The most depressing thing about this is that ungodly amounts of taxpayer money have been spent trying to address these issues and there is absolutely nothing to show for it (other than a whole bunch of politicians and "community leaders" lining their pockets).

I travel regularly it's everywhere. You can see it in California because there's forty million people. Almost 1/5 of the US population. But this exists all over America. Haters can deny it's everywhere, but they're seriously lying. Texas, West Virginia, idaho, everywhere. The bigger the state. The bigger the problem. Covid just made inequality more visible. Get over it. Or, vote blue down the line to stop Republicans from creating this mess with their greed and corruption. Democrats hold some responsibility and complacency. BIDEN 2024 !!!!

Yeap. Come to Fresno. I live in the straight up hood, surrounded by people that don't speak my language. That doesn't bother me, they're just trying to have a decent life. Even the gang members don't trip as long as you carry yourself like you aren't weak and be respectful.( And learn what colors not to wear, no blue and no Dodgers gear) The homeless live right down the street, half crazy from whatever. I see the same happening in Canada. There are no proper jobs for it's own people and the country wants to bring in loads and loads of immigrants and students for dirt cheap labor. Add to that the thousands of fake asylum seekers who just cross into the country from the US who are put up in star hotels everything paid for by the government.

Many if not most homeless don’t want to be taken off the street. California has spent billions on the homeless and the problem is worst. In the 1980’s the metal health hospitals across the US were closed. Those you see on the street today would have been involuntarily admitted decades ago. So the help you think these homeless need is actual forced hospitalization and that will never happen. Refugees and immigrants typically add to US society, the homeless are on the other side of that coin.

When I was a kid in the 70's, there were horse ranches everywhere, that you could rent horses and ride trails, in the middle of Los Angeles County. By 2005, they had pretty much done away with horse ranches, and turned it into condominium neighborhoods. They had movie theaters in every city, even Drive-In movies, skate rinks, ice skating rink (Kings Hockey team training center), Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, and Magic Mountain close by. Easy access to the beaches, closeby snow and water skiing places, and campgrounds. It was a wonderful place to grow up. But now, you couldn't pay me to live there.

San Diego has a bad homeless problem, but nothing like LA or the Bay Area. It is trying to turn things around. The city council just passed an ordinance to ban camping on public areas near schools, parks and other prominent locations. Homeless are being offered alternatives for shelter with secured parking lots for those sleeping in cars/campers and barracks-like shelters on unused city land. It is a step in the right direction.

The rabbits in their polished home, the grass patches the beautiful space that was made for them on the streets of LA, literally brought me to tears. I never wanted to be in LA husband insisted spent decades being very unhappy there, it got so so bad and sadly also very scarily the homeless became violent as well psychotic in many cases. Left Cal but it's creeping through the country " it " being The Struggle, that many of us are facing ..I don't look down on the homeless. I know if they weren't on drugs when they got there, they were pretty soon. Dull the pain of their hopelessness. We are in a big mess in this country.I love touring it with your channel. There are solutions there must be!! there could be if states and the federal government pitch on plans and put them into effect. Will the homeless want to change? We don't know to what degree they will accept help. I'm sure the people in the tent with the kids' toys out front would, though, 🙏

Covid hit, they kept her in a bed for 3 years without ever seeing the sun. Her hip has rotted away from her body & the state is trying to steal her home. A home she's owned since 1979. I now am planning a trip back next week & it's all I can do to keep my crap together, knowing, there isn't much we can do. The system is a mess. To all the people stating they left California to go to nicer places or are from nicer places and were appalled by CA, please keep in mind it tends to be a precedent setting state. These problems will soon be everywhere. I grew up in California and witnessed the many mistakes made and resultant problems. They should be learning lessons for other places, not something to “escape from”. And as California works to solve these problems, those learning lessons and the results should also be observed to help other places solve these problems. Planning criteria is carefully studied and our planning documents on all levels are typically well-written. The problem is we don’t follow them. We know the impacts of urbanization, we know the impacts of lack of affordable housing and displacement, we know the consequences of not providing adequate care for our vets and the mentally ill, we know the consequences of not providing adequate open space or preserving public lands and balancing zoning to manage land use thoughtfully, we know the consequences of not providing adequate access to jobs when we isolate people in poverty or affordable housing and don’t provide transportation to opportunities for education and jobs as well as community resources like healthcare and libraries, we know the consequences of over-development and allowing vacation rentals and second homes to be prioritized over local resident housing, we know the consequences of ignoring how small businesses benefit local economies more than large corporate interests (mom and pop vs walmart), we know the consequences of medical crisis and how it can bankrupt the middle class, we know the consequences of policy allowing the wealth gap to continue to grow (that’s public policy though not planning)…. But my point being. We have the proper planning in place and they are living documents that can be revised and adapted to address changing conditions and are intended to anticipate things like population growth. But greed, corruption, organized crime (cartels especially), over consumption, classist attitudes, stigmatization, and in general the illogical assumption that these outcomes are due to lack of “moral fortitude” on the part of those who suffer the consequences the most, as well as political lobbying and persuasion has resulted in the breakdown of what could be functioning very well. Read your planning documents and pay attention to lobbying interests not political speeches. It’s a grab for money. Instead of a well-orchestrated and planned community with proper and ethical management of land and resources. Scratching backs and doing favors and gaining power and position and status and wealth in a rigged competitive system instead of allowing for a truly competitive system to help us evolve and grow and learn from our mistakes. California is a learning lesson. This will spread out. Escaping it is like trying to run from cancer. Leaving it behind while never learning from it to make sure you don’t help it spread out….

And yes adequate social systems are important. California faced many challenges. Rapid urbanization, industries that brought gentrification, high rates of immigration requiring social services, primary ports and borders of entry for drug trafficking and black market weapons trading, blight and loss of jobs in working class areas during periods of inflation and economic fluctuations (that led to gang violence and further strengthen the cartels and weapons trading), high demands on resources and public services AND DON’T FORGET A HUGE INFLUX OF POPULATION GROWTH FROM OTHER STATES AND COUNTRIES DIRECTLY BECAUSE IT WAS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL, HEALTHY, GREAT PLACE TO LIVE AND RAISE A FAMILY with some of the best agriculture in the world, diverse landscapes and climates, and access to one of the most incredible systems of federal and state parks available to the public. One of the reasons it got “ruined” is because so many people came to EXPLOIT it and did not take care of it. Now everyone dogs on it but forgets it became this way because it was THAT place everyone was California dreaming of….and moved to to enjoy and benefit from the many opportunities. No hate, but keep this in mind because the migration out of California to “better” places, will also have consequences to those places you are migrating to… take care of the places you live and pay attention to your planning documents and public policies. And forget about which “side” of politics you are on. The wealthiest in this country are the ones who control the politics… via lobbying. So whether it’s solar power or a petroleum steam plant …. Your vote will be persuaded to enrich whoever is going to be enriched … even if it isn’t actually in the public’s best interest. Not preaching, and it’s hard to be cohesive typing on a small screen in a small box, but just expressing what I hope helps because we can learn from this and help other communities through those learning lessons. AKA Do what is best for everyone and not just ourselves…. It wasn’t best for everyone to let tech take over the Bay Area. That should have been managed better. It wasn’t best for everyone to tear down the affordable housing in San Francisco to build nice restaurants for wealthy people to enjoy, it wasn’t best for everyone to allow vacation rentals and excessive second homes in our resort towns and create a housing crisis, it wasn’t best for everyone to trade our domestically produced weapons with the cartels, it wasn’t best for everyone to allow for urban sprawl, it wasn’t best for everyone to steal the water to grow Southern California into a Mecca of concrete and pavement and lawns and golf courses. People are selfish and only care about what is best for themselves. And when it gets bad they don’t work to solve the problems; they leave and take those problems elsewhere. Hopefully we learned because the consequences have been devastating. This is my home and on my father’s side we are generations and generations deep. La Jolla fishermen, LA and San Bernardino Chief Fire Engineers, and also helped build Mammoth Mountain when it was a small community for the middle class to enjoy. It was and is a beautiful state that grows more food for the country than any other state. That has a wealth of natural resources to benefit from and enjoy. That has a critical economy for the entire country and of substantial power globally. It has some of our most important ports in the nation. Some of the most incredible feats of engineering, the best roadway engineers and maintenance in the country, et al. It is an incredible place. The poverty shown in this film is not the problem, it is the symptom showing up from the problems created by not doing what was best for everyone and and excessive influx of people who wanted to “live the California dream”, and anyways I said too much and didn’t get it concise and clear but hopefully some of this is helpful. If not, feel free to criticize or clarify better…

From the dictatorial Algeria, in which we are starving now, I still dream of living in America with humility and subsisting on food, even if it is a little. I ask a question: Why do you abandon America, which once fed you, and everyone knows that it is a country that wastes its money on military arsenals and attacking countries from Yes, oil, not pumping public money to support the purchasing power of the individual. I still dream of living in it if one of its honorable residents receives me. As for the current difficulties, they will pass and the beautiful day will come in America or anywhere else. I also advise people who are greedy to launder money not to enter America again. Because they are ungrateful. Greetings to the loyal American people from Algeria

I had jury duty last week in Kansas City, KS. Looked as if the courthouse fell out of the sky on top of the ghetto. Of course this is the case in many cities in the US including my state capital. This is sad to see. Some points come to mind. I am from Mumbai, India. We have the largest slum in Asia, but within that are ppl with all amenities, incldg fridge, ACs, computers etc but no 'proper housing'. Some places have community toilets, etc, but in this video, I see nothing of the kind. I see 2 issues: 1. Hiding a reality doesn't work. If it's public, people will help (like we do in India, we keep talking about it, and government listens). 2. Imagine this! In 20 years, the US government wasted $2 trillion in Afghan war only to replace Taliban with Taliban If half that money was spent here, it'd have kept lives liveable But... the Miltary Establishment has more 'urgent' issues. Sad!

Seeing what has become of my home state just tears me in two. I was born in Los Angeles and grew up middle class in the East San Gabriel Valley about 20 miles east of LA. Mom was born and raised in LA, and my dad was from eastern Ohio. Our neighborhood was working class, lots of families from all over ethnically. My maternal grandparents lived nearby and I spent as much time there as at my own home. Rode my bike all over the place, enjoyed the climate and we kids had a good life. But somewhere along the way, apparently things were changing, and mom didn't like it. By the late 70s she was urging my dad to plan to move north. So we uprooted and moved hundreds of miles, and it was a culture shock for me. It was only a temporary fix, as same issues cropped up a few years down the line. Left for the military in 1985, came back after, moved away for good in 1993. I miss what was, what could have been, what should still be.

I am a long time California resident. I can tell you that all that you see here is the reality of our state now. It’s shocking. The homeless epidemic is unbelievable. Nobody can afford housing and most industries packed up and left due to taxes and labor costs. There is not much gray area between poverty and elitism. I am middle class, and make a decent living, but had I not bought a house 10 years ago I couldn’t afford in today’s economy. Also, many wealthier people own multiple homes and they only rent them out as VRBO for crazy amounts of money. A working class person cannot afford rent. Small towns are in dire condition as well. Companies such as Amazon destroyed small companies. They cannot compete so they are boarding up. It’s a nightmare scenario.

@@billy-il8tdyou can keep voting whatever you want, the two party system is truly f-ed. There is no way out if it because both parties are corrupt and LOVE the money they get from big corporations. Neither of them care to better the living conditions of the poor… because taking advantage of people and their work load is what got them their wealth! The only thing that could fix it would be a TRUE government and system change. The US suffers from capitalism in the terminal stage. THIS is where no public healthcare, good public education and no unions in big companies lead you to… Workers rights in the US are the equivalent to those of the 1850 basically everywhere else? The American dream is for the rich to get and stay rich and for everyone else? Well the rest gets poorer by the minute. And what are all citizens fed? The lie that if you just work hard enough you will be at the top one day… but that is not how it works. No one working 3 jobs will ever get there because those jobs? 95% if what you generate goes straight into your bosses pocket, if you’re lucky you get 2% of that as your salary and that’s without tax deductions. Those jobs were not made to get you wealthy or even provide a good life, they were meant to generate more wealth for the higher ups… But somehow the US managed to tell her citizens that lie and profited off of it! Not only do people work hard and harder because they want to "make" it, generating a lot of wealth. NO! They are also against everything that might sound even a little bit "communist" like paying for a good general education everyone can benefit from or public healthcare that actually is worth its money! No, they are also against unions! THE tool against big companies taking advantage of you, the tool to fight for worker rights… because people don’t want to restrict the power of the 1% in fear that once they "made it" they would also be restricted! It’s truly f-ed up! Americans going against their own people, against themselves, suffering greatly from it, WILLINGLY, because they still dream about being super rich and they don’t want them to lose their privileges in fear they would also not have them when they get there… The truth is, they will never get there and instead of being realistic about it they rather relax, lay back while being fed bullshit and actively sabotage any attempt to make life better for the middle and lower classes…

Sadly this is happening in cities all across the country. And often people don't find themselves homeless because of a drug or alcohol problem. But once they've been out there awhile they turn to that to numb themselves to the feelings of anxiety, fear, helplessness, desperation etc. The cost of living has out paced the availability of jobs in this country that pay a high enough wage to live on. People constantly say "Get a job". But what job? Not everyone has the intelligence to do the kind of work that actually pays well. (The idea that anyone can do anything, they just need an education simply isn't true. My husband has been teaching a beginner college level programming class for the last six years. Every semester he has 25-30 students. Only two or three ever pass. Most of them just can't do the work.) We gutted the lower and middle class jobs over the last 40 years. If we don't redesign the work structure we'll eventually have only the rich, and the rest of us will all be homeless.

Homelessness in America has NOTHING to do with government corruption. The real problem is that the US Constitution in no way mandates that the Fed Govt is responsible for the welfare of The People. I only realized that recently when I discovered FDR's proposal for an Economic Bill of Rights in 1945, just before he died. These were a set of Constitutional Amendments that would guarantee all citizens a place to live, a job, medical care, education, and more. However, this idea died with FDR. Reality is that among the various "rights" that Americans enjoy are the Right to Starve to Death, and the Right To Be Homeless, all with no government interference. Lucky us !!! Consider that NONE of the food banks and soup kitchens either now or going back to the Great Depression have been supplied or run by the Govt, but but by private charities and private donations.

I serviced, repaired & calibrated instrumentation used in textiles, automotive, paint, food & clothing all over Canada until a couple of years ago. One place which stuck in my mind is the headquarters of Lululemon in Vancouver. It is located a stone throw from Hastings St. The well known homeless area with needle exchanges & safe injection sites... inside the super fancy office it was incredibly opulent... but that was after you went through double layer steel doors & bars. I always found it obscene that the rich woukd go about their day but seemingly never even notice the dreggs of society all over the pavements outside their luxury offices & and multi-million $$ apartments.

David, nice name. It means “Beloved of God”. My name is David too. Look, the rich know what is going on, but what are they to do? I’m not apologist for rich people. Would be nice to be rich too. But, a lot of rich can’t do much for these people. See, prosperity begins in the heart and the mind. It begins when one takes responsibility for his or her life, not blaming others. Yes, there are times some can hurt us. But, most of the time our hurts and failures are part of our decisions. Yes we can give plenty of money to others in the hope money will lift them out of poverty. But, no matter how much money is given no amount can make up for someone refusing to help themselves. Give a man a fish everyday and he will always be dependent on you. Teach a man to fish and he can get himself food all the days of his life. See even in teaching the man still he must decide to fish. All revolves around taking care for one’s own life. Now I’m not heartless. The Bible says “He who gives to the poor lends to the Lord.”. I have given to the poor. What I don’t do is give a drunk a drink, or supply needles and other drug supplies to addicts. This is helping poor people? That’s insane! No amount of money can make a person walk responsibly. They alone must make the choice. No amount of caring for the poor soul will make them stand up. We extend the hand but them must hold of it. 🤔✝️🇺🇸

Just so incredibly sad on many levels. I saw how bad it was getting in Fresno CA back in the 90's and lots of that was from the ICE epidemic, looks like that problem has just spread out everywhere and now way worse. Why isn't Biden doing something about this, these are the people who voted him in.

Biden, "*snort* - you people really have no clue, do you? This has been going on since the population boom starting with the Industrial age. Just what do you expect "Biden" to do? What about tRumpus? What would he do? I say, tag 'em, sterilize 'em, ship 'em down to the border (there's lots of good stuff down there that the immigrants were given, but they had to leave because they were going on an f'ing bus - you ever ridden the bus? It sux) - if they try to return, pick 'em up with the GPS tag. It's sad when you have 100,000's immigrants WANT to work but can't because they have to wait 6-9 mos. to be processed. These people are given $100's of dollars worth of resources - maybe the reason they're the way they are is because they are filthy hoarders. I was homeless - twice. My sh*t was tight! I would never camp out near such people. They draw too much attention. And filth: cholera and e. coli from improper disposal of poo. I had a self - composting toilet just for this reason. The government - what world did you just wake up from, Buttercup? YOU are the Government... here's yer clue.

All right, I'll bite. I know, you're just trolling. But: I worked for local and statewide political campaigns for nearly 20 years in two different states. At different times, we did all kinds of voter outreach to various communities. The vast majority of homeless people, of the type that you would find living on a street somewhere, do not vote. Voting is something engaged people do. It's really that simple. Sometimes a well-meaning outreach effort will register some homeless people to vote. A couple of years later, another one will pass through, looking for those people (who generally haven't voted in the meantime), and might find a handful of them still alive and around. Homeless people didn't vote Joe Biden in. 81 million other people did, though.

And yet, remember that even prior to WW2, such things as the Great Depression were happening, and slavery, and so much more. America has never been, nor will it ever be, a paradise everywhere for all people at all times. There are always challenges. And suffering is always a part of things. Also, this video involves a lot of cherry-picking to show some of the worst spots. I am an American from a poor region in Colorado and recently moved to Slovakia to be with my wife, who is Slovak. I miss the US! I see its value more now than I did while it was all I knew, especially in the basic core value of freedom. People don't realize how good it is in so many ways, even now, even where it isn't so glamorous. The American approach to life is still worth fighting for.
