As with anything, there's no one size fits all. For my dog, changing her diet causes serious issues, and finding treats I could give her took a while because all the regular things I've given my dogs in the past make her sick. I found a great brand that drastically improved her coat and her overall health and was recommended by a nutritionist.

I'm a vet and I approve of this message. It's funny because not only did I not disagree with a single point, most of your points were exactly what I tell my clients, for example for lesson 30, I tell my clients exactly what you said, that every dog is different but ideally once a day seems preferable in particular for weight loss

If you really are a vet you know once a day is not good, we feed a full morning meal and two small at noon and dinner for stomach acid issues. once a day is not good
@LikeafoxowКүн бұрын
@ Generally speaking your dog will have some reflux if used to having a meal at a certain time. But if you stick with once a day feedings this stomach acid issue will stop.

I was unaware of how a dogs stomach can flip, and TBH it scared me...After feeding my dog raw food w bone in grind I give her a chicken foot after every meal and every 4 days a chicken neck to help clean her teeth...After she is done all she wants to do is go right to being happy and play (zoomie style)..I knew that it wasn't a good idea from a practical standpoint to play after eating because she could throw her food up, but never did I think she could flip her stomach...I'm better now for watching this...Thank you!

I think my rescue has a protein intolerance. He thrives on gravy train dog food and nothing else. It’s been about 10 months of finding something that works for him because even the best kibbles are super bad for him and the homemade food all my dachshunds thrive on was effecting him wrong. But now that I use a higher veggie and grain ratio he is doing amazing on raw! He still needs seasonal medications but he’s now able to eat fresh foods like the rest of my dogs. I haven’t seen the benefits come through yet but I’m excited. My dachshunds have never been better. I still struggle with teeth health but I’m working on it. I just feel safer to manually brush their teeth rather then let them have bones that are not ground. I’ve always given big dogs bones but for my little ones I’m still nervous. I do give wing tips and chicken feet every now and then

Dogs and humans share some similar digestive processes, but there are significant differences that are important to understand. First, digestion time varies greatly between the two species. Dogs digest food much more quickly, typically within 4 to 12 hours, whereas humans can take anywhere from 24 to 72 hours. If you were to eat only once a day, you would likely feel hungry, nauseated, and experience an upset stomach due to acid build-up. Dogs, on the other hand, are built for faster digestion. It’s crucial to remember that dogs have been domesticated, and their digestive systems have evolved over time. Therefore, it’s not accurate to compare their digestion directly with that of wild dogs or wolves. The food they consume today also plays a significant role in their digestion. I firmly believe that feeding puppies and adult dogs only once a day is not ideal. Also, dogs are far more active - which they need food to sustain their engery. Just think about it-would you choose to eat just once a day? It’s clear that dogs need more frequent meals to maintain their health and well-being.
@thebkpets26 күн бұрын
Many humans do eat once per day but just like you said, we are two totally different species. Also, it’s not “clear” that we need to be feeding dogs multiple times per day for health. Any sources backing this up?

I really find your content very enlightening! It’s been pretty helpful. I do have a question though. I have a great Dane puppy that I just rescued, we have no idea anything about her. So she’s supposed to get like 6 to 10 cups of food per day. I’d find that pretty difficult for me to fit all that into her slow feeder. So I split and make the larger meal in the morning and I give her a smaller meal in the evening cause she’s gonna be going to bed. So I didn’t know how I would make her eat all that food in one sitting? And I am using the same dog food all the time, but I’m changing up what I put in it sometimes I steam butternut squash, pumpkin, or baked sweet potatoes and then I ate shredded zucchini, carrots, green beans, peas, and then I’m doing shredded apples blueberries mixed into cottage cheese, and I give that as just a middle of the day little treat to get some fresh fruit in them. And then I do salmon and I was gonna do mackerel, but I’m hearing about sardines and I thought those might be really high in sodium? Anyway, a lot to know about taking care of dogs that’s for sure.
@billymann532511 күн бұрын
Look at the package contents for sodium content ( which most canned ones contain that ) and rinse them before feeding. That will reduce the sodium intake but not eliminate it.

What about salmon oil caps?
@billymann532511 күн бұрын
Salmon is at the bottom of the list for Omega 3 for me...Try sardines, anchovies, & mackerel before salmon oil. I give a mix up of sardines & mackerel from day to day and add a small amount of kelp powder every feeding to boost the Omega 3 intake...Just heard too many not so good thing about salmon all together. But I'm sure you will be ok if no other options are available.

@billymann532511 күн бұрын
Buy a dog scale and monitor it's ideal body weight. It's obvious how to calculate what you want to achieve in your dogs weight maintain, loss, or gain from day to day. 2% to 3% is what you want to feed your dog a day per it's body weight. Doesn't matter if you decide to do it in 1 or 2 feedings per day. I feed my dog twice a day, once at 6:30am and once at 6:30pm, but I only feed after I have exercised & played with my dog, never right before. That's just a example of schedule feeding.

I'm currently feeding both raw and kibble at this time due to costs. Do you recommend feeding 50/50 per meal, raw in the morning and kibble at night, or kibble in the morning and raw at night?
@debclair82229 күн бұрын
I’m not an expert, but I feed my dogs kibble in the morning and gently cooked at night. I also feed their kibble in enrichment toys like balls, sliders and snuffle balls. They’re chi, chi-mix vacuum eaters so the toys slow them down.
@sarahwheeler522 күн бұрын
Thank you so much for saying that there’s no one right diet, feed the dog infront of you. My dogs do horrible on high end diets, but do great on certain diets that some might judge me on, but you have to feed the dog not the marketing. I add fresh foods to their kibble but I have to keep kibble as a base or my dogs get stomach issues. Can you please start looking at how important minerals are in the foods being fed. I never hear you speaking regarding actual nutrition. Just because I fill my dogs bowl with kale, doesn’t mean they will absorb it properly. This goes to any food and any kibble or raw etc. many of the diets I’ve seen recommend have outrageous mineral content, and things such as extremely low vit e. I don’t think many understand the importance of minerals….

Dogs are CARNIVORES, I fed my dogs dry food for decades. Guess what? They NEVER screamed for it! Since I switched my dogs to raw meats, THEY SCREAM with excitement when I go to the kitchen to prepare their dinners!! That's all the endorsement I need. But there's more, of course. Things I don't have time to get into. Have you noticed how busy your local vet is these days? How dogs and cats are contracting HUMAN degenerative diseases? They are DYING YOUNGER. And they're SICKER as they are doing it!! I have too much to say and even saying this much is pushing my buttons in a harsh way.
@AutumnMoonlight9525 күн бұрын
No, dogs are omnivores. Eating nothing but meat is not healthy for them. Dogs live much longer now then before kibble was created and improved. There are junk pet foods but most are not terrible. And feeding grocery store meat is likely to have bad bacteria in it that are unsafe to feed uncooked. And eggs should be cooked before giving them to pets because the egg whites will cancel out the benefits of the yolk. But cooked they are good for them.
