People really don't credit Anne Hathaway for how HARD it is to sing on key while full on crying and sobbing. I've tried, and it is HARD.

This one scene single-handedly won her the Oscar. Utterly brilliant. I still have no idea how she managed to embody the emotion of the song so well while still staying on pitch and not utterly breaking down in tears. Anne Hathaway could be our generation's Meryl Streep.

This reminds me of Jennifer Hudson's "and I am telling you" performance in dreamgirls. Not that they're similar, but that they are both performances that really make the movies they're in. Like, whew, soo much emotion.

Those tears come from leaving eyes open longer than usual. Any one can tear up well when doing this. More so, she looks very pretty here and when people are good looking they tend to find much appeal in them and for that they Appear more talented than what they really are. This is science, fact. Even so, I believe she did better than many others who are not very talented but win awards just because they have a name.

You could really tell Anne got so emotionally involved with the song whilst singing it, especially 2:28 and 3:44-3:51. Really captured the heartbreak and tragic downfall of the character. Also amazing how she did this whilst the vast majority was shot in a single take.

i have had that cry :/ it gets soo bad i can't breathe sometimes. and it really is alone. i had to run around the whole house, check if every room was free of people, and once i knew the coast is clear, i just let loose and cry my heart and soul out. and i sure as hell can't sing like that in normal conditions let alone a huffy balled up teary eyed mess like she was in. her huffs and puffs and screams gave that sense of her being in real believable pain, but she still balances it out with actual beautiful professional singing to. it gave me goosebumps.if people are trying to compare this to a real person cry singing, i'd say this would be a pretty mellowed down version, so i don't understand why some people feel like she's over-acting.

There was a time when men were kind When their voices were soft And their words inviting There was a time when love was blind And the world was a song And the song was exciting There was a time Then it all went wrong I dreamed a dream in time gone by When hope was high And life worth living I dreamed that love would never die I dreamed that God would be forgiving Then I was young and unafraid And dreams were made and used and wasted There was no ransom to be paid No song unsung No wine untasted But the tigers come at night With their voices soft as thunder As they tear your hopes apart As they turn your dreams to shame He slept a summer by my side He filled my days with endless wonder He took my childhood in his stride But he was gone when autumn came And still I dream he'll come to me That we will live the years together But there are dreams that cannot be And there are storms we cannot weather! I had a dream my life would be So different from this hell I'm living So different now, from what it seemed Now life has killed the dream I dreamed

I mean, in the entire genre of musical theatre the whole show is done as a "one take" thing; 5 minutes in a single shot is nothing compared to 3 hours with no room at ALL to say "wait, fuck, reshoot". Not knocking screen actors, they're every bit as valuable to the arts as stage actors and Anne's performance in this was indeed very impressive, but all I'm saying is screen actors only have to do the thing right once while we have to do it right every night with no ctrl+z's allowed

Susan Boyle is exact and theatrical in her rendition however; Anne Hathaway brought the emotional element required to convey Fantine's pain. Never lose that fact that this song is a social commentary, not a vocal competition. But more importantly this song is meant to be, Fantine's voice. And Fantine is too broken down and defeated by life, to be vocally ambitious. With that in mind, it is my opinion Anne Hathaway deserves as much credit as Ms Boyle, if not more. There is no shortage of outstanding, vocal technicans in this world however; the ability to musically transalate emotion, in the tone and of the mood as dictated by the musical piece, plus be a great singer, is in short supply. Perfection, in my opinion, will be a duet between both Anne Hathaway and Ms Susan Boyle. This is an open discussion, do please feel free to render our opinion.

The song has been sang in different contexts and in each one it glowed. You cannot pretend that Susan Boyle sings this song in BBT the way Anne Hathaway sang it in the musical it would have been out of context and therefore it would have felt fake. Both were fantastic

I have always loved this musical/song, but this movie really puts it into perspective. A lot of people will gripe about Hathaway's singing and acting, but I will always ask them this: Have you ever felt like you were hated? Ever felt neglected, abused? Ever felt like you could never be forgiven for all the horrible stuff you have done to yourself and to others? Well, that's how Fantine feels, that's how every woman in her position feels, who has to sell their body for money. There is no enjoyment, no reward, only sadness and despair. And they know there is no man out there who be different from the last one, who doesn't have a second agenda with her, who will ever be that golden knight who will fight for her soul and dignity. THAT'S what makes this scene great, and that is why I as a man will always cry.

I could not have said it better, myself! Like you, I have long enjoyed this song and this musical, but the "realistic" acting really does bring into account the pain and injustice that women like Fantine have suffered. Unlike the polished, pretty performances of "I Dreamed a Dream" in theatres and concert halls, this really packs a punch! In reality, Fantine would likely be too broken and despondent to care about how she sounds and the anguish of this young, unmarried mother who has suffered due to forces mainly beyond her control is just heartbreaking. Like you, as a man, I am touched and yet shaken at this portrayal of the cruelty of life; she was a street child, had no idea who her family was, she fell in love with a callous student who broke her heart and left her pregnant without any support. And she's become a sex-slave whose daughter is her only reason to live. Her dreams for a brighter future have been shattered as thoroughly as her heart and soul. And the struggling sobs, the trembling voice, the twisted face, the difficulty breathing from feeling like your heart is a being crushed, I've experienced similar pain. I know those sensations. And I still can't understand how anybody (gay, straight, bi, what have you) can destroy another person in this manner with hardly a thought.

Something a lot of people fail to understand about this version in relation to others is that in the film they changed the placement of the song, and thus the context of the acting. In the standard musical, the song is placed well before her prostitution. Fantine uses the song to come to the conclusion her life has been wasted, and is now worthless. Thus, she dedicates what's left of it to provide for her daughter-- regardless of how. It's a song of strength that propels her into prostitution. Whereas in the film, this song is placed later and is used purely as a means of mourning and coping over how wronged she's been. Anne Hathaway is a wonderful actress and it's performed beautifully; but people have to realize that due to the context this is ultimately a different song than all other versions of "I Dreamed A Dream". Whichever version is better for Fantine's character is completely up to the individual. I personally prefer the former as it shows so much strength and gives me such respect for Fantine's character, but again that is due strictly to the context of the song, NOT to the value of the performance. So yeah :) Anne Hathaway is wonderful ^_^

naa. I dont think it mattered as much. she is mourning a lost love. so be it before or after she had to sell body, she knew her future was already destined to be hard. look at the resolute face she had by 4:25. it was the face of acceptance of her lot.

For the people saying “her singing is bad” it isn’t meant to be perfect, Hathaway said she chose to make her voice seem weak and shakey because that’s how her character was at the time, it wouldn’t have been fitting to sing the song beautifully considering how the character was feeling

How anyone can thumbs down this is beyond me, this has got to be one of the most phenomenal performances I have ever seen in my life. A beautiful and tragic song given such depth and raw emotion, it's fantastic. I've always liked Anne Hathaway, but this just puts her on a whole other level, one of the best actresses ever, hands down.

Beautifully put, Jen. I reluctantly agreed to watch Les Mis, and long story short...I was reduced to a mass of raw nerves by the end. It was as you say, beautiful, tragic and raw...especially this scene. I'm so glad I was alone when I watched it. I truly cannot think of a major human theme that is NOT in this movie. I have watched this scene over and over again. I can't get over it. I may never be the same.

I have recently gone through some videos where there were best performance moments in movie history. This is by far the most moving and best performance i have seen. The expressions, the voice, the intense emotions. I felt like i held my breath the entire video. I SO must go rent this movie! If she can do this. Then there is nothing she cant do!

I've always loved Les Mis, but I think placing I dreamed a dream AFTER lovely ladies makes it even more powerful. The song comes just after Fantine has sex with her first customer and it leaves her full of disgust and degradation.

And this is one of the reasons I never really got all the talk and excitement about Susan Boyle - even ignoring the part taht she, in my opinion, is a good singer with a good voice (not a great singer with an amazing voice) who never would have gotten all the attention if she looked and acted a bit more "mainstream", *this song* is all about emotion. I know people love to sing at auditions and stuff, but this song is heart break and all hopes and dreams *shattering* and being flushed down toilet, about being in the darkest of all places with no hope of it getting better - ever. So in my humble opinion, when people perform this piece on stage, in front of people, they should have the decency to give it at least *some* depth and not smile and prance around like you're just having the greatest time ever. Honestly. Thank you Anne for this touching and authentic performance.

its not so much about her being Incredible, it's that the country judged her by her appearance when she came on that stage and without that chance shed probably never have gotten any other chance at her "dream" . she woke us up with a perfect example of why you should never judge a book by its cover.

Susan Boyle is the embodiment of this song in my opinion. She too had a dream, but ended up in her late 40's without romance. That's why her performance was so powerful. Because she chose this song. Now this is turning into a debate of Susan Boyle's quality of voice, and i simply have to state that there are much worse singers who are literally billionaires. So i think we can spare her some attention.

I agree it's all about the emotion. Credit should also be given to the composer. The song was was very well written. I could be touched by any theatre Fantines as they have good voices and convey the emotion. Not huge on Susan Boyle either. With due respect, she has a great voice. It was enjoyable performance to watch but it was just singing, she didn't intend to tell Fantine's story. On the other hand, I think Anne did a great job. Very touching, absolutely heartbreaking. So glad it was her!

I can tell how little people might know about human emotions and its spirit. People can´t see that the scene was meant to be like this, since she´s going through the verge of insanity, due a depression. The Victor Hugo´s novel, is based on vivid facts during the French Revolution, this woman went through rape, extreme poverty, humiliation, physical and psychological abuse in a society that was crumbling down, torn apart, where people barely had access to information or help, as we do today. Now days, you can find an inspirational or personal self-help quotes, groups or books anywhere, pretty easily, and even the families are more educated on its structure in civilized regions/countries, not all of them, but most of them are, each individual understands its role and responsibility, but back at those difficult times, people were more trapped in surviving, due the fact that they were living extreme situations and circumstances, outrageous events. Even the strongest person, that had been exposed to that unstable environmental social scenery would´ve had a break down (same as hers).

What i LOVED about Anne's performance is that she actually acted the number. Most women that sing this song even while acting the role sing it pretty. The character is dying. Life has killed the dream she dreamed. Some beautiful voices have graced this song to be sure but Anne made me believe that she was living the lyrics. Brava!

I hated her voice the first time I heard her sing this song (voice only, not the acting.) Then I heard there were Hathaway haters, and I wanted to jump on board. I hate fakers, so I was predisposed. I listened and watched her Oscar acceptance, ready to pounce (maybe I fill the role of the tiger in the song? ouch!) She was lovely and fault free. Then I watched this. Wow! Bravo Miss Hathaway! Effing bravo!

At the theatre, during this scene, my friend & I & everyone in the room burst into tears & burst into applause. Half the theatre did a standing ovation to this. That NEVER happens. I hope Anne Hathaway truly knows how phenomenal she was in this. I know it's hard for actors to get a true sense of people's feelings because of how the media skews things but damn, I hope she knows that she was simply perfection in this movie. We get that no one could see us giving an applause to this scene but it felt like there was no other way to show our appreciation for the work AH put into this. Well done.

She is my favorite character in this movie. And there were a lot of amazing characters. But I identify most with her. There is nothing I wouldn't sacrifice for my girls, nothing i wouldn't do to take care of them. It's called unconditional love and it's sad to see she was so abused when all she was trying to do was take care of her child.

So I saw Les Mis live at the Pantages in Hollywood on 5/30/2019. I was waiting to see what I knew would be the truth, my expectations were met. I've seen it live and all of the actresses have wonderful voices but that's the focus, the singing. The acting is either overkill or not enough emotionally. With that being said, this will always be Anne Hathaway's song. I didn't even realize the pain of the song until I saw this version, this is what won her the Academy Award!! No one I've seen live since has been able to live up to this version, the emotion, the delivery, nothing. Anne Hathaway's rendition is complete and perfect, Bravo!!
