While you haven't mentioned Olympus/OMS, one thing that flabbergasted me (when I first got the camera) was that the button with the little red dot on it was set to something other than "record movie" as a factory default. It is now set to "record movie." This is not just an OM-1 setting but dates back to several previous models, I believe.

I have a great story RE diopter adjustment. I owned a nature tour charter boat company for many years and took out many people primarily interested in nature and wildlife photography. One day a client complained to me that her expensive Canon 5D MkII was a disappointment to her because the images always looked out of focus. I immediately suspect the diopter focus was the problem and asked her to hand me the camera. Sure enough when I looked through the viewfinder everything was blurred. a check of the diopter setting revealed it was way out of adjustment so I set it to my vision and handed it back to the woman. Wow! she exclaimed! You fixed it! I explained to her what the adjustment was for and added that it was important to set it for your particular vision and on we went with our 3 hr boat trip. I did notice that she kept fooling with the diopter setting throughout the trip but just figured that, like me, she was a perfectionist and was obsessed with getting it set perfectly. Only a few days later did it finally occur to me that the poor woman apparently thought that the diopter needed to be reset for every photo! The lesson in all this is "Read the camera manual from cover to cover, or stick to simple auto cameras that don't require much in the way of settings!

I like you. Your approach to the subject of photography is very clear and easy to digest. I have been taking photos for a long time before the digital age. What I like about Bridge and DSLR's cameras is that you save money, lots of money. Your computer becomes your darkroom. Photos that are bad can be learned from then deleted. I still remember the cost of having your shots developed, then returned to you to see all the mistakes you'd made in camera settings, wasted photos and money. Not so today. New subscriber!

A minor addendum to setting #8 (diopter adjustment) - When focusing the diopter, use the viewfinder markings (reticle, guides, etc.) as a reference to verify focus. Using the image may be inaccurate if the lens isn't focused exactly right. Once the guidelines are correct and the lens is in focus, both will be visually sharp. Great video.

This video is a must for anyone who is starting out with a digital camera. Absolute beginners might want to hit pause and take notes. You shouldn't simply rely on presumably "ignorable" [I'm talking to you, B&H.] default settings or, at minimum, fail to have an understanding of their works and ways. The master teacher gives you a running start here.

Congratulations, Simon, to the silver plaque! Well deserved. Those settings are pretty much the same that I tend to find quickly and change to my likings. First and foremost: BBF. I'd be lost without it. I might need to add a custom set up with it off though, since I don't get the expected result when attaching the Timer Remote Controller - more testing needed, and maybe even more reading of manuals. Current body is the first I have with GPS, so I have tried having that turned on a few times, but I find that it sucks the juice out of the batteries more than anything. On the same theme I have set the camera's Image Review to Off.

Another good setting to apply (if your camera requires it) is 'release shutter without lens,' or 'shoot without lens' something similar. This is what you need to apply if you shoot vintage or full manual lenses. On most Canon DSLR full frames, this setting is not an option because it will automatically default to "shoot without lens." I shoot with a lot of 60+ year old DKL mount lenses when I "zone focus".

I would add that JPEGs are better if you need to print quickly. There are wedding on which you want to sell photos, and there will be a lot of photos. Culling and editing them in RAW would be much slower then just working JPEG. That being said, my go to option is shoot JPEG on one card and RAW on the other. Both have their strenghts, but a lot of YT and IG photographers forget to tell that there is a weakness to RAW, and that is slow workflow
@ECVPodcast
@ECVPodcast Жыл бұрын
Why not shoot in both RAW&JPG? That way when you're looking at the pictures afterwards in Photoshop or whatever Photo editing software you use, if a picture needs some editing you can use the RAW file and the ones that don't keep JPG, however the reason I recommend shooting in the setting where it saves the images in both is for that reason plus if your client wants something fixed you still have the RAW file version of that photo

RAW file processing software is set up for doing fast batch processing. You process one file and synchronise all the others. You can also set up processing recipes. You’re also making your own decisions, not relying on a processing algorithm developed in a Japanese laboratory. Outputting to JPEG is also speedy. You can do hundreds of files in a few clicks.

Wow - I'm not surprised by your mentioned success of reaching >100'000 Subscribers in just 8 month. That's the first video I've seen from you and I'm stoked! You are so humble you make the information accessable even for starters (I guess) but without being boring, slow or to patronize. Great tempo as well, obviously awesome pictures as examples, perfectly edited video... fast, usefull, interesting, valuable - GREAT! I'm a new subscriber now! Thank you.

Simon, thank you for including Fuji cameras in your settings guidelines. It is truly appreciated that you describe settings for more than just Cannon and Nikon cameras. Congratulations on your great KZbin achievement and thank you for your great, helpful videos.

This was a very helpful video. It went well with the metering and autofocus ones I watched. I've practicing what you shared on those ones this morning on the feeder birds. My cameras have three auto focus setting. One shot, ai focus and ai servo. I'm Canadian as well from Hamilton Ontario. I've also lived in Saskatchewan and Alberta. I have not had the opportunity to visit the east coast. As far as prizes you video's are the prize.

I think I have watched most of your videos as far as I can tell, although have missed out an astrophotography one, and maybe an odd other one. I am pleased to see that you mention Fuji settings (I am a Fuji user and so many channels that I follow never refer to Fuji - just Canon and Nikon, and sometimes Sony and OM Systems.) I have leaned SO much from your videos and I keep watching for my notification every week, because I love how you just get straight to the point, explaining the subject/settings clearly and succinctly. Your images and footage are amazing, and spur me on to try and do better all the time. Huge congratulations, very well deserved indeed. And thank you for all you do.

The time setting is equally important when shooting with your partner and combining the photos later. One of us forgot to change the time zone and synchronize our cameras on our last vacation and it made meshing our photos a royal pain. 😅

Done that. Also. your phone will change time automatically if it's connected to the cell network. Make sure the camera is set to the same time if you're taking pictures with both. Sometimes, you need to set the time to the second to give best sync results.

@@terencedwyer8903 I just found out the canon app has an option to set the cameras time to sync to the phone. I’ve been struggling for years to sync my 2 or 3 cameras and phone in the past. You really need it down to the millisecond for certain scenarios.

For focusing I find Back Button Auto-Focus to be significantly better than the preset method which uses the shutter button pressed half way. It offers the best of AF and AF-C depending upon whether the BBAF button is depressed or not. Simon has a separate video describing how to set it up. I highly recommend BBF/BBAF, it's the first thing I set up now on my cameras.

I just got a new camera, the seller said that the flash was broken but I changed some setting in the menu and now it works! It's a Nikon D3200. Much better than my old D3000.

I’m new to this channel. Just made the switch from Nikon D60 to Canon R8. Your videos are perfect for my skill level. In the last week I learned and changed to back button focus, just learned today about adjusting exposure compensation. I programmed my “*” button for emergency action as you suggested. Not sure why but your teaching style suits me very well. Tres bien monsieur 👍

My Moms old Nikon D5100 from 2011 that I'm borrowing lacks most of the settings mentioned, but this doesn't stop me from finding work arounds to make the camera work like I want it to. I've been now using it for nearly a month and it has given me a lot of experience in entry level photography on a DSLR and now looking for a replacement so I can give it back to my mom, I have a few candidates like I've mentioned below Canon 70D, 80D, and 90D ( the last one is more if budget expansion happens to come) Nikon D5300 or D7100 depends on which one I can get better with a lens. I'm more into landscape photography, but I like to explore into portraits, wildlife and sports, I've already been to couple horse riding competitions taking pictures of jumping.

This is why I love my D7000. It''s old but gold. I am looking to upgrade but i cant help feel Im going to miss it when I do because it has so many function buttons that are right to hand when I need and I still get some great quality photos considering its expeed 2 and only 16mega pixels. Im looking at the Nikon range and their DSLR range is a bit lacking at the moment. They still have cameras in production from 2016 so Im going to wait a little bit. Thanks for the little tips though. Its always good to go back to basics every now and then.

Congratulations on 100,000+ subscribers, that's good work and well deserved! One thing, I have on my list is updating/ changing the name of the camera owner/photographer, before I start using a new camera. It's a setting many cameras have, and the information will be part the meta data of each photo shot with the camera, so it's always a good idea to make sure that information is accurate. Especially, if the new camera is a second hand camera, I prefer to have my name in the meta data of my photos rather than the name of a previous owner.
