A lot of fans hate the line. They say "he's not really going to die, he's just being vain". 10 explained the process and how traumatic it is. I guarantee if you went thru something that made you feel like you died, it changed your face, your body, your personality, you probably would have a great deal of reluctance to get on with it. It's more than just changing your clothes like some make it out to be.

Several of the recent doctors are pretty clear they view it as functionally being their death. The Ood speak of "singing him to his sleep", Capaldi's says "won't kill anyone - well except me", Whittaker laments not getting to see what happens next and has a line (blossomiest blossom) from a real life person who was dying of cancer. Of course River never gets sad 'her' doctor has died, earlier doctors view it as just changing their appearance, Romana tries out several faces, and notably Capaldi's doctor forces a regeneration on another character - which from his point of view *would* be him killing the general. So it's inconsistant. But the character quite clearly views regeneration as them dying, but that other doctors will take their place. Though they also view their past selves as mostly 'still them'.

10 only lived for 6 years, knew about his oncoming death/regeneration for ?several days?, was alone at that point, had lost Rose, has in general unfinished buisness/regrets. I think this all makes him so reluctant to go. But I wouldn't have objected against a faint, pained "Allons-y" right after his " I don't wanna go", when facing the inevitable.

@@mrflibble1259 Well, I guess I've run across people so hung up on this scene and line that it hinders trying to break it down. Or they take great issue for the doctor having any emotion (alternatively others have answered and 10 unlike other doctors experienced this once with his regeneration stopped by the hand and this as well as the regeneration limitation may have factored in as well as ego). There's been a tad of a "third rail" aspect to examining this scene. Indeed, you're right that this is the point of the video and maybe that kept some from viewing it. I just liked the insight to the craft of acting and production.

Take three is really absolutely incredible. Take two makes it sound like he's surprised/shocked that he isn't ready yet, take 4 is, as Tennant says, a bit too out of character. Take three combines that feeling of surprise, with a rare moment of the doctor being emotional, really nice.

One of the things I love about Doctor Who is the way that the future can affect your view of moments that happened in the past. This scene was great when it was shot. But by the end of the eleventh Doctor's tenure, it had taken on even more meaning. Because they told us more of the story behind this statement. He knows where he's going.

Sorry to burst your bubble but that's not true. It's pretty obvious that Moffat, while writing a fantastic 50th special, did what he usually does and wrote an episode that retcons or "inserts" new scenes in the past like having Galiffrey survive the Time War, having Clara in S07 save the Doctor throughout his life (even in classic Who) but somehow he never manages to remember any of the encounters except the ones in S07, or when Clara visits "kid" Doctor in S08's Listen. All of the Doctor's final lines before he regenerates are suppose to represent the actors in some way. Christopher enjoyed the time/character, David didn't want to leave the job, and Matt changed as a person but will always cherish being the doctor.

I agree, the third take was more subtle. He wasn't completely breaking down like the forth take, but you could still see that he obviously didn't want to regenerate. He seemed upset by it, but not to the point of hysteria. Wow, it's so hard to put what you feel into words sometimes, isn't it?

Exactly! In many ways, they _were_ the same person. John Smith was basically Ten if he had been born a human. They share many traits: bravery, dedication to protect people, dorkiness, and the fear of "some other man sauntering away," living the life that they couldn't have. 10/10 to RTD for writing John Smith and Ten so perfectly!
@LifeVestProductions
@LifeVestProductions 9 жыл бұрын
I think the reason so many people hate his regeneration is the fact that he seems much more human than alien when the line is delivered. I quite like it (the fourth is over done but I think they chose well for the final cut) because it shows quite a bit of character development. There was quite a few times with the 9th and 10th doctor that he had to battle with himself to remain grounded and mostly his companions along the way are what helped him with this. When he knew he was going to regenerate, he visited every single one of his old companions even if they didn't know him yet or couldn't remember him. I believe the more human part of his final line is the fact that he's saying "I don't want to go" but also thinking what that means for him. To me, I think he's saying he doesn't want to lose something he doesn't register already as being lost; again, completely a human way of thinking. Sure most of his companions are long gone, but as soon as he regenerates he knows he'll become a new person and there's no real way of telling how he will look back on his old companions in his new persona. Visiting them like he did sort of set in stone for him that it would be the last time he would see his old friends, even if it was more of a mental block on them and a self forced goodbye rather than actually stating he could never see them again in his next form. He probably knew if he were to even try to see them again in his new regeneration, what little composure he had here would be thrown out the window. The 10th doctor sacrificed quite a bit more than most of the other doctors in the new who, in my opinion. Which is why I find him breaking down a bit at the end very acceptable because it doesn't show a static character.
@LifeVestProductions
@LifeVestProductions 9 жыл бұрын
I don't think his line means he doesn't want to lose this regeneration more so he doesn't want to lose the people in it. Even though they're already gone.

"Dying is like coming to the end of a long novel, you only regret it if the ride was enjoyable and left you wanting more." That fits the 10th's last moment and that's where the "I don't want to go" plays out.

After so many years, looking back at this scene, I feel like this scene wouod've been thousand tines heavier if the choir went silent before the "I don't want to go" line. It would've left Ten's plead in complete silence. No response. Just silence. Empty, abandoned. Alone. Representing the last emotional and mental state of his incarnation

0:31 You know what... I honestly think that they should have gone with that take. Why? Because it shows that despite the the fact that the Doctor doesn't want to regenerate, he's still approaching it with bravery. He makes a small acknowledgement that he's doesn't want to go but then he shows true courage and approaches the regeneration without allowing himself to even slightly break down under the fear and sorrow he feels inside

i agree completely, in the 3rd take hes tryna be brave and he’s still holding it together, it’s more shocking to see someone on this pedestal of strength fighting to uphold their image, that’s why it’s such a great scene when he tears up in front of wilf earlier in the story but he doesn’t completely break down

4 is a literal killer and way overly emotional I do wish Netflix was customisable or something and it gave you the option to watch with an alternative take like this that doesn’t change the plot to see how it would feel (or any streaming service for that matter) but I feel they got the perfect one the first one was so unemotional you’d be at risk of maybe laughing at it I know I did there had to be some distress there but the last one was verging on John smiths character having a breakdown and we know the doctor to be braver than that

I don't hate his actual regeneration at all, but what I do hate, for the same reasons, is his whinging when he feels obligated to sacrifice himself to save Wilf. He sounded like a child having a tantrum and it wasn't emotional in the slightest, even though I knew full well that it was supposed to be. It's ironic when people usually talk about Matt Smith acting like a child at points, as he could have done that scene a lot better and not act like a child.

Dampferhöhle Lupis Yeah you said it better than I did. RTD was about the emotion, Moffat is about the story. Sadly though, a good story only works if it conveys a lot of emotion. That's why I think it was best when RTD was in charge. Moffat provided great stories, but RTD kept the show human.
@efu7547
@efu7547 7 жыл бұрын
Which is kind of erky to me. You tend to rewatch the episodes with emotion more than the ones with the plot. Most of DW's plots are at least good anyways. Sigh...I don't know if it's jsut me, but while Matt Smith and Moffat era was good, I just didn't like the gap between 10 and 11. They felt too disconnected; if I had to put it in the worst true light, I have to say...11 didn't feel quite like the doctor to me anymore. 9 and 10 were the greatest. :) I can accept change, but not one as cut off as that one. Still a great show. Miss the old seasons with RTD's characterization.

Late_Bloc_Party That's a good point, and it's similar to what the Russo brothers said about directing the Marvel movies and managing such a grand web of stories, you start with the characters, their personal struggles and emotions, and build the story around it. That's how you get your audience to be invested in how the story unfolds.

I think they went with the right choice here. I think seeing him break down entirely would have been too much. I notice a lot of people criticize Ten's final line even as it is, but actually I think it works. David Tennant's version of the Doctor was perhaps the most human like and tragic of all his incarnations. Born out of a love for Rose, he started out warm and kind and loving, albeit a bit careless at times. But over time, he lost everyone he let into his heart and his own loving, kind nature became his downfall. He was not only afraid of what he might become after regeneration, but also that this would be his last chance. And I think, in the end, after all he went through, there was a part of him that believed he deserved better. And I don't blame him. I think there were some instances of self-loathing for him as well due to what his companions went through for him and the people who'd died in his name, but when he's facing his end and he says, "I could do so much more, and this is what I get. My reward. And it's not fair," I completely agree. It's not fair at all. That's the tragedy of it. Sure, he made mistakes, but that's life. There was never a more selfless or a braver man.
