This was once a thriving living community. People worked here, went to school and church. Prime example of how one industry took advantage of poor Americans and this is what is left behind. Worked around there in the Oil Exploration business in 1980. It looked bad then too.

It seems like pretty white flowers bloom on the green grass and the rain sings the joy of spring coming, but when I see the many old houses built in a row along the narrow valley road between the mountains, my heart feels heavy.

WOW, i am going to look at a house for sale in Rock in a few days---Matoaka Rd, Rock, WV 24747, house itself has VERY nice wood floors, cabinets, etc with over .6 of an acre, some seriously nice woodworking inside

There are areas right across the Hudson River from NYC in New Jersey that are far more depressing than this. There are houses on top of houses, telephone poles and power lines everywhere, trash and streets so narrow you can hardly drive a car through them. At least these folk have nature.

I was in southern West Virginia last week and where I live in eastern North Carolina is just as poor. We are just closer to larger cities here like Greenville and Raleigh but it's common to see people living in old ragged farm houses up a dirt path here.

A flash flood would wash those houses away, I live on the gulf coast of Florida and it happens here, especially when you live close to a stream, creek or even the river.

Lots of long houses built along the road. I believe that these were hotels or rooming houses for single coal miners.
