Just for a quick heads up. The lane change system only works on Pro-pilot 2.0 mapped roads, so while the car is in "Blue" mode which is hands on it will execute auto lane changes with the lane button, or you use the turn signal to do a lane change. The 19 inch wheels ride a lot quieter than the 20s. The charge curve is super flat and will out charge an ID4 on Bjorn Nylands charging tests. Also the motor Torque Vectors along with the brakes The E-Step system is definitely a small annoyance due to no true 1 pedal driving but the vehicle does have OTA firmware updates available so maybe they will update it in as a selectable setting.

@@kellyducheneaux9760 Earlier I was in NJ and the car was new. Times have changed. These days I live in CA and I am not able to claim that kind of miles due to the mountains around here and higher highway speeds, but still getting in the range of 270-290 when driven correctly. I also drove from NJ to CA in the last summer and I achieved an average of 3.4miles/kw (from the trip computer) while driving at a much higher speed on many occasion (70-80mph sometimes) and the hot weather with A/C running. That also shows car might have about 295.8 miles on full charge. However after one year of use, I am not sure I still have the 87kw SOH.

Okay, the Ariya is a different beast. I have the Engage, and it's really quirky with e-step. The faster you remove your foot, the faster it gives you more regens. It clearly is not a Lucid Air or Tesla Plaid. It is just not built for that. It is designed for staying in a large city. It is designed to get you from point A to point B in a fun, sporty way. In the Eco mode, it can extend range by 100 miles. I can charge mine from 10% to 100% in 35 minutes. You can go ahead and charge it at home in about 5 hrs to prepare it for the morning. My car was 44k, and the Tesla Y, which had similar options, was 65K. Also, it will auto-change lanes in certain trims. Now with 10 trims, lol! Now, imagine what that beast will do when Nissan comes out with the performance model with a projected 200kWh battery and a 350kWh charging system. Nissan is smart. They have had the Leaf for years. Nissan moves slowly and methodically. Nissan has basically given up on super-fast hot rods. If you go 0-60 in 2 seconds, you can get a ticket for laying drag in my town. If you want more backseat room and headspace, get the Enguage, not the platinum, because of the roof, it takes up 3 inches. Also, the front-wheel drive has a bigger truck space.

I ended up buying an Ariya to replace my 2019 Model 3 and I really like it a lot. I don't disagree with your criticisms of where the Ariya falls short at least from a specs perspective. However, since I exclusively commute in my car and we drive my wife's 3-row SUV on trips, these down sides don't really figure in for me. The Ariya makes for a much more relaxing commute than my old Model 3, which accounts for most of my drive time. Plus, I got a $3750 rebate for financing through Nissan with a 2.99% APR for 36 months which is quite good these days. So that helped negate some of the cost concerns. For me it gives me 90% of the luxury experience with none of the excess baggage that a luxury marque brings with it.

Max charging rate of 130kW is only part of the story: Bjorn found that the 87kWh Ariya was still pulling 81kW at 80% SOC! Ariya’s flat charging curve (like E-tron’s) makes it a potentially better road-tripper than the modest max charge rate would suggest.

Everyone must consider that this particular review is for the top tier Platinum + AWD trim. The Platinum + Ariya feature for feature considerably overmatches the Tesla M Y long range or VW ID.4 Pro trims. A better example of an Ariya AWD trim is to compare an Evolve + AWD trim to the MY long range and I’d.4 Pro S plus. (The driving dynamics less pro pilot 2.0 would be identical). Last I checked the current price of a well equipped MY long range that wasn’t white is in the $55K range and VW ID.4 Pro plus with the large battery is priced around $55K as well. That said you can currently buy an Ariya AWD Evolve + for $56K and it offers a sunroof that actually opens, HUD, a surround view positioning camera, 4 wheel disk brakes, and a Heat Pump that the ID.4 AWD doesn’t offer. The only real disadvantage the Ariya has in the US right now when comparing price in this segment is that it no longer qualifies for a federal tax credit due to recent legislation. But as stated in this video a lease option may possibly be a way to address that issue.

I'm an owner of an Ariya FWD Premier since December 2022. I love the car, but I am not going defend it from what Kyle said about it. It is a good car, a competitive one, but nothing about it really stands out. The range is good, the efficiency is average, the charging capability is average, tech and safety features are on par with competitors, and it is in the same price range among the Mach E, Ioniq 5, EV6, ID.4 and Model Y. IMO, it is a good car and totally should be on anyone's shopping list for a cross-over EV. But I think the knock on the Ariya is that Nissan took 10 years to come up with a follow-on to the Leaf and they didn't come up with something that beats all competitors out of the water. I guess we wanted/expected Extraordinary, but we got a Good.

I’m a bit shocked on how harsh you all were on the interior and seems to be an overall lack of objectivity... because Nissan. All major touch points are soft touch materials, and in the top trim you get nappa leather and suede matrials, even suede on the pillars between the doors. I watched the review on the detail channel and was confused at the things that were called cheap. All the other reviews I've watched mention that the cabin is actually a highlight of Ariya and reads more premium than the competition. Overall the Ariya in a solid effort that has been marred by a botched launch that for the most part Nissan didn't have control over. I'm sure there were a few "damn can we catch a break" moments between the pandemic and shutdowns to the semiconductor shortage... THEN the tax credit getting pulled when they were finally able to get it to market. Everyone is complianing about the charge numbers when 85% of the time people are driving around town and in most cases you'll have a charger at home and charge over night. I also thought the numbers sucked, but recently saw a video of someone with a plug-in hybrid that had ~40 miles of range and the gas engine hadn't come on for an entire week with simply pluging it in at night. Even if you have a daily commute of 50-60 miles, with a big battery pack EV you wouldn't even need to plug in every night. Charge speeds are kinda like the new 0-60... its important but not as many make it out to be. It only becomes a problem when doing long roadtrips and thats a low point for EVs in general. 350W charging speed means nothing if you never see it and with such a crappy charging infrastructure overall. I'd take a solid charging curve that prioritizes battery longevity than outright speed.

I agree, fast charging is rarely a consideration for me to get an EV, like you said, most people just charge at home at night, and so am I if I do get one, if you doing long road trips very often, then this is simply not for you, but for those who just driving around town and city, the range is well enough, also, if you have a wife/husband, you can have an EV plus a ga car/hybrid for road trips, so you can see the fast charging really doesn’t matter at all. As for the materials, this is far better than Tesla Mode Y, it has all the soft touch materials and interior feels more premium than minimalist model Y. The only downside is that it’s kinda expensive, if Nissan can do few thousand dollars off,(for example $7500 because it’s the tax credit amount), then it’s pretty good buy.

I disagree on the charge speeds. If it saved money and put this closer to 35k, they could’ve used a 24a charger since you’re pretty unlikely to find or want to install a 40a home circuit for ev charging. So size it for a 30a circuit or go higher to 40a for 50a circuit. However, 60 and 80a are beyond overkill and borderline useless. 80a is the full breaker panel for some people. Sure, for suppling power there may be an argument but 80a/19.2kWh ac is pretty silly. Even a 16a 240v charger can deliver about 100 miles of range over 8 hours.

I own the FWD Premiere edition & am waiting to take delivery on the Platinum+ spec. I completely disagree with Kyle's assessment of the AC charging. I've owned mine for 6 weeks and I've never had to wait for the AC charge to be completed. It was always exactly what I needed when I needed it. Personally, I think that Nissan has been ULTRA conservative with their battery management of the Ariya due to everything they've learned from the Leaf. I wouldn't be surprised if after a year Nissan ups the charging limits to 150 kW DCFC with basically the same charging curve once they're able to test how well the battery operates under load for long periods of time. I'll be very interested to see what Kyle's thoughts are on the charging after a few tests & living with it for a week.

Exactly. Had a Nissan 240sx back in 1989. Love it. Nissan went into the reliability toilet after that & just kind of stayed there. Nissan appealed to me because they always seemed to have more power, more of 'something' than the competition. Was on my way to buying a Sentra in 2002, then I drove one & that ended that. Then I wanted a Versa. Asked the dealership to call me when an automatic one came in. They never did. Haven't looked at Nissan since. @@henrymatthews9365 I'm in total agreement re: the Maxima. It was out of my budget range at the time, but I really wanted one around 2008. To this day, I think it's the best looking sedan on the market. Fast too. I had a 2002 Civic with a CVT and I was onboard with the concept. For a 118hp car, it made sense & was really smooth. Know how stupid I was in 2016? I bought a Subaru WRX Sport-Tech with CVT. It was meant to be a Toronto car so I needed an auto transmission. Shockingly, it's been reliable. The harness had to be replaced, but it's got a 10yr, 160k km warranty on the transmission so for that I respect Subaru. The paddle shifting is really good. I test drove a Golf R & its DST was even worse - so much lag! I'm a big reliability buff, Consumer Reports was my bible for years. So I knew what I was getting into with the Subaru. It's engine probs I have now (only 90k kms) & I've had it with ICE cars. I'm Canadian, but unlike many Canadians, I love the US & would be proud to live there. That said, I have too much experience, too much data to ever buy an American ICE car. I'm saving for an EV & I'm so happy that the complexities of ICE engines/drivetrains are gone, I'm hoping US car makers can bring their reliability up. If not reliability, at the very least they can do is stand by their products after the insultingly low warranty protections consumers get now. Mostly, I'm looking forward to the 500hp & instant AWD torque!

Hell, if I didn't care about leveraging time-of-use rates, a 3.6 kW charger wouldn't really get in my way. It may be weird in the state of the market for Nissan to only put a 7.2 kilowatt charger onboard the car, but I really think people put way too much emphasis on charging speeds at home. Agreed. For many people even a 24A OBC would be fine. However this car is competing in a market where good enough just doesn’t cut it. 48A is the new standard for large battery EVs, and for many people who have long commutes, who go to dinners out, and have an early morning to leave, still sometimes doesn’t charge the car fully quick enough. To me, it’s not so much about what suits the daily driving, but for this price it needs to suit all driving. Hotel Level 2 road trip stop is a common occurrence for me, but rare for many. A 30A charger at business 208V would only be ~6.3kW - not nearly enough to charge the car during a sleep. I believe throughout the lifetime ownership of an EV, this will become a limitation at certain times and it’s unacceptable for $63k as tested.
@TechnologyConnections

@@KyleConner I agree that it's weird in the state of the market, but I also think that having higher than 30 amp AC charging only solves a few rare edge cases. Even the hotel example; you're unlikely to be there for less than 10 hours, and if you're truly in a pinch, you need to go to a DC fast charger anyway. On a road trip, hotel charging is really just a convenience to skip or shorten one stop. And if it's your destination, you're probably gonna be there for more than one night. The main reason I care about this is because I've been trying to get people to assess their actual needs before they commit to installing a 60 amp run to their garage or wherever. There's a lot of people doing needlessly heavy electrical work and service upgrades because they think they need the fastest possible charging their car can support, and as much as I understand that we want to view everything in the light of progress and "the best you can get," it is very possible to go overboard - and the way I see it, almost no one truly needs more than 30 amps at home unless we're talking about trucks.

I disagree with you about your AC charging rate of 30 amp being inadequate. For most people, they will be doing that overnight and generally will not be going from empty to full so it’s more than fine. For instance, on my model, Y I just charge usually at 16 A, with my average usage of about 150 miles over three or four days. So I can usually charge from 20% to 80% just using 16 amp charging although I could increase it to 32 A on my level two. Slower charge rates are better for battery life.

I agree with you. I have a 40 amp Grizzl-E EVSE that I haven't yet been able to hardwire yet, so I've instead set it down to 24 amps and plugged it into a NEMA 14-30 plug with an adapter. Charges my car just fine. It's not really necessary to go beyond 30-40 amps unless you're planning to get a MASSIVE battery car like a truck, where you need at least 48 amps to get performance similar to 30 amps on a smaller vehicle. I think the real problem here is the price: they really should be discounting it against other vehicles.

I agree with you too. Just having 220V in the garage is enough for everyone. The point being is that 110V is not useful at all, and should be avoided at all costs. Any existing 220V will work, and if installing new service just have a 220V 50A socket installed and get the most economically priced EVSE you can find, install an oven whip from Home Depot if its a hardwire design and plug into socket.

NO EV gives full power from the stop. A channel of your format SHOULD KNOW THIS! You mistake that with torque. Power is proportional to torque times RPM. As there is only a single gear the RPM directly proportional to the speed. So it is the most normal thing IN THE WORLD to not have the full power until a certain speed. As soon as you are at the point of max power (which in this case is about 40MPH ... as is with most EVs) the torque falls inverse proportionally to the RPM rising. This creates a flat power curve until the RPM limit of the motor. Torque is limited by the amperage the motor and inverter can handle. What Nissan should have done to prevent this misunderstanding (even seasoned EV journalists as yourself are falling for) is to report the percentage of the available torque produced at that RPM/speed. Nissan just decided to provide very limited torque and gently torque rampup ... And this is probably done to keep cost for the power electronics (mainly inverter) in check. The more torque should be delivered, the more copper is needed in the motor and the more MOSFETs or higher quality MOSFETs are needed in the inverter. Another thing is durability of the car overall. High torque at low speeds shortens the life span of differentials, drive axles, suspension arm bushings, and so on. So ramping the torque softly makes sure the car holds up during waranty. This is something the Hyundai Kona and Kia eNiro is also known for. These cars have a waranty of 5 and 7 years and thus it falls on the manufacturer if the car rips apart itself. How bad this is can be seen with the amount of suspension defects in Model 3 and Y ... sometimes worn out after less than 30.000 miles.

Its obvious they are Tesla model Y fans. Because this Ariya is Awesome. The cabin is great the ride is comfortable. This to me is better than the model Y.

This is a very biased, nitpicking review! I’ll still take this over Model Y. Nissan is well rooted in EV cars and the built quality of this car is better than Model Y. Don’t take my word for it, go check it out and compare it to Tesla, you’d be surprised at the quality of Ariya in and out. Nissan though, should have done better with the charging and price.

That's a heck of a lag time getting this video up. Broke up with Alyssa a few weeks ago.

Poor storage, no back seat room, high price, slow charging, no one pedal driving and poor range considering battery size. Thanks for not sugar coating the review.

I'm surprised that the US 87 kWh doesn't have 22 kWh AC charging the same as the UK models!

I’ve seen a few reviews about it. Universally it’s been reviewed as being a truly terrible EV. Range and particularly charging speeds are appalling.

As a Subie driver for the last 7yrs, I was looking into another until the car went out of warranty & ended up costing me about $1k/month in repairs since. I still did look into the Solterra, and looked immediately away. All manufacturers were in a huge rush to adapt to the EV market., but the only ones who were truly prepared, it seems, were Hyundai/Genesis and KIA (slightly less so, VW). All the others, especially Toyota & Subaru who partnered to design the Solterra, fell flat on their faces. Toyota/Lexus are the most reliable car makers in history. Their interiors are hideous, however. When you take Subaru interiors (utilitarian, minimalistic, "mom-jeans" appearance inside & out), you end up with the strange, awkward & off-putting Solterra. I won't support Elon by buying a Tesla (I have scruples), but the key to success there is to design something that does what they do closely enough, while providing an interior that doesn't look like a prison cell, and a charging network that doesn't disrupt your life too much.

Great video although it would’ve been nice if we could’ve had another camera angle from Alyssa to see areas of the infotainment system not captured by the mounted cams. No one pedal driving & lack of tax credit sucks
