I have been backpacking for over 20 years as an adult. Over the last 8-10 years the rise of KZbin and backpacking cottage vendors have turned ultralight backpacking into an elite club as people attempt to create a base weight of less than 10 lbs. In this video, I attempt an ultralight trip. I also give six cheat codes on how to get to under 10 pounds. However, these hacks may not be legit. Spoiler alert…I wasn’t able to make it to 10 lbs. Oh well, it was worth a shot. Maybe next time. What are your thoughts about ultralight backpacking and what backpacking gear do you use to reach the elusive "less than 10 lbs. base weight"? Stick around until the end. I have a FULL GEAR LOADOUT that almost got me to ultralight status. Plus, there is a deleted scene at the end of the video which includes one extra GEAR HACK to reach the 10 lb. base weight. #ultralightbackpacking #backpacking #ultralight

99% of those who identify as "ultralight" backpackers lie. It's nearly impossible to have a 10lbs base weight when you're camping in the real world. I was ostracized on the biggest ultralight group on Facebook for asking questions like, if you're not using your poles and they're on your pack, do they figure into your base weight? Do you count your cameras as weight if you carry it in the pack? Is the trash you pack out base weight since it's not a consumable (like food & water)? Even though you don't count the fuel, does the weight of the can count since it stays with you the whole time and isn't consumed? They got real tight with me real fast! 😂 Now, IF they were being honest... ...15lbs would be the true rating for an "ultralight" pack because that's a reasonable loadout for real world conditions like potential weather maladies or a REAL first aid kit in case of injuries or yes...your devices being included along with proper rain gear. Add a real world weight of close to 10lbs for food & water (3L) for a long weekend trek and you're at 25lbs all day long and twice on Sunday which is still light as all heck when carried in a pack with a real suspension.z The difference between 10lbs and 15lbs in comfort & safety in base weight is otherworldly. It makes the difference between barely making it and suffering with overly compromising austerity and smoothin' it as Nessmuk would say. The truest ultralighters are mostly supported thru-hikers who resupply at various locations on the trail and that dump gear at strategic stops and have gear replaced with shipping pick-ups. Those guys can do a legit 10lbs base weight and even then, under the most ideal conditions.

One thing a lot of people forget: Experience is the greatest teacher. My opinion is this: UL is the end result of MANY hikes/trips. As we learn and grow as hikers/campers, you reduce the amount of stuff you find that you need, and you upgrade to lighter versions of what you do. The main problem with UL, is that people want a quick answer. They want the end result w/o the effort and experience needed to get there. So A LOT of people waste a TON of money on gear that ultimately won't work for them. At the end of the day, they get the experience regardless. Either it'll be a natural progression, or it'll be an EXTREMELY expensive/painful progression. The latter may even break the truly weak, and they quit hiking/camping altogether. Another thing that people either don't think about, or they completely reject: Get more fit. Get stronger, so that the heavier loads aren't as strenuous. The example I give is extreme, but it shows what I mean: In the military, you've easily got a 50 lbs pack. That weight will be higher depending on mission requirements. That's not including all your other gear. You'll be easily carrying an extra 100 lbs or more, walk for many miles and STILL be able fight. Again, that's an extreme example. But the point remains: Become stronger, and the weight will matter less. We're all out here hiking to become better versions of ourselves, are we not? Or to appreciate nature? Not a sermon, just a thought.

Colin Fletcher, author of "The Complete Walker," is often considered the spiritual godfather of the modern wilderness backpacking movement. I've never forgotten his two rules to packing light: 1.) If you need something, take it. 2.) pare away relentlessly at the weight of each and every item. This first item is the most important: if you don't NEED something, don't take it at all. The second is harder, as it implies: take minimal shelter. That may mean just a small tarp instead of a tent. It also implies that you will need to own two or even three down sleeping bags, so that you can minimize weight by taking the one that matches the coldest nighttime low temps you expect. My butane camp stove is pretty much relegated to car camping. I mostly go no-cook (which is incredibly liberating), sometimes I'll take an Esbit stove to make morning coffee.

I never bought into the base weight thing. To me, what matters is your weight with water and about 4 days of food (or food for however long you are going between resupplies). My AT pack with all of that was about 26 pounds and that was very managable. Should you try to get as light as you can? Yes, but don't sacrifice items to the UL Gods that could have made your trip much better.

Awesome video! I totally agree with you. I have spent around $3,000 on UL gear over the last two years. The only thing I can do to drop weight is to go with a Zpacks tent. I’m currently using a Lunar Solo. Around 26 ounces. I’m heading out on the BMT for three days in about week, depending on weather, and I’m at 22.8 with food and water. Base weight is useless as far as I’m concerned. I’m old and need to pack smart to stay safe.😂

My overnight pack base weight is around 9lbs, but thats only good for maybe 1-2 nights in spring or summer, and it assumes that I will be camping on soft ground in familiar terrain and wont need a mallet, GPS or a compass. I scoured the sales, ebay and special offers and got the whole set up for less than £200, all new. None of it is top of the range, but its all decent and servicable, and I won't mind too much if I have to replace bits. When I see sleeping mats that weigh 50g less than mine selling for £300 more, then I wonder if UL is actually about keeping the weight down, or boasting about how much money you've spent.

The purity mindset can be a bit extreme in some ways. The brackets of what weight is what weight class is interesting. I hiked the CT with my son and did grips of research about these topics and learned a ton of what’s essentially needed. I really was striving for a 10lb base weight to get as light as possible (just to geek out with it) and I didn’t quite make the cut to be considered technically ultralight but I was definitely (in my option) was in the lightweight or super lightweight class. I’m really pleased with striving to play this game as best as I could and felt the reviews that content creators were making was absolutely priceless. My base was under 12 lbs and I had a blast although I felt I could’ve easily carried a few more pounds without feeling crushed 😄 I got s kick out of your vid and definitely subbed. I'm over worrying about if I have the ultimate UL kit. I sit at 11 to 13 lbs baseweight, depending on the season and trip. I have some super nice pieces of kit that keep me comfy and safe. I have been working more on food items that are lighter/more calorie dense and not over packing on food. We pack our fears and my fear is being hungry on trail. That and my husband finding out how much $ I have spent on said gear. I love my Xmid pro2 and my HG Winter palace tarp, but I don't think I wanna live in them.😂

10 pounds require the right terrain, the right distance and the right climate. In my place in Northern Norway a day trip will be a minimum of 15 pounds and then I have the bare minimum for enjoying the trip and staying safe! If I am going to sleep outdoors it is easily 25 pounds and then it is no frills. So I had a good laugh watching your attempts at cheating the weight limit. But just one technical question - those ultralight folks in the USA - have they mixed up imperial measurements and metric measurements? It makes more sense with 10 kg than 10 pounds for being ultralight in the wild:) But you are doing good at 13 pounds and it is impressive! All the best, Ant

@@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING BTW - one wonders why on one hand UL Backpackers struggle to remove precious gear even at the expense of discomfort and possible safety issues, while on the other hand when it comes to weighing their body on the scale they have no problem: 1. Waiting until they wake up (burning calories while asleep) 2. Making a double-duty bathroom break before weigh-in 3. Stripping down to their birthday suit, wearing no more than a smile So why is it that backpackers never obsess, stress out, communicate and/or brag over their backpacking wardrobe that they wear on their trek? Before I finish the video (and soon to be understood) I will give you a clear understanding of ultralight backpacking and why there are NO rules...as you know rules that can't be enforced aren't really rules at all....unless of course you consider KZbin...there are enforcers here for sure. That said, I have recently figured out why I transitioned from traditional backpacking to UL. I assume most of the hard core UL people you will meet or see here whether they know it or not have ADHD. Of the many characteristics we would all share the love (desperate need actually) to be outdoors and to do it in the most efficient and crazy simple way possible. It's hard to find the motivation to start - traditional packing has way way too many shinny things to be misplaced or forgotten or not work. The more pockets and zippers to do and undo dozens of times when you lose track (and you will) of what you were doing and miss the air pump 3 times....zip zip zip...maddening to someone like me. Minimum things to sort, maximum retrievability, makes everything else easier and less frustrating - because we all just got off the couch right. Altitude amplifies all of it. So in order to have fun you go ultra"light"....which isn't the best word for it. "Ultrasimple" is where its at. Notice I said nothing about weight....it doesn't matter. Simplifying is like falling into a black hole. You just keep falling.. shedding weight naturally by simplifying whats important to you. The reason for the lack of hard rules is (if I'm correct) what is simple to one person with ADHD may be anxiety inducing for another. Both kits will be light and efficient even if one leans towards warmth while the other tries to stay dry. Just a thought to consider whichever side of the coin you may be on. For the youtube argument: Don't be crazy - All in hitting the trail at no more than 25 - preferably 20lbs. Bear can, water, food, fuel ...everything. 22lbs or empty the pack and we do it again. More than 25 hurts anyone in high mountains. Peace all!

What do you think about leaving your rain jacket at home when you're using an umbrella? One downside that I experienced this weekend is that you don't have the rain suit as an extra layer to insulate you in colder weather. I do think electronics should be considered, for sure. For example, do you need a lantern if you are also carrying a headlamp? When you're buying your electronics, make sure they all have the same charging cable instead of carrying one for USB-B, one for USB-C, one for Lightning cables (if it's before Fall 2024 when iPhones will have USB-C ports), etc.

I believe 2 world views on UL backpacking from the motto: ounces = pounds, pounds = pain. The lighter your functional gear, the less wear and tear your body has when you hike. simple: UL is 10 pounds , back pack weighted only, no consumables(food water). 2nd view: stop packing your fears, work to streamline your gear down to YOUR needs. I usually go around 13 pounds. my maybes are :winter gear, helinox chair, sun umbrella, fire kit, my frog toggs vs a arcteryx/patagonia rain shell act. rule 1;HIKE YOUR OWN HIKE.

Can barely make it down the trail with no pack and no gear. Reason for ultralight gear is because whatever gear has to be brought also has to be carried. And carrying gear hurts. The more weight, the more hurt. So, it's really about minimizing pain. Skip the quilt if it minimizes pain (hint: it doesn't)? Jupiter uses a four-ounce tarp and eats the pain of being cold, wet and bug-eaten. Here's another cheat-code: Be short and skinny. Short and skinny gear weighs way less than tall and fat gear. Skinny is probably the best UL-hack of all? (more...) Assuming 4k-calories/day food and 1/3 in each category (protein ,fat, carbs) and a 7-day resupply, each pound of excess fat beyond what could've been carried in the food-bag is dead-weight. For example, if one's ideal optimal performance weight is 180lbs, he could (theoretically) could carry 4k-cal x 7days food or carry it as excess fat (and not eat). That's 25oz of food or 1lb of excess fat per day. For the week, 11lbs-food carried or 7lbs excess fat that will be lost over the week. Most would argue not-eating isn't particularly healthy, but we're just looking at the calorie-vs-carry weight budget. Any more than 7-days can be resupplied (on average). If one is carrying any more than 7lbs excess-fat on their bodies, it's entirely dead-weight that has to be carried up and down hills. Such excess-weight should theoretically be counted against the UL-hiker's base-weight. Just to put it in perspective, let's say this author's only 30lbs overweight (I wish)? Then his true base-weight is his 14lb pack, plus 23lbs of fat = 37lbs base-weight. _Caveats and stipulations: Calculation doesn't include the metabolic base burn-rate, which is 1-2lbs/day for most people. Factor it in, if anyone's actually going to hike-n-fast? Because weight-loss per day fasting-n-hiking is more like 3lbs per day for this author._

@@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING No, Its a perspective leading toward Ultra Light kit design. The goal being to cover the backpack gone sideways first, then the rest of the Ultra Light backpack then focuses on good items for the hike gone as planned. I might look at Ultra Light versions of Dave Canterbury's 10 C list for form such a survival kit. Like many Ultra Light objectives, it's the work to get there that benefits most. I really like the survivalist motto, "The more you know the less you carry." as it speaks to skill development in the use of the natural environment relevant to the area one travels in. Further, skill sets that can build or augment survival gear from the environment packs light in one's head rather than pays for gear that adds to dry weight.

I was starting out and looking at UL GEAR almost made me quit the hobby from the start. I got very mid tier stuff, with more of an investment in better and durable stuff rather than lightness of weight. I lost a lot of weight and saved much more weight than I would have by spending idk six fold what I spent? Hopefully my gear will last me decades like what I hear about some old gear. I’m very handy and self reliant, I cook for myself and I do all my repairs that I can, so I might have just bought my last pieces of gear 🤞 Btw I see people complaint about light weight gas stoves when then they take a lot more weight in gas and canisters. For day hikes I bring alcohol, and I only bring what fuel I need. And I do a lot with wood stoves, so I literally don’t need to bring fuel if I want to.

For me, my Pack (Zpacks Nero) 300 grams, Pad 1 (Small Xlite) 235 grams, Pad 2 (6 trimmed Zlite sections, doubles as a sit pad, extra warmth, main pad protection from the ground, back up pad if the main one pops and my packs frame) 150 grams, and sleeping bag (Timmermade Serpentes 20F) 455 grams, and 2 Person tent (Xmid Pro 2P) 650 grams with stakes, comes out to around 1800 grams. 1800 grams is around 4lbs in freedom units. That leaves me with 6lbs to work with for the rest (umbrella and rain jacket = 250 grams, change of clothes and spare socks in drybag pillow = 300 grams, fleece = 125 grams, Puffy jacket - 250 grams, stove, fuel can, spoon and pot = 350 grams, power bank, cords, headlamp, wall charger = 300 grams, phone = 220 grams, knife = 30 grams, water filter and carry bag = 150 grams, FAK = 50 grams, Wallet = 50 grams, ditty bag/ misc/ repair/ toothbrush = 50 grams) all comes out to around 2100 more grams or another 4.6lbs. That's 3 season, full comfort, and only 8.6lbs. 1L of water, fuel and 3 days food and I'm usually sitting around 15lbs total when I head off. Like, if you want to carry 30- 50lbs with you, go for it (HYOH) I just prefer to get into camp at night after a long hike, and not feeling like shit. Your quilt goes in a garbage bag inside your pack, your electronics go in a zip lock bag. FAK is some ibuprophen and tape for blisters. I think some folks outright lie about their base weights. Or theyre bad at math. When you look at what theyre carrying all spread out, theres no way in heck theyre under 10 lbs for a 4-5 day trip. I guess if they cold soak a 10 pack of ramen, pack no extra clothes, no rain jacket, they sleep straight on the ground in a 5 oz tarp with a mylar blanket, no pillow, and doing jumping jacks to stay warm at night in the desert, and they only use a bidet as their poop kit when they water up at streams... and they only carry their phone for taking photos... then maybe. But their paid assistant carries their SLR with telephoto zoom lenses, their extra crap, and everything else they need in his 40 lb pack. Thsts how they ultralight it...with a sherpa. 😅 Im doing really good if im 17 lbs with food & water in the summer and 25 lbs in colder weather loaded up.

Entertaining. Tried but lowest I can get to is 20lbs + 3lb water + 7lb food = 30lbs. Because I use a hammock and 20 degree underquilt/top quilt, tarp, straps/stakes take up a lot of room, I have a Gregory 70l backpack (5lbs) designed to comfortably carry 40+lbs. Plus I have dive booties (use as dry socks), minimal extra clothes in 8l dry bag used as pillow, gloves, puffy pants, puffy coat, Frogg Toggs, there is only enough room left in that 70l pack for my 15l food bag (5 days food). My first aid kit is more than a boo-boo kit, included is a tourniquet, 5x9 sterile pads, cohesive wrap, super glue. Ditty bags includes map compass, Sawyer filter, poop kit, bug spray, phone, whistle, ferro rod, candle, and my luxury item is FM radio (like to listen to music/news while lying in hammock). Also, I carry a 15inch BBQ fork to cook steaks or sausage over a fire. I have to get used to carrying 30lbs because I need everything I carry.

At 71 with a few bionic parts installed in my chest, I find myself having to pair down. However, I'm not at the point of cutting off the handle of my toothbrush to lighten up. Electronics? that's a personal choice. I would suggest that a map, compass, and the knowledge to use them lightens up a bit. And in most cases I/We pack in to a phone is just at best useless and sometimes gets expensive due to international rates. I do admit that I carry a SPOT at the behest of my family (and insurance to cover the cost of rescue if it should be needed). So, I guess I come down somewhere in the middle of this controversy.

I think the whole "Ultralight" thing is overblown. It's kind of become like the cool kids thing to do. I can't even tell you how many times I have had to give food or some item while on trail to an "Ultralight Expert" who just didn't pack enough because of skimping weight. That's not only irresponsible, in certain cases down right dangerous. I think 10 lbs is stretching reality a bit as your video shows. What we should realistically be shooting for is less than 20% of our body weight, which medical science says is a healthy weight for our bodies to carry. For me, that would be 35-40 lbs. Since my base weight is 19-21 lbs, I am by quite a bit in the healthy range of load carry. Packing creatively, and creating solutions is far more important that being the lightest on trail. My pack weight was 28.8 lbs for eight days on the Uinta Highline Trail. I was 19 lbs at the terminus. Had an incredible time. All without being considered "Ultralight"

Awesome comment! I totally agree. It is a game I can’t play either. This was fun to attempt. But, it was too tough for me to get there without giving up stuff I really wanted to take. At the end, I added my Helinox chair and umbrella. Excellent comment! Appreciate ya for joining in this discussion. Crow✌️

I don’t believe many of the things ultra light backpackers think are legitimate. My way of thinking from Boy Scouts to the military. Also understand in 5’6 not overweight but thick built. I’ve always been the short guy but not the little guy. Anyway my point is I had to learn to stretch out my stride to keep up. This all taught me backpacking sucks no matter what your carrying. So I rather suffer while backpacking and relax comfortably. It’s better then carry less and suffer in camp. I personally feel no difference carrying 25lbs from carrying 35lbs. Yet 10 lbs can be a huge difference in comfort in camp. My pack and gear are also gear I know will last. I don’t like expensive because it’s light then falls apart after a season.

@@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING yep I’m 54 with bad knees in fact I’m forced to wear knee braces because they can’t repair the ACls . It couldn’t have been the VA taking years to do a MRI. Backpacking is a combination of Hiking + Camping. If you want to emphasize miles, speed, and comfort while moving on the trail, than you focus more on minimizing your pack weight. If you want to emphasize comfort in camp, enjoying campfire camaraderie, and luxury eating then you're more willing to add pack weight. Safety items are non-negotiable. The main point is Hike Your Own Hike. Anybody who says everyone should be doing anything a certain way is being a pompous ass. I avoid those people like the plague.

👍 interesting .. and I like the tongue planted firmly in cheek 😊. 'Ultralight Rules' 🙄 .. one wonders 'who' set / sets them. Based on some of the parameters named, a case of one BS'ing oneself? 😏. Simple physics. If it has to be carried, it must be included in the weight. That is, strip down buck N and put that clothing onto the scale as well. 'Consumables' .. if they are carried, even for a short period of time, then weigh them. Rather list them as 'variables' and if one wants to 'cheat' here, then 'average' their weight out over the trip. Those calculations should keep one busy for want of something better to do .. and don't forget the 'the closer to the finish line, the apparent heavier the perceived load' factor. That should make the calculations even more interesting 😁. UL backpacking .. I would rather call it 'comfortable' backpacking .. it's a compromise. Different courses for different horses. And .. not everybody has mine shafts for pockets. Many of us have to use what we have, and can afford. We just adjust the activity accordingly. 'Cheating' .. aka, BBB 'BS Baffles Brains' 😊.

@@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING 👍 .. yep, lighter is always an advantage but one must also be aware of the Law of Diminishing Returns. In my book, as long as one is comfortable / ok with their load and can handle it without undue stress, then all is well. Another 'sacred cow' .. 'Ultralight Gear' .. don't get me started on that 😁. Back in the 80's I read an article in my local South African Backpacker Magazine labelled 'The Naked Hiker'. 'Lightweight Gear' was becoming a 'buzzword' and the Author warned of falling into the trap of 'because it is so light, it can be included'. His point was .. "30 kg of lightweight gear still weighs 30 kg." Loads are very much a case of not 'what to include', but rather 'what to leave out'. Always a pleasure to add a chirp or two from the peanut Peanut Gallery 😁 .. thanks. Take care ..

Being an Ultralight Backpacer is as simple as saying you're one. There is no commission testing you out on trail. It's really just a status signal saying look how much more money I'm willing to spend playing in the woods then you poverty stricken large loaders. The real test is ether how long or far can you go with the least amount of gear or the heaviest amount of gear because that is a physical test not a financial test.

Then ALL of my electronic gadgets...one GoPro Session mounted on the shoulder strap, one GoPro Session mounted on the trekking pole, the extra Session in my pack, the GoPro Hero 7 mounted to the tiny little GoPro tripod for those "Crow shots" of trail walking past the camera, the extra batteries and SD Cards, the various GoPro accessories to capture that perfect shot, my Inreach that my wife insists that I always have attached to my pack (because she thinks that I am accident prone) and my phone....just my electronic gear is over the 10 pound limit!
