Not to discredit him at all but the weird thing with Sumo is that the actual world-class athletes... don't compete in the worlds. In fact, unless I'm mistaken, a lot if not all of the Japanese wrestlers present at those amateur events are teens and young adults from college and university sumo clubs, kids that are looking to turn pro. At the end of the day, I'm pretty sure that if you throw any juryo wrestler into this competion he'd wipe the floor clean.

Sumo is such an incredibly ruthless competition. You don't get a chance to feel out your opponent. You don't get a "best of three" point system. After my first competition I lost on forms placing 3rd of of three, and got second in my fight out of two. Not good. But, instead of feeling defeated, I knew I tried what most wouldn't do at 53 years of age. So, I plan on completing again. Watching you complete inspires me to to forge ahead, even if another lose will happen, I want to show others that failure is only failing, if you don't get back up and try again.

Man, this whole video resonated with me so much. I was so tense watching it. I started kickboxing at 37 and have competed in 3 regional tournaments, so although I've never competed at anything like the high level that you're fighting at, I also went through the 'thrill of victory and the agony of defeat' in my own little way. I'm totally rooting for you and hope you kick ass next year, but also, if you don't - that's ok - Just by stepping into that ring, you've achieved more than most people ever will. Bravery is not winning, it's putting yourself in a position where winning or losing is even an option. Big love!

Congrats on making it there and competing!! I have been watching Sumo for the past 8-10 years, and if I could give you a few pointers: 1) You have got to get way lower at your tachiai and work on your hip mobility and quad tightness. Foot sliding, foot stamps, splits training and teppu. 2) make sure to keep your elbows pinned to your side during foot slides so that your arm pits aren't breached. You are built to be a good mawashi fighter with either a shallow frontal grip or breaching their arm put for a deep inside grip. 3) cross train in judo if you can. Trips and throws are key and judo does an amazing job of teaching that. Many pro sumo and high level amateur sumo wrestlers are seasoned judoka. I wish you the best and it has been great to see you discover the support and dive into it with the dedication and effort that you have! I hope that you get a chance some day to go to Japan and get to practice at a top Heya!

Everyone rightly points out you competed at Worlds after only 2y of training, but I found it inspiring that you started training sumo well into adulthood. So many people think that if you don't start something in childhood (sports, arts, music, etc), then it's already too late. Yet not only did you compete at Worlds (and won a few matches!), you're already planning for next year. Once the sharp sting of losing fades, take time to celebrate yourself for persevering and teaching people to do the same.

Well, that’s the difference: in the U.S. Sumo is still just barely bit more than a “backyard sport”, but in many countries (even this kind of amateur) Sumo is a serious state and/or sponsor founded competition sport. …And even so you collected some “scalps”, and your ladies even 2 medals; so bravo there! …And it is still your very American mentality what makes you say that there is only winning/winners and loosing/ losers; no gray area, though already the very concept of 3 medals contradicts that. And this is basically a very bad mentality, as like that every competition sport is an activity of losers, as following this idea there’s always only one winner, everyone else loses; and even one days winner is next day loser. Being there, enjoying yourself, evolving and learning, spending special time with supporting friends and family, and doing your best should fill you already with joy, not important the results. This is what, - if nothing else - the “one moment” concept of Sumo should teach you. For you, being there was already a win; anything else was already a bonus!
@vksasdgaming94722 ай бұрын
Sumo should be very appealing to stereotypical Americans as it is fast, violent and very clear sport. No BS about scoring points, feigning injuries or anything like that. Short burst of action followed by commercial break. In sumo bout there is winner and loser. Period. In competition it is different. If someone gets silver place in contest that has hundred (just a number) contenders means he won 98 of them.

I'm in my room, yelling and flinching while watching this, and my heart is pounding with every second of each bout. No sports documentary has ever affected me like this. It's how you take us with you on this journey-how you don't tell us what happens next and instead just let us walk alongside you, showing us your thoughts and feelings right there in that moment. Your work is inspiring man. Your Sumo content reminds me how much I love grappling. For the act of grappling, the feeling of loss and victory and what it does to your character. I want to get up, go to the gym, and work harder than ever before, especially on my stand-up. Can't wait for your video on next year's worlds!

Hey man, we didn't get the win in Sumo Seth 3 without the motivation of losing in Sumo Seth 1 and 2. This is just the infinity war to your end game.

Let's go Sensei Seth! You competed with some of the best Sumo wrestlers in the world, their skill acknowledged and rewarded by being able to compete on a global stage. With you and the rest of the USA team among them. A few were handed medals for this tournament. You were handed fuel for that fire inside that's gonna get you on that podium next year!

Yeah, HOW many times did you take 2nd in Sumo tournaments and championships before you won Nationals? This was just your FIRST Worlds, dude. Amazing first showing.

Sometimes it's important to remember that it's not that the destination is important, but the journey it took to get there. I've watched your hard work from the inception of Sumo on your channel. You may not have come out on top right now, but that just means you have further room for growth in a field where your passion is evident. Excited to see the continuation of your journey. I do believe the title of Sensei is well earned. Cheers, Seth.

Before fools start pointing fingers at seths opponents 🙄 (too late): The japanese wrestlers are full time college athletes who have trained sumo since they were little kids. The japanese near the top of university sumo, are generally at the level of the pros. They are essentially pro athletes. IFS sumo is WADA compliant, we athletes are random drug tested, and tested at events.

@@CalebHSumo I only really know of the pro sumo scene. Did guys like Onosato and Takerufuji compete at this amateur level, and compete in these sorts of events? If so, I can see why it seems like there's a vast gulf between them and other countries.

Now definitely try beach wrestling. Kind of like freestyle wrestling on the beach. But you win by throwing your opponent on the sand. Kinda like sumo. Or even try catch wrestling. Especially at snake pit Wigan.

Hey Seth. I've watched a dozen or so of your videos before this one, but this time I subscribed. As a former athlete and coach, I believe in the power of sport to challenge us, reveal our best selves, and uplift us all, competitors and spectators alike. You have a fun and informative channel, and I've appreciated it on that level. Sports SHOULD be fun. But there are those of us who also throw our lives into sport, whose passion for our chosen "arenas" transcends fun and becomes self-defining. At that level, every sport deserves our screams of loss, our tears of joy, our broken hearts, and our thunderous applause. Thank you for sharing this view into your journey. Thank you for having the courage to share your tears. I hope there is joy too. And I hope you hear our applause.
