Diving bells do not have water in them. Neither the open bells or the closed bells, like whats in the story. It kinda defeats the purpose if they did. The only time a bell is flooded is when equipment is being installed inside and then its only partially flooded. Nor can it be operated from inside, only from the surface. So there would be no, "button," to push to rise back to the surface, as the MC did. Hence the whole purpose of having a crane operator to begin with. Maybe I misinterpreted what was said but, "the water inside didn't jostle or move but we could feel..." seems to imply it was full of water, as you wouldn't expect that from a few drops from you entering. Something else they seemed to miss, which I am less educated about so I could be wrong: At that depth, you wouldn't be wearing a typical wetsuit but a drysuit and a heavy one at that. That's what the umbilical from the diving bell attaches to, to keep you breathing. It also provides electricity and heat to keep you from freezing to death. As well as allowing the ability to communicate, as you're not wearing a mouthpiece and at a significant distance from the control center. So there would be no swimming around the bell, as they do. You would sink like a stone. They would need to already be in the bell, before it even touched the water. I could be wrong again but the fact that they lose their way when they clearly said they attached their lines to the umbilical is kinda confusing. The only time the umbilical wouldn't be attached is in an emergency, when they were running on the emergency air tanks affixed to the suit. All this, and other inconsistencies that I missed, adds up and makes the story less enjoyable than it could have been. Guess this is why that old adage, "write about what you know," exists.
@1206overlord
@1206overlord 3 жыл бұрын
About the bell, I wasn’t aware of that. I had done research but I also heard an irl story about people who drowned in a bell when their umbilical became severed. Guess I should have looked into that more. Also I’m pretty sure weather or not it could be operated from the inside would depend on the bell, as they aren’t all the same. As for the suits, I mentioned that they were using expensive suits from the NOAA to combat the pressure, and even specifically mentioned that these suits would allow them to go down to the vents. The story I wrote does mention that they hooked to the umbilical as they entered the bell, and unhooked as they left it.
@DeathEyedGrin
@DeathEyedGrin 3 жыл бұрын
@@1206overlord ah, I heard expensive suits and immediately assumed a drysuit for saturated diving, as they're outrageously expensive. My bad. Which is why I assumed they were being used to go to the vents, being that it would allow them to walk on the bottom, where the vents would be, and keep them from boiling alive in the water around the vents. I must have missed the unhooking part, and just assumed thats something you would never ever do during that sort of dive. Sorry again.

Decent story. Both Brett & the MC were pretty dumb, which made certain bits of the story really frustrating. Also, I feel like the ending was a bit rushed. We don't really get any explanation for what those things were, or get see the reactions of the other two crew mates at the end. It seems like the story was setting for some sort pay off on those elements since it seems like the crew was set up.

I appreciate the criticism, I do agree that I put it out a bit too fast, I was too excited to have my first story go up. However I will say I plan on writing a sequel, which is why there are seemingly unpaid setups ;). If you don’t mind, I’d love to hear what it was you didn’t like about Brett and Jason/what decisions you think were dumb. I’m always looking to improve future stories

I think you could use the term ground control. One definition of ground includes the sea, elevation is based on the Mean Sea Level, GPS elevation uses the geodetic model of the earth (based on the geoid: the egg-like shape of the Earth which is more accurate than MSL for gravitational purposes). It's a random thought I had while listening. Had to get it out so I could continue without distraction. Yay short attention spans! 😆
