The reason that sentence in _Lord of the Flies_ is indecipherable is because it's a "garden path sentence", meaning it tricks your brain into misinterpreting a phrase at the beginning, causing the ending to make no sense. The issue is that "smashed into the jungle" sounds like a verb, but it's actually just a description. The sentence is a lot less ambiguous if you add two words (and a comma): "All round him, the long scar *that was* smashed into the jungle was a bath of heat."

Came back here after starting Frankenstein to say that Korey didn't read the actual beginning of it, so it makes sense that so many people in the comments and Merphy didn't get it. He read the beginning of "Chapter 1" which is deceptive and incorrect to count as the beginning as the book actually starts with 'four' letters--the last turning into a mini-diary. The book's first sentence (although there's the opening for a letter: To Mrs. Saville, England. ... St. Petersburgh, Dec. 11 th, 17--.) is "You will rejoice to hear that no disaster has accompanied the commencement of an enterprise which you have regarded with such evil forebodings."

And for anyone wondering what the next two are to fit this challenge (y'know since Merphy got up to three sentences): "I arrived here yesterday; and my first task is to assure my dear sister of my welfare, and increasing confidence in the success of my undertaking.
