I Don't Want To Be A Lawyer | Why I'm In Law School

I don't want to be a lawyer. In fact, becoming a lawyer is one of the last things I want to do. That raises the question though, why am I in law school? Currently, I am a 2L law student at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University. This means I go to law school at ASU's downtown campus in downtown Phoenix. I decided to go to law school even though I don't want to be a lawyer because I want to work in sports. Specifically, I want to work at the highest level of sports. I would like to work in the front office for a professional team, or potentially open my own sports or talent agency down the line. That still doesn't answer the question of why I'm in law school though. I don't need to be a lawyer to do any of those things. Becoming a lawyer can help though.
I decided to enter law school with a focus on sports law. Specifically, contracts and learning about league rules for professional sports teams. Though it isn't necessary to be a lawyer to do what I want to do, it is definitely helpful. The two degrees that are most commonly held by people in high-ranking positions in the sports industry are JDs and MBAs. I was actually planning on getting both of these, but my LSAT score was significantly higher than my GMAT score, so I decided to just go to a higher-ranking law school and only get a JD or law degree. Recently though, I was accepted into the MSLB program here at ASU. The MSLB is a master's in sports law and business and is part of the Selig SLB program at ASU. If I'm being honest, it is exactly the degree I was looking for. I get to take classes in sports law, NCAA compliance, and analytics. Plus, I get awesome experiences like touring professional stadiums and speaker panels with NFL and NBA GMs. Recently we got to tour State Farm Stadium, home of the Arizona Cardinals and the host stadium for last year's Super Bowl.
Now I am pursuing a concurrent degree as a JD/MSLB student. I know it will be extra work, but I am sure it will pay off. I don't want to be a lawyer. Even entering law school, becoming a lawyer was never part of my plan. I always wanted to work in sports, and this is just my next step on the journey to doing so. If you're pursuing a law degree, what kind of law do you want to practice? Thanks again for watching, and I'll see you next time!

I'm a mid career professional and considering law school to boost promotion so I understand where you are coming from . Probably will never practice but the majority of my promotion paths require bar admission.

That tends to be the case in certain industries. I don’t know what field you’re in but there are some other options that take less time and are less intense. For example, here at ASU we have a Masters in Human Resources and Employment Law program. You aren’t bar eligible afterwards, but it is a graduate degree from a law school and it has opened the doors for some students. If you don’t intend to practice then I’d seriously take a look and see if any programs like that could be a better fit. Just be careful, some law schools are adding masters programs just to earn extra income and they aren’t really providing the students with any actual value. You may decide that a JD is the right path for you, but I figured I’d mention these programs just in case. Best of luck either way!

@@Tex100 You are right. I already have a graduate degree but specifically need the bar eligibility. Thanks for the info.

A degree from a law school that does not end up with you being a lawyer = DO NOT DO IT. Disclaimer: I am a lawyer who is currently finishing a masters in Computer Science.@@Tex100

Just discovered your channel and its very encouraging! So keep it up! Im finishing my undergad with ASU and very interested in mvong somewhere warm for law school! Amazing work on your journey too by the way, and im curious, if not to be an attorney at a firm, are there jobs like the one in sports entertainment youre talking about in other entertainment avenues? Film and television? Have you heard about that while at ASU? Just curious:) Again great content !

Glad you enjoy the content! There are definitely legal jobs in entertainment! Most big film studios and television networks have a few lawyers on their staff. There are also a ton of lawyers at all of the big marketing and agency firms. Pretty much every aspect of the entertainment industry has legal jobs. Sports, tv, music, social media, they all have jobs for lawyers on both the firm/company side and on the talent/athlete side. It all depends on what you want to get into and who you make connections with. If you plan to go this route I highly recommend looking into schools that have sports/entertainment law programs, good IP programs, and good business law programs. You can learn the basics of the latter two almost anywhere, but some schools have really great opportunities for them. If you haven’t already looked into it I’d dig deeper into ASU’s programs. This is one of our specialties and the school loves their double devils!

Great video, but wanted to ask this: you could've pursued a specific certification or a diploma too to learn the integrities of it(even part-time online diplomas would give you the knowledge), why a full time law school, then?

Honestly because of the security of it. Getting a good job in sports is very difficult and having a law degree as a backup plan is a really good option. Plus it definitely opens other doors and makes it easier to move around in the industry. A lot of factors weighed into my decision, but I liked the added safety it provided. Plus, being in the top 10% of LSAT takers and not going to law school would be a bit of a waste 😂

❤I'm a 2L preparing to study investment banking/securities law and tax law to help create affordable housing as a transactional attorney. Affordable housing is often developed through private equity, municipal bonds, other bonds, and tax credits. I used to be a securities broker. I'm glad that I found your video.❤

Wow, you can be a cool sports agent like Tom Cruise in Show Me the Money!. . .In your dreams, that is. "Sports Law" is not a realistic career option.

Wasn’t realistic that I made it to a ranked law school after dropping out of college either 🤷‍♂️ I’ll keep doing what I want and pursuing my goals. You’re more than welcome to keep being bitter online though instead of focusing on yourself

@@Tex100 A "ranked" law school? What rank, pray tell? Oh, law schools love to fool gullible people into spending a few hundred thousand dollars on tuition, books, and living expenses, and three years of their lives, to pursue a career in "Sports Law" "Space Law" "International Law" etc. It's a complete scam. I have been practicing law for over 25Y, haven't met a Space Lawyer yet, or an "International Lawyer" and if I even mentioned Sports Law, or becoming an Sports Agent with a law degree, people would laugh at me. Sounds like you really loved that Tom Cruise movie. . .Show Me the Money!
