"So, turns out the first truck we sent just kept flipping over onto its back because we never tested it, so we designed one that can flip over at will, and sent that one to rescue the first Kerbal." "Okay so that second truck we sent, turns out it gets no traction whatsoever because we didn't test it either. So we sent the same truck we used on our home planet to rescue the first and second Kerbal."

"Administration is reinstating the funds necessary to incentivise R&D in doing their jobs of reinventing the wheel for the rescue mission truck. They designed a square due to having reverted into cave-kerbals from prolonged exposure to boredom and having heir educational materials and computers confiscated from the first failed rescue mission. Eloo help us all."

"Fourth rescue mission. Okay we're now all undergoing basic elementary classes because Kelvin from the physics department forgot how to write the formula necessary to prove that microwaves, in fact, cannot fly. Administration took that as a sign that everybody else is also incompetent without testing anybody else, despite Kelvin having been awake without sleep for a year and was now going through a divorce and a murder case involving his mother's cousin's roommate's best friend's gay lover. We are now collectively testing the cheapest non-returning orbital rockets we can theoretically build at home in hopes that the next administrators and physicists are thorough and competent. For the love of all that is scientific, Eve save us all."

My Kerbal got stuck on Eve once. I landed a rescue rocket, but it was at Eve's North Pole. I had to land a big Mass Effect-style rover to take the Kerbal to the pole. On Eve, because of gravity, it's very hard to flip.

Also pro tip: The whole thing with turning left and right quickly to make it up hills is actually because of how KSP handles motor torque. If you set it up so that you have one side of the buggy "turning" one way and the other side "turning" the other (use action groups or something), then the tank steering neutralizes and you just get more power straight ahead. Kinda weird but that's KSP. I don't think it works if they wheels actually steer rather than using tank steering.

You should try actually take the truck off Duna and send it to the next planet rather than sending a new version of the truck to the next planet. Keep it going until it completely beaks down, then send a new one. I think that would make these truck journeys even more legendary.

Get Matt Lowne to do a Blunderbirds episode! Except he has to bring the kerbals and the rover back in one peice would be a good challenge for him and his krack team of kerbonauts also, after watching your rover to the south pole of kerbin video, I am now attempting the same thing! Managed to make it to the north pole so far, I might join the discord to see what others are up to, and I might see if I can fix your train idea so it doesn't snake on you

If a food mechanic was added to this game where kerbals could starve, the kerbal mortality rates would skyrocket. Casually sit in orbit, or in a flipped truck in space or on another planet for a year or two then immediately get back to work

Nice video! If someone hasn't commented about this already, I suggest you check out the Elcano Challenge on the KSP forums. The challenge is very similar to what you have been doing, with the catch being that it requires one to fully circumnavigate a planet by land or sea. As someone who's done the challenge on every planet, I'll be the first to say that driving a rover that far without going insane is no easy task!

Its not terrible getting back, your big thing is the rocket you need is quite large, but it is very possible (you could also do two rockets in and have a lander which then can go meet up a transport ship that takes people back. They are fun and complicated missions and they are my favorite to do. also not having to worry about bodies of water realy helped with the time. It still would of took a long time with Kerbin, but without the oceans in the way you could of probably got it done a lot faster.

Very nice video! I like the music and commentary and your new rover design :). For tutorials I recommend Mike Aben, has a lot of up to date tutorials with vanilla game and good explanations, I learned most of the navigation techniques that I know from him. Recently I was even able to pull off a surface rescue and land within 500 meters of target thanks to their tutorial, which I didn't think would be doable at first.

I returned from Duna on my first try with the smallest 4 orange engines strapped to the smallest tank on the smallest command pod, you just need a slightly bigger tank below it to get to orbit but the gravity is weaker and the air is less dense but that's all you need to get back to Kerbin

You've officially inspired me and my friends, to attempt the grand trip of Space Engineers, where we attempt to make it all the way around every planet in the vanilla game, all with the same rover, which will be transported from one planet to the next after it's completed 1 full lap of the planet. We hope to achieve this all within Survival mode, and ultimately, since the planets are so much smaller, and the rovers are so much faster, it might not actually take that long to go around each planet, so we might add some mods to spice it up, give us some more areas of interest. All in all I love this idea, circumnavigation with rovers poses several rather interesting engineering challenges regardless of the game, so I'm gonna do it. Already started work on the rover too, it's going to essentially be a mobile base, as we will likely need to refine recourses for repairs, upgrades, and additional hydrogen and oxygen along the way, but it should be possible to do it all with one rover, with no assistance from a home base of sorts, besides serving as the start/finish line, so we're gonna take on the challenge.

Getting home really depends on how kerbal you want to do it. Duna is one of the easier ones. You can go more straight forward and have a rocket. A high thrust vacuum engine should get you up easily, or you could go full kerbal and have a solar powered prop plane that stages off the wings and lights the rocket at 5km+

I know a way you might be able to get them back. And yes, you guessed right, it does involve the carrier I gave you. You might be able to build a SSRT plane that can fit inside the cargo bay and can work in Duna's atmosphere. I haven't checked to see if you could put small planes in it yet. And also Gilly and the ore landers. I might be able to make it and send you the file. It might end up involving a Kraken drive with the plane. I hope you're ok with that. Might not even be a plane if we're going the Kraken drive route. Or if we do use a Kraken Drive, we probably won't need the mothership. Or you could join the Matt Lowne subreddit and request a Blunderbirds rescue mission. That is an option.

@@sidspooki Sid I just remembered something. There is a Delta V map you can get by googling "Delta V map ksp" and it tells you the delta v requirements to get to (and get to orbit from) the various celestial bodies around the Kerbol System. I think a Mk1 command pod and crew cabin atop a mk1 rocket fuel fuselage (I forget the in game name) with a terrier engine is enough to get to Duna orbit. Attach a docking port to the side of that, add some RCS, and put it in the cargo hold of the carrier cruiser and away you go.

here's some tips ive found sending rovers to low gravity planets: -you should turn the friction control up to max, so that your wheels actually get traction -you should also turn your drive limiter to about 20, so that you accelerate slower. this will significantly help with stability -for all rovers in general, i usually increase break power more the further back the wheel is, to prevent flipping over -similarly i turn steering way down to prevent rolling Also, whenever i use timewarp on a rover, it always ends up bouncing and then breaking the wheels. Do you not have that problem?

I did a KSP Duna video where I tried to get kerbals to Duna and back... and it did not go as planned Absolutely everything was performed by guesswork, and while I managed to rescue the kerbals, I did need a rescue team, and then a rescue team for the rescue team, and the rescue team for the rescue team nearly lost a kerbal to the void requiring a 3rd rescue team. I didn't play Kerbal for a while after that lol EDIT: I almost lost a kerbal to the void in a munar mission video which also required multiple rescue teams and played out very similarly to the duna disaster lol

You should release two videos. One like this aka 20min and another of a vod style that is a couple of hours long. Or do whatever you want I’m no boss.

I can definitely upload the uncut versions unlisted and put a link to them. Only problem I don't record the sound because I'm typically watching KZbin on my second monitor. So it would either be soundless or you'd hear random youtube videos in the background aha
