I don’t understand why no-one explains or understands that Carnatic music was never excluding anyone but rather it is an exclusive performing art form. Why is it a big deal that it should be available to everyone when it is already? In fact my grandma being a Brahmin herself could not learn music but every day at noon she never failed to listen to the AllIndia Radio broadcasting Carnatic music and she learn to understand ragas etc. I think it is truly an absurd concept that music should be available to everyone when it has been since time immemorial.
@sriBsai2 жыл бұрын
Great observation. But have you thought how your Grandma was able to listen to it in the first place? How did she cultivate that interest? Even though she couldn’t learn music, she had the interest to listen. Where did that come from and how come people of our generation don’t have the patience or interest to CM even though most of the kutcheris are free and there are so many CM concerts online? Film songs get 1 Million views in one day, while CM hardly gets viewed in tens and hundreds. Why is it the case? I think the answer is: the inclusivity is not about who can listen or not, but the inclusivity is about who is given the opportunity to cultivate an interest to listen to this. Film songs do not require any training on the listener’s part. You can just tune in and start listening and feel good. But CM is an art form that requires the listener to cultivate a taste towards it. How are we going to create that? I hope this answers you question on why it should be available to everyone when it’s already available. It’s already available but not many know to enjoy how to appreciate it.
@raghunathansrinivasaraghav64552 жыл бұрын
You are correct. No. One is excluded. But the art form is exclusive demanding 1. Hard and sustained practice 2. Proper diction 3. Understanding the sahitya bhava 4. A lot of patience and preservarance. 5. Working knowledge in multiple languages with correct pronunciation. 6. Basic knowledge of Sanskrit script. ( It will help in mastering sahityaas in Telugu, kannada, Hindi etc. There are lot of vidwans of repute. To mention few Kancheepuram Nainaa Pillai Chittor Subramanya pillai Madurai Soma Sundaram Ramnad C S Sankara Sivan M M Dandapaani Desikar Sundara Murthy Rajananickam Pillai. All the great Nadaswaram Vidwans, starting from Rajarathinam Pillai onwards. Top class percussion vidwans like Pudukkottai Maamundia Pillai, Pazhani Subramanya Pillai, Dakshinaamurti Pillai. Who can forget T Viswanathan Brother of great Balasaraswathi. Veenai Dhanammaal, jayammaal Brindha Mukta sisters. In composing, the great Tanjore quartret. Tamil Trinity Marimutha Pillai, Arunachala Kaviraayar etc. Once I had an interaction with a great vidwan, a musician's musician. He told me that he does not take students just for fun. He said he will ask the student " என்னப்பா கற்றுக் கொள்ள வேண்டும்." If the answer is "பாட்டு கற்றுக் கொள்ளவேண்டும்". I tick the student out. Then I will ask how many swaraas are there. If the answer is 7. That is the end of it. If the student says that he wants to learn " சம்பிரதாய சங்கீதம் மொத்தம் 12 ஸ்வரங்கள் என்றால், then i ask the student to sing for a few minutes. He also said there is no crash course in class. But now we are in " அவசர உலகம்". He said that he will advise the prospective student to attend Bhajans to understand the nuances. Because of these hurdles people find it difficult to take up music and general public think it is elitist art.

@@raghunathansrinivasaraghav6455 Nicely put! Yes, it is not just an art form. It is a way of life. The music practice requires patience, discipline, sensitivity and dedication. It’s everything but அவசரம்! But today we are in the world where we want instant gratification for everything. We, as a society and as each individual, have to recalibrate what is important to us and where we are heading. And to do this, the education system and mindset has to change. We need an education system which is not focused on external material gains, but an education system which can help elevate our souls through இயல், இசை & இலக்கியம். Bharathiyar called our nation- ஞானத்திலே, பர மோனத்திலே, யோகத்திலே, கானத்திலே, கவிதையிலே உயர் நாடு!!.. Is it still true?

Carnatic music, like other forms of classical music, including western classical, is totally different from pop music and by nature, complex and difficult to appreciate. If I want to appreciate it, I should make a sincere attempt and persist with it for some time,even if I don’t understand it initially. The onus is on me. Thousands of Westerners have attempted and succeeded. In a general situation where one rapidly changes the channel, “ என்னவோ மொக்கய போட்டுட்டிருக்கான்”, the moment one hears Carnatic music, the musicians can only cater to those who have a ear for it. A society cannot berate and make fun of an art form and at the same time, blame the artists and their connoisseurs for keeping them out of it.
@sharadakrishna7742 жыл бұрын
Just as everyone cannot be an actor or actress, painter,. Dancer, Sportsperson etc. Only those who are interested can be taught. You cannot force it on anyone. Every parent has to strive hard to push his or her child into a particular art. Best example is actress hemamalini's mother. She spent half her life in giving her daughter good training in dance then gradually entering cinema. Parents' full support should be there. Amrit Raj brothers could shine in tennis only because of their mother Maggie amritraj. she used to take the children early in the morning for practice.First of all as a family parents should push and help their children in the activity which they are interested. No use in blaming one சமுதாயம். If a person is interested and talented nobody can stop them from coming up in life whether carnatic music or any field

Carnatic is a difficult concept to appreciate and become an exponent in. Just like most people have difficulty with jazz or western classical or opera. There is a select audience and select group that performs. It isn’t based on caste at least in the current generation. Even among Brahmins only a a small percentage take to Carnatic. Think of it like blues or blue grass or country. Only people who are brought in that mileu take to it. They musical forms do not have universal appeal. So accept it and don’t keep harping on caste as limiting it. There are enough teachers in Carnatic who are open to accepting students from all backgrounds. But without a keen widespread interest in that genre it is bound to remain in select circles. Just accept it. ™ krishna has many avenues to attack casteism without specifically targeting One community.

Isn't it responsibility of veterans to simplify the complexity of saastriya sangeetham and expand the reach of carnatic music. Chembai swamy had trained shri.K.J.Yesudass cutting across all barriers. We need such courageous singers willing to groom singers from all sects to expand the reach.

Carnatic music, like other forms of classical music, including western classical, is totally different from pop music and by nature, complex and difficult to appreciate. One has to have an inclination towards it to be able to appreciate it.

No it is not. Their responsibility is not any more and not any less than the responsibility of any expert in any field to transmit their knowledge to a suitable recipient. A lot of effort needs to be made by an aspirant to come get the knowledge. KJY met that level and he received the knowledge from appropriate Guru. Same like Physics, chemistry, sciences, engineering, PhDs. No shortcuts. One Develops the passion, come half way and then the guru will show up and take you rest of the way. Don’t fall into the misleading narrative of TMK. The man who makes to 50 RS coconut shell violin and plays it beautifully in the train and sells it to others. For an extra 100 bucks ask him to teach you how to play it like him, he just can’t make it happen overnight. It is a lot of rigor and practice.

The biggest problem concerning inclusivity in Carnatic music directly relates to privileges and biases involved in music teaching and learning. It is an art form that is scientific in nature and this requires some serious contemplation, patience and hard work on the part of a learner as well as a teacher. It is anything but instant gratification of senses. We all learn languages and mathematics in schools, but do all of us end up becoming poets and mathematicians? But, we need an education in math and languages to be literate and numerate to appreciate and make sense of the world around us. Similarly, we all music education to appreciate good music so it can be useful in our lives, make us more sensitive to beauty and help us find ourselves. So, more than anything else, we need to focus on making music education more equitable so we all are given equal opportunity to learn this art form. How we choose to use it- whether we want to be Carnatic listeners or use to understand other genres of music, is our choice. Carnatic music is a language to understand and appreciate music in depth. And we need great teachers to teach and share this language with others. While learning of a language can be made equitable and possible, whether one becomes a poet, an artist or not is only in the hands of God. But at the least, music equity will open the doors to all to appreciate beauty in music. And I believe, this is at the core of TMK’s work, in him trying to help people understand this language of Carnatic music better. I am surprised and shocked that SR’s insights were not in depth, given she is such a senior artist. When the interviewer asked about her thoughts on ARR, I wish she shared some musical insights instead of just saying how he liked her musical bouquet. Come on, we deserve more depth than this SR!

I think you totally misunderstood .. Firstly you need to understand things more in detail before commenting on a Senior Artist Like Smt Sudha Raghunathan.. Go back to Histroy of Carnatic Music ..There were Legendary Singers /Instruments Players Like ( Veena Dhanammal // Kanchipuram Naina Pillai/ Dhanakoti Ammal // Muktha & Brinda / Karikurichi Arunachalam and many more to List ) who are not from the So Called Brahmin Community but were Glittering in the field Carnatic Music ... TMK 's comment was ,As if Someone in the Community had build a Great Wall of China and that C-music is not letting it out is mere Stupidity and Politicizing for some cheap benefits ... Smt Sudha Raghunathan was Point Precise and gave very Fitting Reply Spontaneously .. Kudos to her

@@arkay2838 Thank you for your response and refreshing my memory. I’m well aware of the history. I’m also aware of the fact there was a time when singing and dancing was looked down upon by people belonging to upper castes. Why were there no women singers from the Brahmin community before Smt. D.K.Pattamal who sang publicly? Prior to the 1900s, or before abolishment of the Devadasi system, music and arts was much more spread out among different kinds of communities and as far as I know, Brahmin women didn’t sing publicly. They thought it was a bad thing. So how come suddenly the Carnatic music world is dominated by mostly Brahmin women and men? Have you thought more about this? I’m interested in knowing your response. I’m not a subject matter expert, but I can’t accept things blindly without analyzing just because they are a senior artist. They are also humans and can be fallible. According to me, this interview was neither insightful nor had any depth. You may choose to disagree with me and I respect that. Thank you!

Its a fact that, as a % of the South Indian population (let alone whole of India), only a minuscule number have the interest and ability to appreciate Carnatic music. This is largely due to the rigid nature of Carnatic music and the high level of discipline required (which the majority of us Indians are not known for) to attain a level of proficiency be it as a performer or even as an appreciative listener who understands the nuances of this part of Indian art & culture. It is also a fact that the brahmin community, again as a % within the community, cares much for discipline and has the willingness to do the hard grind with sincerity to learn this form of the art. Given this scenario, it is perceived as though the brahmins are not inclusive and not welcoming of other communities into this form of the art. One question that begs an answer is, what prevents the other communities which collectively form 97% of Tamil Nadu's population to go head on and learn this art and beat the brahmins at it? Why do 97% expect to be "allowed" to participate as equals in this field when they have the numbers and the clout to do it themselves? The 97% can't beat the 3%? This is ridiculous! Its sheer laziness to do the hard grind but with a desire to be at the top and conveniently blame others for their own deficiencies when they don't reach the top. There are exceptions within the 97% but they really are exceptions. This is the truth and truth is bitter unfortunately. Whilst brahmins like T.M. Krishna and the like have the full freedom to share their knowledge and skills in this field to the 97%, the willingness and desire to learn the tough art and reach high levels should be with the 97%.
