Saving $60 every 1400 miles. Add that up over the lifetime of ownership (140K miles) and it's more like $6000.00 on gas alone. Also, oil changes once every 2 years vs every 5K miles, brakes that usually won't ever need replaced.

A car that is designed to have a backup plan, is one that also includes some very throughtful bicycle pedals/gears that are hinged to drop down from underneath the dashboard. Just some minor advice from an EV driver: 1. If the station is billing by the minute instead of per kWh, don't charge to 99% unless you really need it. Your charge rate will be very high at the start of the charge session then will taper down drastically toward the end, especially above 90% or so(charge curve depends on the car.) Watch your kW charge rate throughout the charge session to see when it starts tapering down to a ridiculously slow speed, then unplug and leave so you charge more often, but at maximum speeds. 2. Swipe to charge in the app THEN plug in and it will work every time. Much quicker to start the charge that way because there's no waiting for prompts on the charge station.

Also, manually activate the Rex at 25% or more, especially when coming up to mountains and hilly terrain so you don't get so low you lose power. The secret is you have to code it that you can turn the range extender on at 75%....i always do that when i drive on the highway. It would take hours of driving at constant 90 plus miles an hour to drain the battery while using gas. But if you let the range extender come on at 6% you of course get his horrible results. In two years of owning my 2015 irex i never had his issues. After two hours on the highway with the rex on driving 80 i might fall from 75 to 70 after 2 hours of driving.....

Gas being at 2.39 it costs pretty much the same to run the hybrid and ev. Way I see it the ev would cost more since I'll have to be spending extra nights at a hotel since you can't just go non stop and motels ain't $5. And the rex isnt efficient, gets around 37-40mpg. I just love the look and aesthetic of the i3, one of the best looking post 90's BMW imo. Just wished it was a gas car or hybrid. Always wanted one.

It is the perfect gateway car for the general public to transition over to an EV life. All of the range anxiety issues including driving in the mountains are eliminated. Just gas it up and go. Driving in mountains no prob! Engage mountain mode about 20 mins before the climb and the generator will build up an extra reserve to ensure enough power is there to get over the crest. No slowdowns etc I applaud you for taking this on with an i3. Not sure if I'd do the same with this car but want to thank you for showing us it's possible 😊 Hopefully the next version of this car will have a much higher capacity battery to help eliminate the range anxiety

Yes the reason they disable the 1/2 gallon of gas in the tank would be the fact that in the US, gasoline engines under 2 gallons do not need to adhere to EPA CARB regulations. So by limiting the full capacity to 1.9gal exempts the little motor from needing a costly and complex emissions system like a catalytic converter, smog pump, EGR, and such.

Welcome to Cali Randy. this posted on the 19th so you are probably back in OK by now. you are probably seeing the greasiest part of our state. I live in central Ca, Fresno to be exact. It is mostly farmland around here. I don't go to LA anymore. I just can't stand the freeway's down there. I use to go there in April every year for the all Ford meet at Knotts berry farm, but they moved where they originally had it and I havn't gone since. I am looking forward to the rest of the vids of this adventure. We have a Co-part here in Fresno where as a Dealer I use to go and bid on cars ( picked up a snazzy 66 Mustang once ) so if you are ever here you could go there and feel right at home.

Many people install a diesel cab heater in electric cars , because the cars climate control uses so much power, and dosent really get hot, warm at best in many cases

This video is definitely not positive for the electric car market. 😂 Between the range anxiety, broken recharging stations, and choosing between comfort or maintaining the battery level...I wouldn't be able to enjoy a thing! Glad that tumbleweed didn't total your new ride. 🤣🤣🤣

I have a 2018 I3 with REX. It is amazing for back and forth trips to work, and local driving. Haven’t spent a dime in gas, or oil changes, radiator flushes, etc. It is the future. The battery tech is getting better each year. This is the future. Fossil fuels will be a thing of the past for automobiles in the near future…

If this is the future, I’ll stay here in the past.

I enjoyed the video Randy - that was very gutsy of you to undertake such a long trip in an EV - must have been nerve-wracking. I think batteries will need to provide a much long range before EVs become a realistic choice for most people - however that will happen quickly as manufacturers move closer to a switchover to full electric power which is only 10 to 15 years away. I'm looking forward to the return trip. Thanks for making a video outside the square - well done.

Your absolutely right! I won’t be buying a BMW i3 at all. They can keep their electric vehicle 🚗

Yeah, you might’ve saved a few bucks. You can probably buy a couple of big Mac meals. But the stress that you encountered that the body takes trying to look for a damn charger is priceless.

That car is designed as a City car, it was never designed to do long road trips. Electric cars generally don’t like highway driving, they can’t regenerate from braking.

Unless your highway drive is down a mountain of course.

I grew up in California, never driven cross-country, I thought these inspection stations were normal until recently. But welcome, the west coast is beautiful!

I am from California but grew up in Oklahoma. In the '80s my family went on a trip to AZ and when we came back into California through the inspection station they asked us if we had any fruit and my mom said yes some bananas and other fruit. They told us to pull over in another lane and searched us like we were at the mexican border. They took all the fruit which was only a few pieces like they were drugs. I guess they are afraid of fruit flies or something. I'll always remember that. They even had those drug dogs sniff the VW van we were in....
