When I first saw this live, Gabe didn’t come onstage until There’s A World. During I Dreamed A Dance, Diana was just dancing side to side with a baby blanket held to her chest which I feel makes both songs feel a lot more powerful but this one is great too

My mother and I saw this show together and Alice Ripley talked to her afterward for almost 30 minutes. She suffered bipolar disorder and then the loss of my father last November. She took her life in April and I found her. I can never watch this scene the same way ever again.

I remember I saw next to normal when it was still off broadway and no one in the audience knew what it was really about including myself, and when they revealed that Gabe was dead and when they revealed she attempted suicide everyone audibly gasped. It is still one of the most impactful musicals I've ever seen.

I find it just heartbreaking that Gabe holds her wrist at when Dr Madden reads out that Diana tried to commit suicide by slitting her wrists :'(

The raw honesty of this musical is what made me fall in love with musical theatre and theatre in general as a Art Form! Before I was very anti musicals and hated the corny cheese of them all. But damn this one just hit like bricks and I Loved it! Saw it three times once on Broadway with the second cast, the touring cast and a small Boston production at SpeakEasy. A true amazing show that is A+

After listening to this over and over again during a mental health crisis, I can't hear these songs without crying. Especially There's a Place, since it verbalized how much I wanted to experience less pain, then a few days later I was admitted to the hospital for ideation. Next to Normal has kept me safe enough, if it wasn't for this musical, I honestly would feel more lonely than I do now.

god when dr madden reads that diana tried to kill herself through cutting… i’ve been free from self-harm for 7, almost 8 months now, suicidal thoughts for 6 or 7, and it feels like my whole body is shattering whenever i hear these songs 😭 they just break me, it breaks my heart

Hauntingly beautiful is how I’d describe this song. I don’t know why I find this song weirdly relaxing…despite the weird context in universe. It makes me sleepy…yawn.
