I can't recall Labor costings on nuclear power, but based on the last unit built and commissioned nuclear power unit at an existing site in the US, I ball parked at cost of about A$385b in todays money to replace existing coal generation in Australia. It would likely be at least a 20-30 year turnaround from the start of site selection to commissioning of the first unit at any site, and the real costs would be well north of the $385b ball park. . We need to forget nuclear, wind, solar and hydro as things that will 'save the day' and extend the life of existing coal plants and build a few more. There is no time to waste in securing the existing coal plants and building a few more. Ball parking the cost to go nuclear isn't hard. Take the nameplate capacity of the existing coal generation and capacity factor for all Australian coal generation combined, and then compare to the Vogtle plants nameplate capacity and capacity factor, then multiply by the cost to get Vogtle 3 up and running.

Australians know solar and wind are NOT a 100% solution to replace coal and gas. We have uranium and we have the geological stability. Labor and the Greens are driving up power prices and this is killing jobs and business. Just take South Australia. It’s a business black hole with the most expensive power prices in the world. Why? You need carbon inclusion to turn iron ore into the various forms of the steel, no amount of 'renewable' technology can change this basic fact, so green steel or green hydrogen for that matter is a complete fallacy. You'd think mining companies would be all for nuclear, sticking to renewables means they still need an array of diesel back up generators running to ensure none of the plant goes down, so that's nearly the same amount of generators running that they'd normally need, plus the fuel and fuel transport costs, plus setting up wind or solar which involves clearing vast amounts of land, installation costs, replacement costs. Sounds like a massive waste of money for nothing, nuclear modules gets rid of backup generators, smaller foot print where the power is needed, no refuelling for decades with reliable energy 24/7. He must be getting massive tax breaks or something...
@johnwoodrow87698 ай бұрын

It has been estimated that 'rewiring the nation' to accommodate all the wind and solar farms to achieve (hopefully) 85% will cost upward of ONE TRILLION DOLLARS or more. That's the equivalent of twenty-five nuclear power station (at the top end cost of 40 Billion each), enough to power the whole of Australia for the next hundred years with near ZERO adverse impact on the environment (both physically and visually). By the time Snowy 2 is finished, and likely to ever produce little, a nuclear power plant could have been built in the same timeframe and cost.

The carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels are largely beneficial. Benefits include increased agricultural yields (main effect) reduced winter heating costs, fewer deaths from hypothermia and postponement of the next glacial maximum. Wind has a low energy density and wind power is centuries out of date . Wind farms only exist due to massive taxpayer funded subsidies. They make no economic sense. They are a colossal waste of taxpayers money and resources (including coal and oil). Solar panels are only economical as a supplement in sunny areas between the 35th parallels. Even in favourable areas there is a major mismatch between peak supply and peak demand. Inclement weather can render them useless for prolonged periods. Nuclear energy and geothermal energy are currently under utilised.

Bowens stance is based on politics not reason. To put it into a modern context, Finland just commissioned Europes largest nuclear power plant (Olkiluoto 3 reactor in May 2023) and the first in 15 years or so - with nuclear making ~ 40% of total electrical energy production. Add to that Sweden, who gave the world Greta Thunberg, ~ 30% of its current electricity generation comes from nuclear and in November 2023 the government announced plans to construct two large-scale reactors by 2035 and the equivalent of 10 new reactors, including small modular reactors, by 2045. Finland and Sweden are two of the highest cost jurisdictions in the world. Australia is host to some of the worlds largest reserves of uranium and we have a geologically stable land mass suitable for the effective long term disposal of the small amounts of nuclear waste produced. Also, everyone seems to forget we have a nuclear reactor in Sydney at Lucas Heights. The ALP appears to have limited capacity to understand STEM based information.
