I bought Mike’s book on new tractor purchases before I bought my tractor, and I can say with certainty that it saved my way more than the price of the book. This was pre-Covid, so the tractor shortage will make a difference. I was rewarded again recently when I bought a canopy from Mike’s website and got a credit for the book purchase. Thanks for posting Mike, and keep the videos coming.

All good information, Mike. Machinery Pete is another good place to check prices, both dealer asking and auction. I would never settle for a tractor smaller (less power or frame size) than I wanted.

Great info Mike. Another aspect of machine choice is if your machine work requires machine specs of a 40hp or more, don't settle for anything less. A smaller tractor will have to work harder and/or longer to accomplish the same task. This equals greater wear and tear on your machine, which will end up costing more time and money in the long run.

Great advice. I am a first time tractor buyer and do an incredible amount of research on just about everything I buy. This was also new for me since I’ve always lived in the city. With only 28 acres I needed a tractor. After watching many of your videos that help me choose a compact Kubota MX 4800. You help me determined what my needs are not my wants. This was a perfect fit and I could not be happier. Thanks again for all your excellent videos.

As to Jerry's question: if you want a 40hp, hang out for a 40hp. Most people find they would like just a little more hp than they tractor they buy has, but if you settle for one that has around 1/2 what you were originally wanting, then every time you go out and turn the key, look at a 30hp+ implement or want just a little more out of it, you'll kick yourself for missing out on those 14 extra ponies and be out of pocket quite a few $$ trading up. A few months wait isn't a lot in the overall scheme of things, even of you got a contractor in to do the urgent jobs now and put the others you want to do on hold, paying a guy will be cheaper than the loss on a tractor you're not happy with. I see lots of ads for used tractors because the owner has traded up to a bigger one, never the other way around.

TractorHouse is great! They also publish a free magazine with tractors and equipment for sale. The magazine can be tough to find but I can usually find a copy at my local farm supply store. I pick it up just to see if there's anything interesting in it. A few months ago, that free magazine ended up costing me quite a bit of money because I found a Farmall 1568 that I just couldn't live without! It's in my shop now for a "cosmetic restoration". It runs and operates flawlessly (luckily, nobody ever tried to put a turbo on this one) but, the paint, decals, etc. definitely have seen better days. Normally, I only look for A-C stuff to restore since Persian Orange is mainly what we ran. But, we also had a 1568 on our farm when I was growing up and, with those dual stacks, it always looked like a hot rod to me.

Hey Mike! Im watching from Sweden, and I like the videos alot, very informative! Its a little shame that you only focus on small gardentractors though. I guess its your career that influenced that choice. But I would like to hear about the John Deere 8R series or the Case Steigers, the money behind it and how most farmers pay for those

We had a fortunate experience last year. A friend of a friend had a New Holland workmaster 25 with 40 hours he wanted to sell. CNH charged a small fee (seems like 150 or 250) to transfer his zero interest loan to us. It still had 5 months of warranty that transferred too.

Hey Mike, I know it’s not your current topic but just drove by a burned out backhoe. Question: Does carrying a fire extinguisher help protect from a disaster and if so what type of fire extinguisher should a new operator purchase? Maybe that’s a video from the past or future video??? Thanks.

I would recommend if you are not sure on a certain tractor why not go rent one or ask the dealer if you can demo it for a few hours first. I know in this market the demo is hard but allot a good dealers do have used tractors or rentals that they sell. Again I think this brings it back to the point to make sure you have a good dealer as well as what tractor your buying as well.

I'm at a case dealership at this time being low on inventory might be a little bit different. Bc this time its not just the tractors. We sell Case,exmark, stihl, grasshopper,bushhog and others. It's all manufacturer's and now parts becoming unavailable. I hope things start getting better.

I can't imagine "settling" for less than what I need. A tractor is a tool, not a "luxury" like an automobile. If I require a 40 hp tractor or more, then that's what I'm going to buy. Getting anything less than what I NEED is going to almost always result in failure, disappointment and lost money. As far as a late model tractor with low hours, I would do due diligence and look at all of the important things. Engine oil, transmission/hydraulic oil, look around grease fittings (you can tell if it's been serviced), etc. The thing about tractors that makes them unique is that they could be older with a lot of hours, yet still be very useful. I own and use a 1979 model Ford tractor with over 2500 hours on a weekly basis. I keep up with the maintenance on it (regular oil changes, GREASE, filters, etc.) and it still performs and does what I need it to do.

Bought a Max 26 xlt in May hate the hydrostatic rocker peddle, no step to get in and the worst design on a seat! Spinning it to use the BH is back breaking if your going back and forth digging then picking up using FEL, do it a few times you'll know what I mean! Live and learn thought I did enough research but after a few months I know what I should have bought!

Back in 06 We bought a home with 4.5 acres and felt we needed a small tractor. So, we bought a JD 2305 with a front loader and backhoe, belly deck, and upgrade the tires. Well, $26k later it was delivered. 3 years later with 54hrs I called the dealer to find out the current price and was told $6.700. WOW!!! what a hit, I still have it, runs great, 443hrs ad happy with it, however, I think I should have done more homework when looking to buy.

Well last spring I bought a new tractor through the internet. The tractor was delivered and I was very disappointed in how unstable it was. I contacted the salesman and told him there was no way that tractor was going to work for me. They brought me the upgraded tractor I requested. Took the other one back. I paid exactly the price of the 2nd tractor. No loss on my part. I was quite impressed as I was expecting to lose money on the deal. Great dealer and experience for me. This was at the beginning of the pandemic so that may have some to do with it. Anyway I`m happy and feel lucky!

I bought a New Holland Workmaster 25 brand new this year. Immediately found out that it wasn't going to work. High range was useless. Medium range required full throttle. Low range was good but obviously tops out at walking speed. Nobody wants to work at walking speed. So then I took it back the same month to get the same tractor with 40 HP engine. I ended up losing $1,500 on the swap, but I couldn't be happier.

I am new to the tractor world, only I year. Bought a Mahindra 1626 last June. I like the size tractor I have for my place, I just don't like the mom and pop dealer that I purchased from. They are convenient in that they are only 6 miles away from me but Every time I call or stop in to purchase something or inquire about an implement that I am thinking of buying they act like I am a bother. I already caught the sales lady who worked with me in a lie, twice. I went to other dealers of other brand tractors before buying and New Holland about 30 miles from me, the salesman there didn't seem interested at all in working with me so I left. Tried LS but they are basically New Holland and that dealer was over an hour away. Talked to someone about TYN and really liked the salesman and he wanted to give me a deal on what all I wanted but his dealership was 4 hours away. If I could get out of this tractor I got now, which I like, I would only because I can't trust my local dealer to be honest and forthright with me.

Mike, love your videos. Your advise about losing 30% trading in a late model low hour tractor isn’t always the case. I bought a new John Deere 3033R six months ago. I soon discovered that it was too small. My salesman at my local Deere dealer took very good care of me when I told him I wanted to trade in my new 3033R for a larger 4052R, last month. I got a good price on the newer tractor, while only losing $2K on the 3033R. A costly mistake, but it could have been much worse. I took advantage of Deere’s 0% APR financing on both tractor’s, so transferring the loan in-house through my salesman was seamless.

Why was it too small? I’m considering a 3046R.

Yes I believe that in general non covid eras, Mike’s reasoning is spot on. However, with the covid and other factors supply effects of no or very limited products available, a pre or early covid purchased tractor is a super hot item that many dealership will be happy to give the trade-in a good value. I know some folks that were talked into a smaller tractor than they wanted, that have actually gotten full value back out of there machines as there were folks that had need on that size tractor, but no available tractors. I believe this will be a short term situation, just as I believe that new vehicles (cars and trucks) will flood the market in the near future and the price structure on those will be lowered (buyers market).

You always take rebates and pay the 3% interst rate. Pay it off early and you'll be ahead. Say you get 2100 in rebates even at 3% you usually don't pay the 2100 in interest.and you don't get shafted on trade in upgrade etc.....by taking the 0% interest.

Hey, just subscribed so sorry if I ask something that's been asked a thousands times already. Instead of asking what brand I should buy, is there one I should steer away from? I realize that all brands are going to have there problems here and there and that service, to me at least, is the key to longevity. Anyway, the reason I ask is that I am looking at LS because of their price points and have seen videos with owners showing continual problems and others who don't. I know LS is not the high end like Kubota and Deere on the spectrum but, the pricing is hard to beat. Sorry for such a long comment but, like so many others, I'm new to the tractor world and would like to shorten my choices out of the gate to reduce my gray hairs over this if possible. Thanks.

You're a pretty sharp guy sir but I'll tell you another way of finding out really fast what a tractor or piece of equipment is worth. Call your local banker and find out how much money he will loan for it. The loan value is what something is worth the bank will not loan any more than it's worth
@mark-wn5ek3 жыл бұрын
Yup....where the problem starts is with your dealer. Who goes and buys a new car/truck without first test driving it? No car dealership I have ever dealt with in my 60+ years has refused to hand over the keys and say...try it out, some even said take it home, keep it over night, think about it. Not the first tractor dealer has ever said...let me deliver the one you like and you try it out, plow a little, use the loader see if it suits you...you're about to spend 40 grand, and you need to be sure first. Nope....there it sits Killjoy, you can fire it up, drive around the lot..see how the bucket lifts...but you'll not turn any dirt with it....once you sign the papers you're...uh..stuck. If it does work out, no apologies, no nothing...but they sure know how to depreciate them overnight BTDT. The common attitude is, it's got green paint...how could it possibly not be perfect ! Caveat Emptor certainly applies to any tractor purchase.

There is a significant shortage of computer chips. This is causing problems in almost every industry, including the automotive industry and, I'm sure, the tractor industry. There are only a handful of producers that make them and they are so backlogged there is no estimate of when they will be able to meet the current demand. I don't see this resolving anytime soon.
@hoyks13 жыл бұрын
The issue is that over the years vehicle parts manufactures screwed the computer chip manufacturers right down on price, then with COVID and the expected down turn on vehicle sales they then cancelled orders left and right. Home electronics orders soared, so they switched production to them and the vehicle sales didn't tank as they predicted. So then the vehicle manufacturers went back to the chip guys and got told "Get to the end of the line buddy!" As Mike said, once that shakes its self out, there will be an over supply and hopefully reasonable prices again. Where I am, even 5 year old tractors are going for new tractor money.
