I was FLYING yesterday down a road and hit a pinecone and fell directly on the right knee. If I wouldn't have had my knee pads on my knee cap would've been destroyed! I even cracked the knee pad in half 😂😂 I dont care if I look stupid, I'm always gonna wear protective gear.

Hi, I wear protective gear for roller skating but not for ice skating. I have never seen anyone wearing full protective gear on the ice rink, I think I would look silly. This has made me rethink. Better to look silly that have an injured knee cap? I don't know what to do now.

My azz to my ribs, sternum, clavicle, shoulder blades are ALL WRECKED from hitting that tail bone HARD. Knocked the breath outta me, my hearing went muffled, peripheral vision in one eye left., that corrected itself Thank you Jesus.I almost fainted twice. I did have wrist guards on and if I didn't I would have been in surgery for 2 compound fractures. And I'M the 1st one to say..."aww heck, don't need that crap" 2 weeks out and I am just now bending while brushing teeth. But😉, I've been changing and beautifying my skates.

I am back at it, but have all the gear now including butt pads and a helmet. The butt pads are great! I feel like I look ridiculous but my rear end is thankful. I am not a natural at this. Honestly the importance of "practicing falling" before ever putting your skates on is so important, and people really need to give their reflexes more credit than they already do. Before I ever put my skates on I practiced falling in my living room with my gear on, but in the back of my mind I was still afraid my body wouldn't naturally do what I was practicing. Until, I fell. On ice. Walking to my car. I was actually quite surprised at how my body's natural reaction was to tuck my chin, and pick a butt cheek to fall on. I hadn't even realized I was falling until I was on the ground. I'm still a new skater, but now knowing my body does naturally have that reflex makes me feel so much more confident.

Today, is May 2, 2024. I just watched this video. When you started to stress the importance of not giving up on your dream to skate despite your weight and what others think of you. I got emotional with you. Yes, it's true that people think roller skating is for kids. I've had it said to me since I broke my wrist March 23, 2024, followed by a surgery to add a plate to my radius. I still want to skate again. I don't want my injury to win. I want to be a good skater that can get around the rink, and hopefully not fall. Thank you for all of the videos. I've saved about ten or more from your KZbin videos.

Not to downplay your injury but it is the most common of all in skating. Every single skater suffers from this injury at some point and then returns to skating. Figure/freestyle skaters hurt their tailbones fairly often when learning more difficult jumps. Just know that you will enjoy skating again and again :)

I’ve seen a lot of videos lately of good skaters having spectacular falls, and it gave me some reassurance. If they can fall in public, and put it on social media for all to see, I guess it’s not so bad. Also, falling on your tailbone can hurt for not just weeks, but YEARS. It sucks!

D., Thanks for all your great teaching, and especially for your honesty! Some skaters just tell you to 'learn to fall' or get low and roll. All that kind of advice makes me feel worse; like, great, I can't even fall right? Jeez.

I love your tutorials, Dirty! But this has been the most valuable one for me so far. The way you explain to automatically get low when losing balance - it's saved me countless nasty falls while getting the hang of skating on uneven / bumpy concrete. (No rinks in the part of Australia where I live, sadly!) Thank you

I’m glad I watched videos on how to prevent injuries before I began learning to skate! I fell on my first day, but I only bruised my leg because I didn’t panic and knew what to do! and now I’m not afraid of falling! skating is too much fun to be held back by fear!!

Thank you so much for this video! I got a concussion on one of my first times out on skates. I was wearing a helmet so it wasn't terrible, but I was pretty embarrassed! And scared it was going to happen again. This video made me feel seen and gave me the courage to get back out there after I healed up. It's been a few weeks, and I'm out there having a blast again!

I love this video Dirty! I went for a little ride today on my skates with the outdoor wheels on which went very well but it was a little weird because I kept on feeling a vibrating sensation on the bottom of my feet that is why it felt weird but it was fun though. I did trip a couple times but didn't fall. I'm ready to do the outdoor skating again. lol

Thanks so much. I just purchased my wrist guards last week. I’ve just started the skating journey at 54 years old and LOVING IT! Feeling more confident and your videos have helped me tremendously. I’ll get my padded shorts next - not that I don’t have enough padding already 😉🤣. Gotta protect my coccyx 😳👈🏾🙏🏾 Again, thanks so much. BTW - who knew it could be so freeing and slightly addictive at the same time 🤪

I used to think I was too cool for helmet when snowboarding but after a few bad falls, I decided I should wear a helmet and I'm glad I did. I've had a few falls with the helmet that hurt so I can only imagine how bad it would have been without a helmet

Thank you Deb, your videos are the best ❤. In the last month, three girls around 6 and 7 years old broke their elbows skating. They are at the after-school activities. My 6yo daughter goes there. She goes with all the gear, knees, elbows pads, wrist guards and helmet. Some of the other girls only knee pads. No helmets. I have to say my daughter has epilepsy so she has to be protected just in case. I didn't wear anything when I was a child but my knees, elbows , hands a were full of scratches and I felt on my butt many times. 😅
