I worked as a carwash attendant for my first job, hired in Jan 2001 and it got me through college (earned my associate's degree, title "Computer Support Technician") because of tips. Customers appreciate it when they get back in their car and it: 1. smells nice 2. has all found money in the ash tray/cup holder 3. has no dust on the dash causing a glare in the sunlight 4. has all the yellow crud built up from their smoking cleaned off ALL the windows My friend brought his 1992 Thunderbird to the carwash when I was working because we cleaned his 1998 Corolla so well. He entered the thunderbird into a car show competition and it placed 3rd. Take pride in what you do, and treat people how you want them to treat you and you can do what you want without being a criminal. I want to use this space as a THANK YOU to all the customers of the car wash that appreciated the work I did to make their life easier, and tipped well to make my life better so I didn't have to work at a car wash all my life.

As for detailers, I worked with someone that had worked as a detailer before, and he said it was just apparently a common understanding with the customer, that if they left anything in the vehicle that needed cleaning, they could take it. At the time I just kind of took that at face value. But thinking about it now, that probably wasn't what really was going on.
