I Drove Through Philadelphia. This Is What I Saw

There aren't very many nice places in downtown Philadelphia. This is one of them.
For this edition of dashboard tours, I drove through downtown Philadelphia. Sadly, it was a cold and dreary and kinda rainy afternoon. The day was Tuesday, March 16, 2021 at about 2 pm
Philadelphia is one of the oldest cities in the country. It was founded in 1682. Here’s the route I chose. It begins on the west side of downtown, winds around the city hall and other government buildings in the heart of the city, and then tracks east through midtown village and Old City. We’ll see an interesting mix of government buildings, historical architecture, some shopping and dining and a few neighborhoods.
I found Philadelphia to be a really dirty city. The parts I’m showing here are fine, but as you wind your way into different pockets of downtown and the fringes of downtown, things are NOT very clean. 10358. Here’s a quick look at how things look just a 5 minute drive from the downtown area we’re going to see for this driving tour. Most of the perimeters of Philadelphia are certainly not like downtown proper.

I absolutely LOVE Philly. I have been there only once (1997) as I live and am from Michigan (born in Detroit, grew up in northern Michigan-Cheboygan County-, and now live in Genesee County-61 miles north-northwest of Detroit), but I absolutely agree with you. I have been to Center City (I thought locals didn't refer to it as 'downtown'), the South Philly Sports Complex, and South Street - shops and Jim's Steaks. However the city looks so much different with the Comcast Center, and they Comcast Innovation Center. Lincoln Financial Field, Xfinity Live, and Citizens Bank Park weren't built when I was last there, either. Philly seems like a hybrid of NYC, Detroit, Baltimore, and a little Chicago sprinkled in.

It's all perspective..When you are IN Center City or looking for your bus stop or El stop, it is "Center City" describing a general area that has relatively undefined boundaries. Even people two blocks away from City Hall call City Hall Center City because the actual center is considered to be City Hall. When you are headed there from the north, it is referred to as downtown, in town or into town depending on how close you are it seems. If standing on a huge rock looking south and you see large buildings but you're not headed there, its Center City.. HEY LOOK, there's Center City!! Not sure what South Philly people call it... Funny, we generally gave the city nicknames depending on how we get there from where we are at. And they have stuck. An unwritten geographic identification that you had better know..Now, more importantly, try to find the lines in the street that identify what lane you are supposed to be in while dodging manhole covers... Good luck man!!!

Lifelong Philadelphian here. People just love to hate on Philly but you 'd be hard pressed to find a better place to be, especially these days. Things that go overlooked in countless other cities are front page national news here. Don't know where the hate comes from but, if you want some damn good food and some of the best beer in the country, and smartest sports fans as well. This is where it's at!

Philly might be the single most underrated large city in North America. Huge, bustling downtown with some really beautiful architecture. It's really cleaned up the last 10 years and there's so many new developments, eventually it will be the next Chicago or Toronto. Center City maybe the the cleanest, but it is not the only nice area in Philadelphia. South Philly, Fishtown and parts of Northeast Philly may not be as sanitized as Center City for sure. However they are safe, vibrant and bustling neighborhoods with a lot to offer.

There is crime and trash (cups on streets) in parts of philly where it can be deemed sketchy. However, I do agree that there is some areas in philly that are nicer than expected. Near the stadiums even is nice homes. I live close by and I legit see the good that’s there.

He’s not very good. He missed stating City Hall’s worldwide prominence. And he failed to note that he was passing the birthplace of the nation. Kelly Drive is noted as one of the most beautiful entryways to a downtown area in the world. And our colonial architecture? Society Hill? Nothing. Missing here - Most older US cities are FAR better explored on foot, or by public trans. Philadelphia is a renowned driving nightmare, and the route of this video, though showing the density in office highrise district, misses all of the residential ‘hoods. I’m not saying that Philadelphia is w/o shortcomings and distinct problems. But it is a functional and (to many) desirable urban place to call home. In most instances, you miss 99% of its appeal by driving a car through the center of 9-5 corporate business district.

Amd for a portion of that i was buying heroin in Kenso....... Nowadays it's more at the Democrats feet but Republicans have their fair share of issues (not using money when it's needed for one or delegating too much to specific things that don't need it for decades, like the War chest) but most of the issues today are Demcorat policies that are wasting money (Critical race theory, global warming/climate change (very little human activity affects either, it's mostly just a cyclic pattern that will happen with or with humans and cannot be stopped no matter what we do...at best we can aim to enhance current technology so it pollutes less but that's about it...cause as far as pollution goes we know it creates harmful chemicals for the human body so i can go along with the pollution hurts humans route more so than CO2 will kill the earth via climate change route), let everyone through the border, defund the police, etc) rather than fixing issues that need it (border, infrastructure, economy, actually helping the police force do their jobs and give them means to prove their innocence or guilt (via body camera on all officers that are on at all times while on the clock for one), passing laws that would reform/create new ports and make things move faster/hire more people, reform immigration system to make processing them faster, etc). Personally i want a new party/coalition of non party affiliated candidates to take power and push actual common sense policies rather than the trash our current politicians pass.

After reading the comments about Philadelphia, I may consider wanting to move there later on since it's close to NYC to be close to friends and family. Any suggestions on what part of Philadelphia is a good place to live? I know Kensington is a high crime area in Philly.

It all depends on what you prefer: Condo, Row Home, do you want a yard? Do you want to be in the thick of everything, a quieter neighborhood in city or a close suburb? Will you have a car? Price range is also a factor (it’s a lot cheaper than anywhere in NYC)

@@mmcdonald1000 There’s great suburban areas outside the city but for a single home, even if it’s small, can be more expensive the closer to the city you get (which is true wherever.) Conshocken (closer to Northwest Philly), Jenkintown (closer to North/Northeast Philly)are close to the city but leafy (kinda looks like New Rochelle, if you can picture that) Homes are older but pretty. Then you have town in Bucks county (really close to Trenton & a quick train to NYC.) Depending on the neighborhood, the homes are newer but you’re a bit further from downtown (Center City) Philly. Huntington Valley, Wynnewood… All great areas. There’s also nice neighborhoods in the northeast section of the city, with single homes, of all sizes (kinda similar to Staten Island) Most important, they’re safe neighborhoods. I thankfully never actually saw I raccoon (I’d literally have a heart attack 😂) but they go into your trash if the let isn’t on tight enough! If possible, take a trip and set up showings. Philadelphia has very high crime and poverty rate. But it’s mainly confined to certain areas like most large cities. There are a number of nice neighborhoods, but they are in pockets and always walking distance to a bad area.

An episode that perfectly illustrates Philadelphia drivers. I was at a red light that just turned green, but there was a pedestrian crossing the street, so I had to wait a few seconds before I could move. Wouldn't you know it, but several cars behind me immediately starting blaring their horns because I didn't immediately start moving when the light turned. What did they want me to do, run down the pedestrian? Just one of the many everyday reasons that I moved awayat age 18 and won't live in that area ever again. There's just too much anger and hostility in that city.

What is shown is very nice, but a very small part. If you live in NE Philly it could take you 20-30 minutes driving JUST to get to center city, and even longer to South Philly. Cant say anything about all of these but as far as NE Philly it's progressively gotten worse and worse in regards to crime/sanitation over the past 2 and half decades that i've lived here. Used to be safe but nowadays not paying attention to everyone around here is just as likely to get you robbed/assaulted as the bad areas of the city. Drug selling has also increased quite a bit even in my own neighborhood that used to not have that issue when i was a kid. Give it another decade or two with the way the politicians are running this city and it'll be as bad as Kensington in about 75%, or more, of the city. It's pretty much at the point where you want to look for somewhere to move out to/gather cash to move out for the next few years. Hell on my own block almost all the people that lived here have moved out in the last year due to how unsafe it's gradually becoming on top of poor leadership by our politicians causing prices to skyrocket for no good reason (prices and wages shouldn't be as bad as they are if the politicians were running things right...all of their policies have been fucking growth opportunities for all citizens of Philly...granted Biden's Admin is more or less doing it country wide as well but Blue areas following his BS are having it worse of all). Won't say the neighborhoods are 'bad' yet but they're not 'great' either...at best they're 'ok ' and nothing more than that.

I'm from Philly. Typical an out of towner says the only parts of Philadelphia that are nice is just downtown. 😒 other than market Street alone you forgot Reading Terminal Market (Yes still downtown but I don't see it here). South Street although cluttered with traffic it's a nice area to walk through to eat and shop. Less we forget about South Broad Street where the sport teams stadiums are. It's a nice neighborhood very quiet unless there is a game and the food there one block up onto Snyder Ave has an abundance of food and shopping choices. Again, traffic is cluttered as with any big city but other than that walking through the area is fairly nice. 13th street downtown is Chinatown. Not as great as New York Chinatown but they have a lot of little boutique shops and the people there are nice. Northeast Philly you have the Franklin Mills Mall now called Philadelphia Mills. Further up you have Nashaminy. The mall there is nice. The neighborhood is super quiet. The well off live up there. The Nashaminy state park is nice during the summer. I would go on with more but then I'll be here forever. Point is, you missed out on a lot of good places in Philadelphia. Yeah my hometown has a high crime rate and it's sad to see but you portray that Philadelphia is all bad in almost every neighborhood when in fact it is not. Research this place some more sir.

Life long resident of Philadelphia. 75% of the city is dirty and" F" up including UNIVERSITY CITY AND CENTER CITY the area you drove through. So called " Mid town village" is a real estate marketing catch phrase used by NEW YORK CITY DEVELOPERS who have now invaded the city and "F" up the real estate market in this town. Dude you only went down 2 major roadways Its a town of neighborhoods. But its cool. Glad you didn't "explore" the TRUE city. Hopefully people in those neighborhoods can protect it from outsiders. Back in 1987 I married a US Army soldier who was born & raised in Philly. We met when he was stationed at Ft. Ord, California. About 10 months after, I went to meet his family (& childhood friends) for the 1st time. His best friend greeted me by saying "Hi, welcome to Filth-a-delphia!" Everyone laughed & I just smiled since i had no idea what he meant... Until we moved there a few years later, when my now ex-husband got out of the military. I managed to survive there (barely) for 2 years before I finally threw in the towel & said no more! We boarded a plane bound for the west coast & never looked back other than to attend a funeral in 1998.
