. You can for the satisfaction of it, but if you're weak then you can also go to a cooking pot and brew a stealth potion, or wait for them to go to sleep and steal the weapons, or hit them with an electric chuchu. All of these can get you weapons really easily., and it's just scratching the surface. While playing I don't think I ever felt the need to grind because I just got things along the way. I'd collect korok's I see while travelling, and over time they add up so that you have a substantial amount of extra weapons slots. I'd cook a couple different meals everytime I saw a pot, depending on the situation. Also I personally found scouting camps to find the most efficient way a lot more fun then tedious. Analyzing all the possible ways to get the weapons and run, or to knock out some boko's with a boulder, etc. There are a lot of creative ways to solve problems in this game, and you unlock more the further you progress in the game. Best advice I can give is probably play this game like a minimalist. Instead of hording good weapons, use them and try and obtain new one's when they break. Using pro mode also adds another level of immersion. This is all just my opinion though.

I've never played a zelda game before so I might not be in any position to give my opinion on a zelda game but I must say, this game is repitive, empty and grindy as hell, the combat mechanics are wack too. I've literally played about a dozen hours and I feel like quiting it. The story doesn't interest me in the slightest bit neither, mainly because there's hardly any voice acting and I get tired of constantly reading texts like it's a game from the 90's instead of 2017. The shrines although at times can be enjoyable it bothers me that they're all just quick little puzzles and maybe a few battles at their best. It would've been far more interesting if the shrines were used as side quests with side characters and storylines that have an effect on the main story. This game is at best average for me.

I know everyone's entitled to their opinion, and I'm not trying to fight that; I don't want you to think I'm attacking you because I disagree. But, honestly, I believe you're letting some very small things get in the way of what Nintendo has done here. You can't get hung up on the breakable weapons design decision if you're really willing to give the game a chance. You just can't. If you get an unbreakable weapon too early, that design element alone would ruin the balance of the game, which is designed to make an open world that you feel you need to live off of. Remember in Wind Waker, how you could use the weapons some enemies dropped? That's an interesting idea, and it encourages exploration. How long did anyone really use that feature? Only until they had their permanent weapon, and once they had that, the entire feature of using enemy weapons pretty much became pointless. That's okay in Wind Waker, because it was far more "traditional" in design, and you were indeed going to spend most of your time in dungeons doing the same thing as in most other Zelda games. But in BotW, you aren't. That's the point. You're supposed to be playing a modern version of the original Zelda, but with one difference: instead of being given a single weapon to use from the beginning, you're given many, and you're encouraged to switch them up. Weapons are plentiful, and I'm not trying to call you out or anything, but they don't break in two hits. You just can't use them forever, because you're supposed to be enjoying the process of finding new things and applying them to your adventure. Speaking of which, what is the point of dungeons? To beat a boss? To check off a percentage of the game so we can feel like we're closer to the end? Let me ask this: are you in a hurry to beat the game? If so, why? Maybe it's frustrating to you, as a reviewer, to be so far away from the "end" of the game, since you want to give as fair of a review as possible. But BotW is all about sheer play value, and after doing some of the many shrines in the game, I've found that I came away with what I value most from dungeons: new items, which allow greater exploration opportunities. Even if every shrine doesn't hold such a thing, I can't help but think of them as stars from Mario 64, and anticipate the collection (or in this case, completion) of each one, and what that will ultimately reward the player with. The overworld is the star in this game, and the dungeons are the highlights scattered across it to lure us in different directions and show us new things along the way. Isn't it refreshing that the overworld isn't just the space between dungeons now? As for their locations, the game is no more vague than the original (less so than the original, I believe), though you can't just swing a sword at everything between you and your destination. Sometimes, sneaking is the way to go. Sometimes, a trap is in order. Sometimes, the power of an enemy is a clue that you shouldn't be in that place yet, or maybe there's more to the situation than meets the eye. I personally find it exciting that the game may throw something at me that I can't handle in some areas; that element validates the freedom of the experience. Otherwise, if I always know where I'm supposed to be, and I can always handle every enemy there with whatever is in my pockets, then the game is linear, period, and it may as well take place in one long, straight hallway, in terms of game design. The length of this message is already well out of control, so I'll just add that the game really, really rewards exploration. A lot of the problems you mentioned have really fun and creative solutions out there, and honestly, I'm surprised you weren't having enough fun to anticipate what you would find next. You honestly sounded like you wanted the experience toned down, not trimmed; not as though it were convoluted, but that you prefer a simpler experience because you can't be bothered. If your goal is, "where's my unbreakable sword?" because you don't think the game starts until you have it, and your thought process is, "where's the next dungeon? It's been 15 hours, I should be at dungeon 5 by now," then your focus isn't where it should be; you're not enjoying the world at large, because you're stuck on a pet peeve. And you're rushing yourself, too. I really hope you'll come back to this game in the future and give it another chance. But, if you don't want to, it's your call; no use torturing yourself. And just for the sake of clarity, once again, I hope you or anyone in agreement with you won't take anything I said here as some sort of personal attack. This was meant as little more than a friendly rebuttal; I really do enjoy your channel and content.

As a longtime fan of LoZ, I'm sorry to say that I have to agree with Comshaq about BotW. Even since the first NES LoZ game (IMHO), the meat and potatoes of the series has always been about finding dungeons, solving them and then figuring out how to best beat the boss with what you've acquired so far... Not only did they invert the premise of what made a zelda game for the most of us a zelda game and made it the focal point (Field Exploration), but they also amped it up to 11 by making the Fields portion bigger than any story driven sandbox game has ever had, worse yet, they seemed to have made the dungeoning aspect of it as an afterthought, to throw a bone or two (or in this case 120) to us LoZ fans that enjoyed it for the puzzle solving, Dungeon crawling aspect of it... TBH, just put any other sandbox character into this game (like Steve from Minecraft or the Skyrim guy for example), and you honestly wouldn't be able to tell the difference, as BotW is just a modern Sandbox game with LoZ characters, that's it... Does that make it a bad game, absolutely not, but it just feels like it's trying too hard to appease the Sandbox Crowd, and tbh, some of it's design decisions could've definitely been handled better... To refute your reffutal of Breakable weapons for example, while it's true that it would make exploration a lot more mandatory, inventory management in a sandbox game makes or breaks it, and Nintendo could've DEFINITELY made it far less tedious than it currently is in the beginning. First off, plenty of other games have durability, even Nintendo's older Fire Emblem games did, but the durability on weapons in these games were just far more fair to the player, Adding challenge is one thing but wasting the player's time is another (making weapons break in a few hits and forcing you to carry 10 copies of said weapon, and constantly having to open a menu up to replace your broken weapons heavily breaks immersion, even if you could quick select a new weapon, having such low durability is just outright bad, not even Deadrising was this unforgiving)... Not only do weapons break very easily at first in BotW, but your initial inventory is abysmal, this within itself is just poor design. If they were to AT LEAST allow you to merge items of the same type to a high enough hardcap or if they started you off with MUCH more weapon inventory then maybe starting off wouldn't be as painful as it obviously is, and this turn off may very well cost the game in future sales, despite it's high praise... Lack of direction wasn't much of an issue in previous LoZ games prior to this one simply because the worlds were far more limited and even if you got lost, it didn't take too long to figure out where everything was. Since BotW is supposedly even bigger than skyrim, and it decides NOW to completely leave it up to the player where they wish to go a la Shadow of the Colossus, this may very well make it a difficult game to finish for the majority of the people who bought it due to those long treads of wasteland and getting RNG screwed by the weather (Imagine if Wind Waker's Oceans were currently as big as BotW, people would lose interest in the game very quickly and probably not even finish it, hell, Nintendo ended up shortening the endgame collect a thon by 5 in the HD Re-release due to how unbelievably tedious it was, even with this change, Wind Waker is STILL my 2nd most disliked LoZ game that I've played). I really don't understand why Nintendo has decided NOW to 100% abandon the casual player ship and make their games as hardcore as the 100s of survival games plaguing the industry currently, but I foresee this as a bad move tbh, and I hope this isn't a permanent direction they plan to take with the LoZ franchise, but if it is, then I hope they can at the very least heavily refine BotW's formula by adding less tedious inventory management, less pointless field to trod through and more meaningful/satisfying dungeon crawling...

I completly agree with you. It's all quite minature problems that really aren't problems. They are taking elements from some of our favourite zelda games and put it in one. The weapons it would have been worth mentioning that you get weapons so damn frequently them breaking isn't a problem at all. By the time one of mine is ready to break I've already found another to replace it. It's only the larger bosses that take alot more of a beating that the breaking becomes a problem. Even then, I was going against a really high HP Lynel yesterday, I had 6 weapons break on me during this, it was exciting as hell and put me on the edge of my seat.. He was almost dead and I had very few weapons left and it was making me excited Litterally the only problem with this game that I've found that actually becomes a problem at some points. Is not being able to call your horse from where you last left it like every other zelda game. To recover your horse from long distances you need to go to a stable. Yes 80% of the time there is no need for a horse, but that 20% of the time having a flute or even the wistle letting you call your horse would have made those moments alot better.

Well that's were you faultered. BotW was never meant to be a traditional Zelda game. If you listen to the behind the scenes stuff, Aonuma said that they knew they wanted to create something entirely knew from the beginning so early on in development they brought in a brand new Dev team that never worked on Zelda to get fresh opinions. Whenever a traditional Zelda element came up the new team would ask "Why is this in the game? I know it's tradition, but why are we putting it in?" And if Aonuma couldn't come up with an answer better than "It's tradition" they removes it from the game, and replaced it with something else that fit the world and tone better.

I absolutely agree with everything you said. In my opinion non linearity is overrated. Maybe it's cool for people that replay games over and over. But looking at the size of this game I think there won't be many people that replayed it even twice. If you play through a game just once, why would you care if you can choose to go into Dungeon B first or if the game sends you to Dungeon A first. For me the progression is what made Zelda games great. The feeling of getting out of a dungeon with a new item, that opens up new areas was just great game design. I even put 60 hours into BotW, hoping I would get to the point where the game clicks with me, and finished 3 of the divine beasts, but I also never felt as if I've made any real progress. It's because from the start everything was open for me.

First of all, I appreciate you found into the franchise :) In my opinion, BotW isn't really a zelda game with its differencies to the traditional games. If you do not like the main part of a games franchise, then maybe it's just not for you. That game is way to different from the original concept of the kind of genre games like zelda games are in. There are just some parts that belong in such a game like music, dungeons, epic bossfights, and most importantly a linear story. It is what makes a game a zelda game. Most fans of the series don't like such major changes from a game series that had been the same since 31 years. For me as a zelda fan myself, I'm just able to say that I'm not supporting such major changes. Open World wasn't a choice from Nintendo, it was a trend. In my opinion are the old games better because of their standarts. Maybe BotW2 will do better - But have a nice day tho ;)

Great review. So much more negatives that can be added in but just to name a small one that not many people mention - the health bar. I used to love fighting enemies and not knowing when they were going to die. Having to sit there slashing an enemy a million times while watching its health slowly deplete absolutely destroyed the fun.

Gabriel Gibson well... to be fair... Nintendo does what they think is gonna be the best decision. There’s gonna be a sequel to this game. Obviously, the majority loved this game and business says that this is good. So to answer your question: not too soon.

I tried very hard to like this game. But I can't. I don't like the breakable weapons, I don't like the shitty copy-pasted shrines that all look the same, I don't like the boring and mostly forgettable NPCs (it honestly feels like Nintendo weren't even trying here), I don't like the empty overworld, I don't like the futuristic kitsch (laser shooting robots? really???) in what is supposed to be a medieval fantasy adventure, I don't like the bizarre control scheme and the learning curve that comes with it, I don't like the complete and utter lack of interesting treasures to find or side quests to complete (yay, more Korok seeds), I don't like the shitty combat, and I absolutely abhor the lack of real dungeons.

I know this is an old one.. but one thing that bugged me was pretty much how useless mounts were. Was so excited when I got my mount because I was like now I can traverse this massive land and maybe get things done in a reasonable amount of time... but then hey, I gotta climb this mountain and my mount can't come with me.. so once I get to the top of said mountain or go to the other side.. I can't get my mount until I see a stable again. Literally happened the other day when I hopped on a mount and 3 minutes later had to ditch it because my objective required me to glide to it, so was on foot for the rest of the way.

It took me almost a year of multiple tries to get into it. Kinda like back when Morrowind came out. But when I figured it out, I fell in love with it. Like Morrowind. This is the first game, since Morrowind, that I literally want to explore every inch of. But I hear you. I actually didn't like all those things at first too, but now I just set a different goal every time I play and go out and have fun. If I find something like a shine, that's fun too. But that definitely takes a certain type. So I hear you, but I also love it.

First I love your Majoras Mask shirt! Second..(This is just one, of many opinions.) I agree with everything you've stated in this video. Most fans that have said "Omg..you haven't played BOTW? You have to play it! Its the best game ever!!" Have been fairly young or (rarely) older gamers that have a prefered style to BOTW. Though this was not an issue, it started getting old hearing this every time I entered a gaming shop. I personally feel they squeezed the life out of BOTW in advertising, toys, commercials, over ratings, plushies, keychains, bags, ammibos (If this is even spelled correctly..), ect. I could not walk into a toy store, Wal-Mart or Best Buy without seeing tons of BOTW merchandise on shelves in the beginning. Some defiant kids crying out in the stores saying "Mommy please I want BOTW arrow toy set, oh and this figure of Link..please Mommy? I really need a new Wii Switch, for BOTW, Oh look this BOTW toy set, look at this game cover for BOTW!....BOTW, BOTW, BOTW" (Nearly every day, after its release at the mall.) Initially I was very excited about the game coming out, anticipating well before then about its open world and graphics. Watched tons of its gameplay reviews and after a few hours I literally fell asleep. I then woke up the next day and decided to spend my savings on a PS4 and re-purchase an N64 system, as well all the classic games like MM and OOT. There is nothing wrong with those who love this game, as we all share an opinion and different tastes. This is in no means an attack or backlash to those who are huge fans. Unfortunately, similar to what this video explains.. This was the very reason I could not take interest in this game, with some other exceptions. Regardless of the amount of effort in attempting to change my feelings on its setup. In my opinion it didnt grab my attention, neither pulled me into its storyline, the voice acting was annoying to me and it just didnt feel like a Zelda game. For example of what makes it so iconic, is the underlining feelings that quickly rush in after switching on an N64 and hearing the sounds of Epona's hooves clicking or the piano music, even the Happy Mask Salesman's creepy laugh...I didn't get that from BOTW at all. Nothing that stuck out to make it different in connection to Zelda. It felt very crop and paste when including those add-ons. The only thing I can say that was fascinating in the game was that they included a Temple of Time..thats it..

ABOUT BREAKABLE WEAPONS: I've always feel that as a concept is good BUT as a Zelda game feature feels horrible to me, I've always enojoy to collect everything possible in a Zelda, and weapons have always be a major part of those collectables, now that you give us a ton of weapons they make It temporaly. Agreed on all opinions. BotW is the first Zelda game I've purchased since Link's Awakening in the 90s. I loved LA, and critics and friends hyped this game so much - I actually got very excited to play it. I've never been more bored with a video game.

Witcher 3 had massive cities, backwater towns, sprawling forests, imposing mountains, truly horrible looking swamps, tons of varied and intelligent monsters (you'd never find drowners away from water, and ghouls were never far from a slew of corpses), smart quests, and even a handful of well written NPCs. The inventory is limited, but expands in a realistic fashion. BotW feels abandoned, Witcher 3 feels alive. I liked finding clues and solving crimes, tracking monsters and caring for the gear I created with the blacksmith I helped out a few times.

As you I avoided any trailer, gameplay, videos, articles or spoilers of this game for years before playing it (it was hard, specially watching videos of KZbin about gaming) and now that I finished the game I can say that I was greatly disappointed... I was way too hyped for all what many people told me about this game. It had great things, for sure, and I put 200h on it, the open world was very cool and it makes you want to explore but... Small silly main-dungeons that were just like slightly bigger shrines and had all the same annoying "ancient" theme, generic and forgettable Bosses, quickly breakable weapons, not enough fast ways of transport in such a big map and the awful music absolutely destroyed this game for me. I suggest Justin Berube's "Why Zelda Bresth of the wild is a Failure to the Zelda Franchise" article from Nintendo World Report where he covers 99% of every single complain I had about this game. It's not coincidence that most of the players I know that loved this game barely had played any other Zelda game before, some weren't even used to play videogames... Although most of Zelda's TRUE fans I know had similar complaints.
