I Drove Through The WORST Parts Of Pittsburgh. This Is What I Saw.

What is happening in America? Pittsburgh suburbs are a total wasteland!
The last stop on our road trip 2019/2020 was in the city of Pittsburgh. We took I-79 south through pretty rolling Pennsylvania countryside, which had been recently snowed upon. However, this winter has been an unusually warm one in this region, and the temperature was a balmy 40 degrees.
We pulled into Pittsburgh on Thursday, January 9, 2020 at 2 in the afternoon.
In today’s video, we’ll give you a brief rundown on the city of Pittsburgh, share a few insights and a couple of experiences. Then, we’ll take you to a Pittsburgh suburb, which was perhaps the absolute worst place I’ve ever seen in person.
Pittsburgh is located at the convergance of the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio Rivers. The whole Pittsburgh metro area is surrounded by hills. The city made it name in the steel industry, hence the big steel bridges and the city’s football team, the Steelers.
Pittsburgh is a very poor city, and we’ll get a look at that in a minute. But it has SOME rich people. Particularly in the Shadyside and North Squirrel Hill neighborhoods. Here’s North Squirrel Hill. This is the richest neighborhood in Pittsburgh where residents earn about $100,000 a year on average, and homes cost about $500,000.
This is shadyside, a modern chic neighborhood with upscale shopping and dining. Women wear their yoga pants to lunch here, even in foot deep snow.
The food is decent. I didn’t get a chance to try the Pittsburgh version of the Cheesesteak, but I DID have perhaps the best sandwich I’ve ever had at a place called Pork and Beans downtown. It was called their classic, and was composed of primarily beef brisket and cheese. I didn’t think to take a picture of it until it was gone.
I also ran into a guy who wore WAY too much cologne who I swore is on the Pittsburgh Steelers. I should have asked him.
Of course we didn’t come here to walk around downtown. We came to see the WORST part of town. I had originally planned to film two northeast pittsburgh slums - areas called Homewood and Larimer, which I had heard resemble the gutted out areas we had seen in other dying rust belt communities.
But in downtown, I asked a friendly bartender in what she thought of Homewood and Larimer. She told me if I REALLY wanted to see the WORST areas of Pittsburgh, I needed to see the south side. She said it was one of the most dangerous cities in the country - a place called McKeesport.
Whenever there’s a shooting or a crime or all the cops go somewhere, it’s in McKeesport, she said.
So the next day, we went off to Mckeesport to see what all the fuss was about.
McKeesport is a tiny city that’s only about 10 miles south of Pittsburgh, but because the region is so hilly, getting there takes nearly 30 minutes on windy, sad, beaten up roads.
Just like every other former steel town, McKeesport was hit hard when steel makers left the region. This city once had more than 50,000 people, but now, it has less than 20,000.
Here’s another cop. We saw 5 in the 20 minutes we spent driving around.
There are many other areas on Pittsburgh’s fringes like McKeesport - but not nearly so dangerous or destitute. This is another area 10 minutes from McKeesport on the city’s east side. Pittsburgh’s whole east side of pockmarked with crime and poor rundown neighborhoods.
We also visited the original ghetto hoods we had planned to visit. Here’s a look at Homewood and Larmer on Pittsburgh’s northeast side.
These places need help. They need a community leader to step up and do something or these places are going to disappear one day, as everyone either flees or dies.
These neighborhoods are just a small glimpse as to what it looks like when a city like Pittsburgh goes from a population of 700,000 to 300,000 in only about 60 years.
The rust belt tour was over. We had witnessed places like East St Louis, Lansing, Buffalo and Pittsburgh and how the loss of industry and a shrinking economy has made these cities sad, dangerous, empty and soulless. These places don’t look like America of the 1950s. They don’t even look like they should be in America at all.
As I pulled back into Raleigh, the following day, I was greeted by a muggy, party sunny sky, a far cry from the cold I had experienced for the past three weeks. But nowhere near as cold as it should have been. The green colors and overall positive vibes were welcome. It was nice to be home.

A couple of things: 1) To call Pittsburgh "very poor" and a dying rust-belt city shows that you clearly haven't done your research 2) McKeesport isn't even a part of Pittsburgh, so you have not in fact driven through the "worst parts of Pittsburgh". You are correct that McKeesport is not a part of Pittsburgh, but it does directly border it.I always considered the people there as Pittsburghers just as myself growing up in a town less than a 10 minute ride south of downtown.

I live in White Oak, which is intertwined with Mckeesport( I work in Mckeesport)and everyone here considers themselves Pittsburgh residents. The Pittsburgh area are so intersected that it blends without knowing until you see signs.

There are several municipalities between the city of Pittsburgh and McKeesport. Residents don’t pay taxes to the city or go to through the city’s public school district. Not a part of the city.

I will die on the hill that Pittsburgh is one of the greatest little gems of the US. Ive traveled by car to every corner of this country and Pittsburgh is in my top 5. Its humble, research based, cleaned up, walkable, affordable, beautiful with great people and vibrant activities. And this part outside of it? Nothing I haven’t seen before. In fact, way worse in St. Louis or Bmore.

As a Clevelander, Pittsburgh is one of my favorite cities I've ever been to, and lived in. I lived in and went to school in Pittsburgh for a couple years 2002-2004 and I loved the city! It was safe everywhere. You could walk around in the early, early morning without a care at all! I can NOT say the same about Cleveland, especially East Cleveland! That being said, I've never been to Mckeesport, but I'm sure it's safe and lovely as Switzerland compared to East Cleveland. For the record, nothing terrible has ever happened to me in EC, but I wouldn't want to walk around there alone after dark. You'll *PROBABLY* be OK, but... I've heard stories.

I'm Pittsburgh born, Atlanta raised and was in Cleveland for the first time in 1980. I like the downtown and all of the bars/restaurants. Really cool. I miss The Burgh! Thinking about moving back. Live in Wisconsin now and it's boring.

Well I have been living here since 2012 and was a full-time Uber driver for over 4 years. There are very bad areas like McKeesport and I've driven through and picked up people in all areas at all times of the day and night. So I can speak to both the good and bad aspects of Pittsburgh. I've seen a lot of improvement and there's a lot more that can be done and is being done. You came through Pittsburgh at the height of the covid pandemic. It was like a ghost town then, few people outside most store and restaurants closed only essential business in operation. All in all Pittsburgh is a great place with a lot to do and jobs for anyone willing to work. Every city and town has their drawbacks.

James, curious as to if your opinion, less on the area, more on the profession in the area, has changed since the murder of the woman driving Uber. I’m just curious if that has changed your habits in any way. Surely you realize it was all a matter of chance, working the job 4 years it just as easily could have been you that day. Or my mother who has since stopped the job, but would drive me nuts needing to wear her jewelry while letting these strangers in her car. Do you attribute that kind of issue to the city & some of its residents themselves or is it a profession hazard in general?

You literally drove past my grandmothers old house and church in McKeesport… TWICE.. (Light green house on the left hand corner @15:45) I hadn’t been there in years, and a rush of emotion and memories just swept over me.. It was pretty run down when I was a kid, but now it is literally a wasteland. It’s sad how badly the old mill towns around Pittsburgh have deteriorated 😔

I have family that live in Pittsburgh, so I'm a bit biased in favor of the area. The mountains are truly beautiful, and it is personally a city that I find extremely scenic. Having been through downtown a few times, it seems like a pretty nice place to be with quite a few things to do. My cousins were raised in the Port Vue area, which is heavily working class. It's a moderately nice place to be. My aunt and uncle made their home there, and my cousins were raised without any issues. Even though my aunt and uncle divorced, my uncle still lives there and likes it. He has a booming electrician's business. My eldest cousin moved to McKeesport after she got married and they bought a fixer-upper home there. Both of them have stable, high-income jobs and moved to McKeesport by choice. They've been renovating their home, built in the early 1900s, from top-to-bottom. They like living there, and when I drove through their neighborhood to visit, I honestly never felt unsafe or threatened. It doesn't even look that bad. Since I've lived relatively close to East Cleveland my entire life, and knowing that place's reputation and the things that go on there, I truly don't think McKeesport is anywhere near as bad as a place like that. I really, really like Pittsburgh. The scenery, the style of the homes, and just the overall "vibe" of the city are great. It's a place I wouldn't mind living. It also has its own little culture (exemplified through things like "Pittsburgh Dad" - hilarious YT channel!)

Mckeesport Hospital was one of the best burn hospitals in the country. With it's proximity to the steel mills, the many burn accidents that occurred at either U.S.STEEL or J&L Steel were treated promptly and with the best care possible. It was, I believe, a teaching hospital for reconstructive surgery and severe wound care.

Yinz guys are getting lucky or something. I have no criminal record or anything like that and i've seen people get mugged and jumped just working at Echostar. My scanner won't shut up about McKeesport, Wilmerding, Pitcairn, Penn Hills, etc. I've lived here 45 years now. Are we Chicago or South Central LA? of course not, But if you think you are completely safe walking through Rankin or Wilkinsburg, especially at night, I'll start praying for you now. I had just drove through back in '16 when those folks in Wilkinsburg got gunned down in their yard. that 14 year olds body found 2 years back and I heard the gunshots from my house when both Rico Smith and Isaiah were shot and killed. All three of those were right down on Airbrake Ave. Someone was just shot and killed at the mall this week in broad daylight. I LOVE our city and am here for life, but you guys are jumping on this guy like he got it all completely wrong, and he really didn't. But I will say he should have maybe threw us a bone about how even when people move away from here, they leave their hearts here and love the burgh forever.

I grew up in Pittsburgh. I haven't lived there for 30 years. I don't see a huge difference in the video. Looks mostly the same. I think the author of the video is used to the more recent "gentrified" cities. Other than some abandoned buildings, I really didn't think it looked that bad.

I wish people would stop talking about how horrible and dangerous places are when they don’t live there. Pittsburgh born and raised. The “South Side “ of Pittsburgh is NOT McKeesport, although McKeesport is south of Pittsburgh as you say. The “South Side,” however, is comprised of neighborhoods such as Carrick, Arlington, Beltzhoover, and Knoxville. McKeesport is related to another area of blight which includes Duquesne, Homestead, West Mifflin, Glassport, and Clairton. These areas experienced blight due to the closing of steel mills beginning back in the 1970s.

Also for every bad area, there's about 4 good ones. Pittsburgh is made up of a TON of little communities, cities within a city. Amazing food, voted top 5 coffee places in nation. Good shopping..lots of mom and pop hidden stores. Artwork scattered all over, if you're looking! Beautiful bridges and tons of gorgeous well thought out green spaces. Best of all the people. Some of the most welcoming I've ever met.

My experience between the two are night and day. The people in Philly by and large were abrasive dicks and the people in Pittsburgh were hypnotically chill. Outside the posh and/or student areas of the east end, Pittsburgh is basically a giant Appalachian small town where nobody's in a rush and nobody is pretentious about anything.

I grew up in a smaller town in NWPA about 90 miles from Pittsburgh. Up until the late 80's the entire region was a great place to live and things were thriving. Then corporations left the area, manufacturing dried up and left behind a closed down, boarded up shadow of its former self. All of these towns look the same in PA. The same style homes, the banked yards, hilly streets and the 9 months of perpetual grey weather. The welfare system has enticed those from larger cities to move to these small towns as there are no jobs so public assistance is readily available. Drugs and crime are out of control. There is little money in city coffers for removal of blight, control of crime or regular infrastructure improvement. On the positive side, native Pennsylvanians are some of the most endearing, caring and generous people in this country. Many may have little but they will offer it without hesitation to someone else in need.

Statistically no one is moving to these smaller towns. People are leaving, including being evicted or having their houses condemned. There are a handful of people who've bought homes at extremely low prices or gotten them for free in "adopt a home" programs who've moved to these areas but they are few and far between. I don't think you understand how welfare works, you are required to work a certain number of hours or attend a job training program in Allegheny County. There is literally no benefit to living in one of these areas in terms of government benefits, its actually a lot harder to navigate the crappy bus system and get to a job training center if you live outside Pittsburgh, some of the CCAC campuses are very hard to get to by bus too if you try to use that option instead of going a job or job training center. I also don't agree that drug use "runs rampant". I've never seen a drug dealer in Pittsburgh. I'm not saying they don't exist but there are areas in other cities, even small ones like Harrisburg where they are pretty easy to spot if you drive around certain areas. I also never saw people strung out. I've heard of other people seeing folks strung out especially in McKeesport and Homestead, but I never saw that in many low income dilapidated areas I would commute through everyday. Even when I've spoken to homeless people in Pittsburgh they seem to have it together mentally for the most part, sadly some of them are physically disabled, a lot of them are elderly. They're not the drug zombies you see in Philadelphia for example. A lot of people are on social security or disability in these areas (probably the only place they can afford to live) for example there is a huge deaf population in North Braddock.

This video is wayy wayy misleading. 1)mckeesport is not part of the city. You drove about 20-25 mins outside of the city to get there. 2)the whole east side is not filled with areas like this, white oak, north versailles, monroeville, forest hills, churchill are some examples of nice neighborhoods. 3)homewood, lairmer, wilkinsburg would be areas of pittsburgh that are tough neighborhoods like mckeesport but are actually part of the city. 4) you decided to pick and choose what streets to go thru, you left out the really nice parts of mckeesport. 5) you failed to explain what happened in history to bring this area like this, such as the loss of the steel industry. Very very misleading video.

I was born in McKeesport in 1953. My family dates back to 1892 in this area. My family moved to the Midwest in the 60’s and we went back to visited family for the next 30 years. It was a slow decline but a visible decline during that time. I last visited McKeesport in 1997. Heart wrenching to see my hometown look so deplorable.

Emotionally it’s hard to see a place that holds so many good memories in such terrible shape. I have hundreds of pictures showing family picnics, playing in parks and swimming. You drove by an Orthodox Church where I have pictures of weddings and family dressed for the occasion, it’s now all boarded up. I understand the exodus because of the lost of Industies. That’s why my family moved. I have seen other KZbin videos about McKeesport and not surprised by viewing your video. The answer to your question is “Yes, it’s a goner during my lifetime .” Can there be a renaissance for McKeesport in the future? I would like to think so. I've lived in Millvale, West Mifflin, and Greenfield. Worked at Univ of Pitt in Oakland. Worked in Lawrenceville at Children's hospital. Had season tickets to Kennywood and Sandcastle for me and my son one year. I'll always love this city. Yes there's some bad parts but the overall feel down there is amazing especially in the summertime. I recommend biking the river trails or you can kayak them now too! Amazing views!!

Visit the oldest parts of any city and you'll have the impression that it's unsightly. My father's father came to America from Wales at the age of nine and worked in the steel mills and walked the streets of South Side. Back then, the streets hadn't been widened yet there were less cars, and the appearance was much different. At that time it was called the "smokey city" and women had to be careful of when to hang laundry outside, but that's all changed. What you don't know is what these homes look like on the inside. It's long been known that assessments are made by government inspectors passing on the outside. Inside, they are castles.

I lived in McKeesport all my life. Yes. You toured the same 4 streets over and over that are in the worst condition. The Sheriff and rolling police cars don't help my case either. But..You stopped short of seeing the brand new housing on 2 of the roads. And I see the focus on shack's and not on nice properties right across the street. You should of seen us before we demolished all the really bad structures. All those vacant lots are opportunities awaiting development. And we have 2 US Olympic athletes to honor from McKeesport. We got to be doing something right. We're not the prettiest.. but we do what we can with what we have. Thanks for visiting.. we really do appreciate the visit.

I'm from West Mifflin, Pa....just three miles from McKeesport. As a kid, I remember getting on a bus every Saturday....I would spend my entire day in McKeesport going to the movies, visiting the Army and Navy store and walking into endless shops. After the steel mills closed, the entire area was devastated. It's a shame...it was once a fantastic place.

These places make me so sad, knowing that there was once a vibrant community where now there's such ruin. It's this way for so much of SW PA, especially in the area that I grew up: Monongahela, Donora, Charleroi, Clairton, Altoona, Aliquippa. As someone who was born and raised here, I have to say I cannot wait to get out. I dont want to offend anyone, but it has become too liberal for my blood. Im going rural. I love and hate Pittsburgh in equal measures and I will always call it home, but I have outgrown it. Time for peace and quiet. That all being said, there really are only a handful of truly BAD neighborhoods in Pittsburgh. It is a very livable city and a lot safer than most other major cities in the US.

@@LordBransty .....like Terry I've watched Mckeesport decline over several decades. I cannot comprehend how a city can be so decimated, especially its downtown. One of the streets that Nick drove up and down is called Locust Street. When I was a girl, there were no vacant lots, just houses filled with families and our friends. They would walk down the 14th Street stairs to reach our church on Walnut Street. Now that entire block is gone and looks like a very large yard. 😥 Living out of state, I miss my hometown and its annual International Village that showcases the city's diverse population.

I appreciate the visit. I am a Native and work downtown for many years. My recommendation; Pork n Beans is NOT a Pittsburgh staple. It’s a good Happy Hour place and that’s about it. Sienna Mercado is a good place for food on Penn, but Mike n Tony for a Gyro or Primanti for a sandwich would be a better review for a Pittsburgh oriented meal.

Honestly, with some renovation and rebuilding, this place looks really cool. Just moved to upstate NY from Shiga, Japan; and I'm oddly nostalgic to see suburbs right on the side of a wooded mountain. Back in Japan there are lots of abandoned houses just like this out in the woods; albeit, not this clustered together. It's all worn to hell, but there's potential here. Nothing like the barren hellscape I expect when people talk "rundown city". Supposing security was handled, I'd love to get one of those houses right on the edge of the hill and fix it up.

You don't have to worry about security. The reason why the bartender said McKeesport is bad is because the crime rate is much higher than other small towns in the Pittsburgh area and Pittsburgh itself, its known for a lot of drug addiction and other problems. There are areas like this where that is far less of a problem.

I'm from South Side and I never remember hearing that McKeesport was a bad area.. I know that there are much worse places to go (and I have been to them) although I don't remember what the name of the area was. It's great to see videos of my hometown where I grew up. Haven't lived there since the 80s and the South Side riverfront was full of grounded rusty barges that we fished from.

Born and raised in Texas but moved to Pittsburgh a decade ago and never thought I'd say it but I honestly like it way more here than Dallas. Less concrete and more green, especially for being a pretty good size city. There are parks and trails every where so if you like the outdoors Pittsburgh is where it's at. I live in the middle of the city and see deer and wild turkey just about every day from my porch. The folks are also nice here and it's slow moving which both are things you don't expect in a northern city. All in all Pittsburgh exceeded my expectations by far.

yeah.. I was stuck working in Columbus Ohio for about 5 years, everything was flat, brown and gray - ALL the time. Never sold my Pgh house or relinquished PA residency and drove back/forth almost every weekend just to get the hell out of there! Whoever filmed this video should visit Columbus, crime is thru the roof, people are NOT friendly, repeated lousy fast food restaurants appear every other mile, folks drive like idiots, and probably more shootings than in Chicago. When I first arrived someone that I met from Pgh said for past 2 years of living in Columbus they'd smelled nothing but french fries everywhere 🤣

When u came off Shetland & made the left on larimer & made the right down Joseph st. My uncle’s garage was back the little dirt road. I remember as a kid my uncle would say go down the store on the corner of the larimer bridge & get candy..He would always send me whenever his partner would come & one day. I said why does he always send me to the store when he come. Well they was counting piles of cash on my uncles hood of the car. Years later my grandmother told me he was a bookkeeper I was no old that 10 years old.. if you lived out there he was well known as NewNew.. He was the best transmission guy on the east side back in the day. Legend of larimer 💯 I live 5 min from there till this day.

I took my young son to the burgh and we stayed in the Wiliam Pitt Omni hotel downtown. What an incredible piece of architecture that building is!! The rooms tend to the smaller side, but the hotel itself is a masterpiece.

I was born and raised in McKeesport 1955 and moved from there in the mid 80's when the steel mill shut down. It was a beautiful city in my day. When all the old folks died off, the younger generation didn't have a care in the world of ever trying to revive the city. I still have family there and trying to find some old school mates. My new home is now Georgia. Beautiful, lustful, and wide open spaces. Mckeesport memories will remain in my heart, but Georgia is on my mind.

McKeesport is a city to itself and not a part of Pittsburgh. They are both in Allegheny County. McKeesport is called, specifically, the northern Mon Valley, by it's residents. It's apples and oranges to call McKeesport "Pittsburgh." They are a part of the same metropolitan area but one has absolutely nothing to do with the other.

It has improved greatly in the last 15 years, all those grass lots where run down slums or vacant buildings. The city and county have been on a warpath to demolish the blight the last decade.

I mixed and played with many area musicians. Coming out of the east end,, hung out when I wasn't playing Saturday nights at the Varsity House, checking out the Igniters and the Cadillacs. My guess is that we may have played with some of the same musicians. Hope all is well
