I Don't NEED a Nikon Z8 But I Want One - Comparing Old With New.

In this weeks video I compare the huge leap in technology between my Nikon Z7 and my ancient D40, all in the hope that it will make my desire for a Z8 go away.
Having some serious gear envy about the new Nikon Z8 I decide that the step up in features isn't worth the money... in other words, I'm skint and cannot afford one!
To try and justify my decision in my own head I compare my latest to my oldest Nikon cameras.
Will I be able to take anything worthwhile on the D40? Is 6 megapixels enough? Will Santa bring me a Z8 for Christmas?

I agree with everything said in this video. Old cameras are ace. I still have my trusty plastic film camera from 1975 that cost 10p and 40 Bazooka Joe wrappers. When I attached it to my authentic bionic eye (from Look-in magazine), it created a zoom lens capable of taking photos that even Boots refused to develop. Nice.

Quite frankly Sherbz, that is the best comment I’ve ever had on KZbin. Having said that, my mind now turns to thinking… “what was he taking photos of, that were so scandalous that Boot refused them” Oh, and do you have any copies of the prints I can have a look at? 🙂👍🏻

Interesting comparison. Imagine the difference with the Z8 and Z7. I just upgraded from the Z7ii to the Z8 and the difference is noticeable already. Nice video Gary, thanks.

What an oddly specific title for me and a nice unexpected blast from the past. My D60 (basically the same as the D40) died many years ago but I was surprised how well it held up! Using modern mirrorless cameras I really wonder how I managed to shoot weddings on that thing, with a MF AF-D 50mm lens as well. That screen is so tiny!

I fond memories of every camera I’ve owned but when you look back some were just dreadful in comparison to today’s equipment. Still loved the images I took at the time though. Sure glad I didn’t have a mirrorless Nikon before the Z8 came out.😊 Love it and it’s the best do all camera I’ve ever had. Came from a D70, D700 and D800. Did go mirrorless with the Lumix system before this and they are great for less weight. We live in great times for camera technology.

If you are interested only in photos then i believe you wont find the z8 that compelling even though the autofocusing on thr z8 is extremely good. I had a z6 when i bought my z8, i still have the z6 & i'm not going to part with it. For photos i find them both similar except for the resolution. However for videos i think z8 is the best, the raw video looks amazing and i can edit 4.3k60p raw videos on my 7 year old 7th gen intel i5, 8gb ram, 4gb gpu pc!

Ah, never even considered the video specs. That’s a really good point. To be honest though, it’s very rare that I use my Z7 for video as I have separate dedicated vlogging setup. The auto focus on the Z8… now that is the feature I really want 👍🏻

@@garrysugdenphotography i am more than happy with the af of my z6 but the af on z8 is something totally different. I mostly shoot wedding and portraits, i know the limits of the z6 and within its boundaries z6 hasnt failed me. I dont think you'll ever feel the need to upgrade from a z7. I have a tamron 35mm f1.4 on my z6 and the output is divine!

Like you perhaps I'm a sucker for specs so I'm drawn to the Z8 but can't really justify upgrading from the Z7II. For landscape I think the main Z8 benefits are the fully tilting screen and the sensor shield.

Oh, I’d love that sensor shield. Tonight’s shoot has been plagued by dust spots. 🙁
